Online Father's Day program about Portuguese Consul who Saved thousands From Holocaust #events #announcements

Stanley Diamond

Dear friends:

The story of Aristides de Sousa Mendes (1885-1954), mentioned in the timely post today by
Jan Meisels Allen, is very close to my heart.   I was blessed to play a part in the journey of
discovery by Professor Andrée Lotey (Montreal), after she learned of her father's long-hidden
secret, a Jewish man from Łódź finding haven in Portugal and then in Montreal during WWII.

The heartwarming story "Jacob Lotenberg and the Green Suitcase" will be available as a
Father’s Day virtual program on Sunday, June 21st at 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm EDT.
Click here for details.

Note: registration ends Thursday, June 18 at 10 p.m. US Eastern Time.  Instructions for
joining the event will be sent the following day, with a reminder on the morning of the program.

Aristides de Sousa Mendes (1885-1954) was Portugal’s consul in Bordeaux during World War ll. He supplied Jews with visas that permitted them to escape from advancing German forces. His decision to save the Jews’ lives cost him his diplomatic career under Portuguese dictator António de Oliveira Salazar. The foreign ministry in Lisbon began sending cablegrams to Bordeaux, ordering him to desist, amid reports from colleagues that he had "lost his senses".

Many years ago I visited a Jewish heritage museum (name of which I
will leave out) in which the computer for name origins described
KATZOFF as a variant of KATZ which usually stands for KOHEN-TZEDEK .
The printout mentioned my brother's name as one of th "prominent
KATZOFFs in Israel.

The next time I visited my above mentioned brother, I mentioned to him
that I did not know we were Cohanim. As an orthodox Rabbi who was
concerned regarding "yichus" he contacted the museum to correct the
misleading data.

BTW, we spell our hebrew name with a "Kuf" and not a "kaf" (as in
Cohen) which should have tipped off the museum's name dept. But in
the english spelling it could be confusing.

Grodno Gubernia - Family names Mattis/Matesky and Weinberg #belarus

Alex Grossman

Hello - I'm looking for any information available for family names Mattis/Matesky and Weinberg in Grodno Gubernia. My ancestors, Harry Mattis and Bertha Weinberg, came from there to the U.S. in 1893. If anyone has information about those families, it would be greatly appreciated.

While I don't know the names of Harry's parents, Bertha's were Samuel and Clara.

thank you,
regards,

New Holocaust Database Set - Polish Victims of the Gardalegen Massacre #holocaust #germany #poland #JewishGenUpdates

Nolan Altman

JewishGen is pleased to announce that a new data set has been added to Holocaust Database (https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Holocaust/)

In April 1945, just before the end of the war, about 1,000 Jewish men and women, mostly Polish forced laborers, were brought to Gardalegen, Germany, an obscure town in central Germany.  The laborers were in transit from various camps, primarily Dora-Mittelbau and Salzwedel, intended to be sent to other camps. When transportation broke down it was decided to murder the prisoners and they were forced into a large barn, which was set on fire. An attempt was made to bury the bodies and hide the massacre but when American troops arrived the extent of this crime was discovered. Most of the dead have never been identified and even the records for the about 200 survivors are incomplete.

Using a variety of sources, Peter Lande from the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, managed to identify about 200 survivors, and a few of the dead where information was found. In many cases there is contradictory information on the spelling of names and he included variants. In the case of women survivors who subsequently married, he included their maiden names. Using other sources of information, it is often possible to determine what happened to these individuals, e.g. emigrated Israel, etc.

The information contained in this database came from holdings at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (www.ushmm.org). The title of the collection is “Jüdische Häftlinge in Gardelegen” (ID:33113) which came from a photocopy from the collections of the City Museum of Gardelegen (Address: Stadtmuseum Gardelegen, Rathausplatz 10, 39638 Gardelegen, Germany).  The transcription was done by Peter Landé.  To learn more about this data set, please see https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/holocaust/GardalegenMassacre.html

You can search these records, along with all of JewishGen’s records from the Unified Search page at https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/all/ Alternatively, to search the Holocaust Database specifically, please start at https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Holocaust/  You will also find a listing of all the component databases below the search grid.  By entering search terms in the grid, you will search all component databases at once.

Re: Recent Record Updates How do you access to the records #general #JewishGenUpdates

yankele

Good morning

I jave looked at the list of the new records added for Ukraine, and more particularly for Nikolaïev, and I have seen that there are the death records for 1876.

I am precisely interested in the death record of my great grandmother, Beyla Jak (her ùmarriage name, unfortunately I do not know her maiden name) in Nikolaïev in 1876.

So is it possible to access to the list of those death acts and to make a search in it ?

Thank you

For a research I am preparing, I am looking for information on Ottoman Jews in European armies ( German, Hungarian, French etc.) or their activities in these countries during WW1. And I am looking for sources on a specific topic:  Ottoman Jews as POW . ( I know there were Ottoman Jewish prisoners held by the British army in Palestine and Gaza)
Any source or information will be welcome.

I believe the town you're looking for is Sokyryany in Bessarabia, which is also where my grandmother's people came from. They emigrated in 1905. JewishGen.com has a lot of information about the town. It was near the larger town of Bricheni. -- Sherry Robinson, Albuquerque, NM

Re: KATZOFF not Cohanim #names

Hi Yoni:
The surname Katzoff is a derivation of the yiddish word katzev which is an occupation: butcher.
Also, this surname is not considered of Cohanite lineage.

Re: FINKEL / FINKLE family in Philadelphia #usa

Thank you, Dani,

One of the 1930's naturalization documents stated Romania/Bessarabia as a place of origin.

Since Finkel/variants was a common name, positively identifying a family will always be a tough case. I've seen several census records of a decidedly different Finkel family with almost all the same daughters. Perhaps, they were cousins. This family, headed by Joseph and Sarah (ne Akselrod), had five daughters and one son Morris. In one census, however, the man is listed as Morris (of Joseph's age), his wife as Sarah, followed by the same daughters. Aren't we creative people?
