Having reviewed many of the films >from the 1848 and other 18th and 19th =
century census records I know that they are =E2=80=9Cincomplete=E2=80=9D. = My own family is =E2=80=9Cmissing=E2=80=9D >from records in Ung and = Maramaros megye. The fact that a household is not listed may mean that they were missed = or that that the head was away. Although most of the 1848 Census was = completed in 1848, some of the records were created in 1849. An = individual may be enumerated in more than one location. Each county was = supposed to collect the same data but the format differs >from one place = to another because the government did not provide forms. In some cases = the recorder created his own hand-drawn form. Because the census was = conducted over a period of more than one year, it is also very possible = that there are additional pages that were created at a different time = and have not yet been located. Vivian Kahn, Oakland, California A posting on Oct. 1 contained images of Jewish census >from =hernadczentandras. I did not see my g'g'grandfather listed, though we = believe he was born there in 1847, Samuel Goldman, son of Moshe Goldman. = Siblings Was this an incomplete census of Jewish families? Any other ideas why =his family would not have been listed? Diane JacobsJewisghgen, but are available through the Hungarian National Archives = and the Archives in Kosice, Slovakia. I would like to share copies of = images of the records >from this Census for the village of = Hernadszentandras (Szent Andras) in this county for those who are = interested. Surnames of Jews living in the village at the time were: = Cisserman, Fischer, Frumer, Gotfried, Hips, Josef, Los, Medve, = Rozenberg, Samuel, Stern, Swarcz, Vasserman, and Veis. =20 =20existence of microfilms of the 1848 Census for Abauj-Torna County in the = Hungarian National Archives through an email to the Hungary SIG sometime = ago, and thanks to professional genealogist Andras Koltai who not only = located the specific records in the microfilms in the Hungarian Archives = but also went the extra mile by obtaining copies of a missing page >from = the Kosice Archives which he determined had the originals. =20=20

Thanks for census help
#general
Wendy Griswold
Belatedly, but overwhelmed by the amount of kindness and free advice.
I had asked for help finding 69 Willett St. in Manhattan on the 1905 census (because I had my party's address confirmed for 1906). Yehudah ben Shlomo, Allan Jordan, and a wonderful lady I know only as Bette were just tremendous. It took some real detective work, but they found the address (my party wasn't there). Yehudah found my family at a different address, and that was the key I needed to start tracing the family of my grandmother's long-lost brother. Amazing amount of knowledge and generosity of spirit. Lots of work yet to be done and I'm going to need lots of help :-( I wanted you all to know how wonderful these folks are and how much this means to me. Thank you!!! Wendy Griswold Pittsfield MA MODERATOR: One way we can all thank JewishGen and the JewishGen community - and insure its continuity - is to make a donation to JewishGen-erosity. Donations can be made in honor of a special person, in memory of someone, to commemorate an event, or just because! No amount is too small. Visit http://www.jewishgen.org/ and click on "Donate" in the green bar at the top.

(U.S.) Two additional resources for genealogists

Hello
Tried 4 times to put this in plain text - hope it works this time - Found this link (subject line) for old newspaper articles >from 1860 -2013 related to our ancestors in Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin, and a few in Virginia and other states - Articles mostly originated >from Duluth newspapers. It offers more than 5000 news articles in original format that involved a Jewish name, births - weddings - obits - fancy parties - lawsuits etc. This may help others http://www.garon.us/newsindex.html (old newspaper articles) to search for name - hit control and F and then type in name (usually upper right hand corner) For example, I found 26 articles on the BUBLEY name. For those that may have roots in Chicago, I found the Chicago Jewish Community Blue Book listing names, offices they held - charities they were involved in - may help others in their research listing all their officers etc. https://archive.org/stream/chicagojewishcom00sent/chicagojewishcom00sent_djvu.txt [or http://tinyurl.com/qyzs5cf - MODERATOR] It states Full Text of The Chicago Jewish Community Blue Book Sue Siegal Surnames - BLONDER - Austria/Poland/Hungary. RAND - Austria/Poland. LINKER - Lithuania/Ukraine. BLUMENTHAL - Lithuania/Ukraine. SHULMAN/SCHULMAN - Lith/Ukraine. SEGAL/SIEGAL/SIEGEL - Latvia. DIAMOND - Latvia. FIERER - Lith/Ukraine

Issue 123 of Genealo-J has just been published
#france
Georges Graner
Genealo-J, publication of the Jewish Genealogical Society of France,
Issue 123, Fall 2015 has just been published In a paper on Jacob Lasry born in Rabat (Morocco) in 1795 and deceased in Oran (Algeria) in 1869, Pascal Faustini explains the migration of his family >from Spain, Morocco (Tetuan and Rabat) to Gilbraltar and Oran. He was able to built the family trees of the Lasry, Bergel, Cabessa and Pacificio families. Elissa Rhais is the pseudonym of Rosine Baumendil, born on December 18th 1876 in Blida (Algeria) where she died on August 24, 1940. Joseph Boumendil describes her life. Her destiny was exceptional for a woman who came >from a very modest family. She became famous for her books which she published in France but she fell into oblivion. Her works were quite noteworthy yet she suffered intrigues during her life and even 40 years after her death. The author deals with her forebears and the somewhat complex links between her real life and the characters of her thirteen novels which can cast some light upon obscure aspects of her biography. Our research enables us for the first time better to know some of her relations. Roland Smolar knew nothing whatever about his paternal grandparents Meyer and Rachel. When his father Robert died the papers he kept taught him that Meyer and Rachel were born in Sakiai and Wladislawow in Lithuania respectively. A postcard dating >from 1945 (with its translation) indicated that a part of Rachel's family remained in Lithuania and was exterminated during the "Holocaust by bullets". The author and Bernard Tsirkmann, a great-nephew of Rachel, decided to go in search of the places where their grandparents had lived their childhood. They relate here the journey done in July 2014. Bernard drove them >from Vilnius, where they met the curators of the archives, to Wladislawow (now called Kudirkos-Naumiestis), to Sakiai and Kaunas which was the capital city of Lithuania during the first period of independence between the two World Wars. Through a research in Wladislawow they found the place where Rachel spent her childhood and met Isaac Glikas, the only Jewish survivor. Other meetings at Kudirkos-Naumiestis and Kaunas are described here. In Sakiai however where the Jews were a majority before the war they found almost no trace of any Jewish life. The last paper of this issue deals with Tunisian Jews. It is well known that for many centuries two distinct Jewish communities coexisted in the city of Tunis : the Twansa, who were genuine Tunisians and the Grana, who were Italians, >from Portuguese and Spanish origin. After the publication of three matrimonial registries of the Grana community in Tunis by Robert Attal and Joseph Avivi, Gille Boulu and Alain Nedjar make us known the discovery of two additional registers containing marriage contracts of this community. Added to the previous records these volumes number 3 (1812-1844) and 6 (1872-1881) including respectively 429 and 234 different ketuboth now allow access to an exceptional corpus of files going continuously >from 1788 to 1881. Boulu and Nedjar present the contents of the two registers, collect statistics on this community and give some examples of genealogy now made possible in combination with other sources. A book sold on a subscription basis is being published by the same authors and our Genealogical Society in October 2015.
