Shanghai Jewish Newspapers During WW ll Online; Shanghai Jewish Refugee Museum Database

Shanghai Jewish Newspapers
About 30,000 Jews fleeing Europe during WWll found their way to Shanghai China due to their "loose" visa requirements. Thanks to both the Leo Baeck Institute and the Internet Archive, four newspapers are in the collection-most of the writing is in German, some in English. The four newspapers are: Shanghai Jewish Chronicle 1939-1945 https://archive.org/details/shanghaijewishch01unse S. Z. am Mittag der Shanghai Post. 1939-1940 https://archive.org/details/szammittagdersha00ead Acht Uhr Abendblatt 1939-1941 https://archive.org/details/achtuhrabendblat00ead Shanghaier Morgenpost 1941- https://archive.org/details/shanghaiermorgen00ead Shanghai Jewish Refugee Museum About 20,000 of these refugee Jews lived in the Shanghai area known as in Tilanqiao, the "Designated Area for Stateless Refugees". The area is still preserved. The Shanghai Jewish Refugee Museum is located at the former site of Ohel Moshe Synagogue and two exhibition halls. It is an important component of the "Tilanqiao Historic Area" and serves to commemorate the phase of history when the Jewish refugees lived in Shanghai. The Shanghai Jewish Refugee Museum has a database with name, occupation and address information for many of the refugees. To search the database see: http://www.shanghaijews.org.cn/english/article/?sid=34 The database is sponsored by the Consulate General of Israel in Shanghai and built with the donations >from Israeli enterprises To learn more about the museum see: http://www.shanghaijews.org.cn/english/ Thank you to The Ancestor Hunt for informing us about these two interesting parts of Jewish history during WWll. Finding Brooklyn, NY Deeds for Leib COOPERMAN
#general
The Becker's Email
Dear Genners,
I have found three references to conveyances and mortgages for Leib COOPERMAN for the period 1906-1911 in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper. He and his family are listed on the 1910 census in Brooklyn at 659 Ashford as owning their home w/ a mortgage. On the 1915 NY census they are at the same address. Leib died in 1919 and his widow Bessie along w/ Max, Kate and Edith COOPERMAN are living at a different address (574 Essex, Brooklyn) on the 1920 census. Where can I find a listing of all Lieb's land transactions, particularly what happened to cause the family to move by 1920? Although familysearch.org has NY Land Records online supposedly for 1630-1975, conveyances essentially end with the year 1886 and pickup again w/ 1975. The grantor/grantee online indexes don't have the volumes for "C" for the period either. The online mortgage records only cover 1927-1945. I could not find land records in the familysearch.org catalog for microfilm for the appropriate period either. I have also tried browsing familysearch.org index for probate records for NY in the hopes of finding something but no luck finding Leib. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Goethe University Inaugurates First Holocaust Professorship in Germany
#germany
Jan Meisels Allen
Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany will establish the first
professorship in Germany for Holocaust research beginning in 2017. The Frtiz Bauer Institut which documents and studies Holocaust atrocities will collaborate. The professorship will examine both the history and the consequences of the genocide. While this is the first professorship in Germany devoted to the Holocaust, these two institutions and others in Germany already research the Holocaust. Funding is >from the state of Hesse. It will fund the professorship with 150,000 Euros per year and the University is now searching for someone to fill the position. Searching HERDAN USA
#general
Stephanie Berrys <sjbovu@...>
To all the searching experts out there....
Thanks to the new Social Security Application index on Ancestry I have found info on a number of family members, for which I have been searching for several years. So far this morning only had time to delve into one but having trouble finding anything further on her. Evaline DECHTER born St Paul MN May 26, 1895, parents Abraham DECHTER & Goldie GOODMAN. I have her birth record >from MN, census records for her through 1930 in St Paul and address book listings through the mid 30s, also in St. Paul. The last city directory listing I see for her is 1938 in the Los Angeles area, which makes sense to me as a number of her (I believe) cousins ended up there in that time frame. After that the trail had gone cold for me, couldn't find marriage or death info. On the new index I have found her under Evaline M. HERDAN, death November 1998. Last known address in California. Apparently her SSN was issued in New Mexico which I find somewhat odd. And now the trail has gone cold again. I presume she married ( late in life, in her 40s or 50s?) hence the name change. But I can't find any marriage info in California, nor can I find any record of her death save the SSN info. I have been looking through Ancestry this morning and a little searching on Family Search and Google. I was hoping to find descendents but I think that's unlikely. Trying to trace the relationship between her father and my great-great grandparents....same last name, travelled Hamburg to Scotland and Scotland to North America together and settled, at some points as neighbours, in St. Paul. Thanks Stephanie Berrys Richmond Hill, ON Canada

Brezhnitz - Town in Ukraine
#general
Yonatan Ben-Ari
According to our family tree, one of our ancestors was a Rabbi Yosef
who , supposedly, was the Rav of a town named Brezhnitz. This Rav Yosef married the daughter of Rav Arieh Leib ben (son of) Shmuel who were the Rabbis of Kremenetz during the 18th cent. These Rabbis were descendants of R' Naftali KATZ , who authored the "Smichat Chachamim". I am trying to identify the town Brezhnitz as there many towns with similiar sounding names and hope that the details regarding the above Rabbi will help someone identify this place. I presume that the Brezhnitz I am looking for is not Breznitz, in Czech. Thank you Yoni Ben-Ari, Jerusalem
