Re: GILINSKY in Lithuania #lithuania

Barbara Levy

The Gilinskys that I'm looking for lived in what is now Lithunia. Their children all came to the US. The parents, who lived all their lives in what is now Lithuania died quite young. The mother, Blume Gittel Nillis Gilinsky (known as Gertie) died in her 30s, possible in childbirth. The father, Refuel, died in his 40s. Their oldest child, Chaya Riva, took care of the others. She was married to a man named Harry Grimm. The other children were Sora Feigel (who died in childbirth), Shayla, Fruma Devasha, and Yudis. Fruma Devasha was my grandmother, and although I don't how she came to the US, I do know that she was married in 1907 in Nashua, NH. Does anyone have any information on these people???

Does anyone know where I can buy Raymond Engelbreit's book "Les registres de l'etat civil restituent l'histoire des families de Forbach de 1789 a 1870"?  Also, does anyone have a copy who would be willing to check a couple of things for me?

Would it be possible to create a database which captures these facts
? It would be such an advantage to be able to contact individuals
based on the names they seek.

I do use the JGFF, but I agree with the idea of cleaning it up.  So many of the researchers have not been on in the last 10 years.  I do know that they do add RD for the deceased researchers, when someone reports that fact.  But many of the older researchers may no longer be able to use email- or are not actively researching.  Perhaps a better project would be to have the emails sent to those who have not been on since before this date in 2010- and ask them if they are still interested in having their names and contact information on the JGFF.  Then each year after the first, there would only be a single year to check on.  Now that said - I have been teaching a beginning Jewish genealogy class - and two Sundays ago - showed my class how to use the JGFF.  One student has already reported that he had been in contact with a woman in England, who had not been on Jewishgen since 2018 - and he "hit the jackpot".  He knew he had family in England.  She did not know that she had family in the US, and they have already figured out their relationship.

It used to be that family names in capitalization were a required part
of our signatures. That requirement should still be in place so other
Jewish genners can discover new relatives. Recently when looking through
the JGFamily Finder data base it seemed very antiquated to me, People
who last were on JGFF were years ago and how many are still active,
alive or interested.

For all the new and current people using Jewishgen.org, your family
names will give you a better connection to all the people currently
active. For myself I make my own file of those who could be possible
relatives and contact them when I think their may be a family connection.

Mash, thank you very much for your reply. I agree with you regarding privacy issues and newspapers.com notices. So far, the most informative reply, though not the one I wanted to see, came from Debra Hirsh, via Tracing The Tribe group on facebook: [answering your question,] "as someone who got into the hotel industry WAY after that. I'm going to say, probably not. I was in the industry for 30 years and we kept things 7 years as a rule."

Since my original post, A30 Canadian Immigrations cards for the man and his wife were discovered. I now know the couple’s names, so the more realistic next step seems to look for burials of any ‘Lester’-looking names in Toronto, in the hope that there will be a Hebrew part of a tombstone reading Naftoli b. Ber, or Nechame b. Moshe.

I think it does. If you search by a particular surname, it lists surname, town, researcher.

Not only do you see the last name you are looking for, but you get the member name or number and a link to contact them with.

No matter what the subject is, as soon as I am done reading a post to the group, if someone has a signature with the families and locations they are looking for, I read through and see if there is a chance we can be related …to me, the  key is being polite and respectful…  I always apologize to the poster telling them I am sorry I can’t answer their initial post but would be willing to explore any possible family connections based on their signature if they would like to…

Hello. I'm seeking information about a SLIWKIEWICZ or SLIVKEVICH family, originally from Warta (or Varta; in Yiddish, Dvort), Poland. The father and sons were Jewish headstone makers and operated a family business in Warta before the war (I don't have a name for the father). I am particularly interested in the son, Meir (spelling?), who died during the Warta Ghetto era, probably in 1940. An older son was Szmuel or Shmuel.

Thank you.

Re: Require help in understanding items on the attached New York marriage certificate #records

"The bride's given name appears on both pages, the 2nd signed presumably by her. "

The back was not signed by her, as both signatures are by the same hand.  The front was filled out, by him probably, in a very different hand.
He didn't read English well, and put an address where it asks for number of marriage.

This isn't rocket science, you could figure it out.

Re: What would be a full set of naturalization records in NYC from the 1850's? #records

Barbara Ellman

Early naturalization records have very little information on them.  Basically, what is on the index card is pretty much it.

Not to say that you shouldn't look for the actual papers.  They can be rather humorous.  I had one that went on for 6 pages on what a great guy he was without any genealogical information.

I have never seen a ship's name on any of the documents I've seen.

Good luck
