Jewish Genealogy Society of Colorado presents: Culture and Jewish Identity in Freud's Vienna #events #jgs-iajgs

Ellen Beller

Speaker: Dr. Julie Lieber

Culture and Jewish Identity in Freud's Vienna
Tuesday, December 8, 2020

4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Program / Mountain Time
On Zoom • No charge

Turn of the Century Vienna was a place of remarkable cultural and intellectual creativity. Jews such as Freud, Shnitzler, and Schoenberg, to name just a few, were central figures and often the trailblazers in many of the new cultural movements of the time.  How might we understand the disproportionate involvement of Jews in the cultural avant-garde of the turn of the century Vienna? More broadly, we will interrogate the long-standing relationship between Jewish identity and cultural innovation. What can the history of Jewish Vienna tell us about the ways in which Jews of different generations choose to understand and express their Jewish identity?

Dr. Lieber is a Jewish educator with many years of experience in both academic and community-based settings. She currently serves as the Chief Jewish Life and Engagement Officer at JewishColorado. After receiving her Ph.D. in European history with a focus on Jewish women, gender, and sexuality, Julie moved to Colorado, where she was a professor of Jewish Studies for many years. In addition to her work with Kevah, Julie has taught for the Wexner Heritage Program, the Melton program, the Colorado Agency for Jewish Education and is a frequent guest lecturer throughout the Denver Jewish community and beyond. Previously, Julie lived on the East Coast where she was a founding board member of the partnership minyan Darkhei Noam and studied and taught classes at the Drisha Institute for Women.

Ancestry Hit With Litigation Over Yearbooks in California #usa #announcements #records

Jan Meisels Allen

Ancestry includes many U.S. school yearbooks in their database. On December 1, 2020 in California, my home state, a lawsuit was filed in San Francisco – a proposed class action lawsuit, alleging Ancestry amassed photographs, names, likenesses and identities without permission to sell subscription access to the information and advertise Ancestry services and products.

The plaintiffs include California residents who are not Ancestry subscribers, have not donated a yearbook to the company and whose data were uploaded by Ancestry into the yearbook database—“U.S. School Yearbooks, 19090-1999”.  The database has about 730 million individual records including 60 million records from schools and universities in California.

The lawsuit, filed against Inc, Operations Inc and LLC, alleges violations of the California's publicity rights statute and unfair competition law, intrusion upon seclusion and unjust enrichment.

The case is Callahan et al v. Inc. et al, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, No. 3:20-cv-08437

At the time of this posting there is nothing on the Ancestry website regarding the litigation.

"Researchers" submitting Yad Vashem Pages of Testimony #holocaust #israel

J Antrich

Hello all!
Sorry – I don’t see a ‘reply’ button on my daily summary, so can’t reply there.
Re "Researchers" submitting Yad Vashem Pages of Testimony
This is appalling if it’s correct – almost unbelieveable that anyone can contribute information to Yad Vashem without submitting evidence and without moderation. Even if done so in good faith. Just as importantly - What a blow to real researchers and historians, if they can’t trust the Yad Vashem website. And what a gift to Holocaust deniers.

Thanks to all for their help.  From these suggestions and others that were sent privately, I have gotten his papers and learned a lot that I hadn't known before.

With much appreciation for the efforts of the Jewish Gen community,

Many Brooklyn naturalization papers are online at and possibly at  BTW if you are not an Ancestry subscriber, and your local library has a library edition subscription, you can access it at home via your library card through the end of March.

Research In Luxemburg #holocaust

My great aunt Keila Bespaloff and her husband Aron Margolin had been living in Luxemburg since 1927. They were sent to Theresienstadt in sept 42 and were murdered in Treblinka in October as stated in the Yad Vashem database. Their daughter luba died earlier in the 5 fountains ghetto in march of 42. How does one do to search the archives in Luxemburg and obtain information about them and their fate beyond what is listed at either YADVASHEM or Theresienstadt

Gary Pokrassa

Mark - these records are indeed available on Family Search, just not indexed and under records.   If you search in catalog, then under place type in "United States" and hit enter, scroll down to the 4th page where you will find:  United States - Naturalization and citizenship ( 73 )       -- you will find:

Author: United States. District Court (New York : Eastern District); United States. National Archives and Records Administration. Northeast Region

hit enter and armed with your petition number from the index you will be able to locate your record using trial and error looking at the petition numbers

This is also available for US Southern District Court records

Miriam is correct.  If you send the names of the people, I am sure one of us could provide you the Hebrew spelling or even look it up for you.

I've received copies of Naturalization papers by directly contacting the court that issued the numbers. Cook County, Chicago, IL had an online form and the papers arrived in 2 weeks. Staten Island, NY, took several months and multiple phone calls.

David Choukroun

Dear Michael,

the right reference box to ask is 19940457/18

It can be deducted from one or 2 pages earlier where you have the separation line

This corresponds to a "box" that can be delivered @ Archives Nationales de France (that is closed those days anyway -- due to Covid 19)

From those files, it can be : a simple page (with the name and a date of entry/exit), or much more ...

Re: Brooklyn Roumanian-American Congregation First Beth Tphilah (224-228 Hopkins St. Brooklyn) #usa

My great-grandmother's brother Chaim Goldberg was prominent in the early decades of the 20th century in a shul on Floyd Street--which I can't seem to locate. If anybody has, I would appreciate knowing about it.  It could well have been the Brooklyn Roumanian-American Congregation you mention at an earlier address--though he was Russian, not Romanian. A cousin some years back sent me this Brooklyn shul directory. See attached.  The first page shows a receipt in Yiddish re another family member by marriage for this synagogue.  What follows a published directory of shuls in Brooklyn over various years, with the last page mentioning the Roumanian-American Congregation.  This document might help family researchers in general if they are not familiar with it since it includes dates and presiding rabbis.

I think Stepan is the possible birthplace, now in Ukraine. The person's name in question was only in the heading but not the body of the post so it wasn't very clear.
If I misunderstood the original question please clarify it for us.

survivors from Venusberg concentration camp who returned to Budapest #holocaust #hungary

I am still trying to find out what happened to Malvin Weisz/Weiss born Malvina Paneth in 1913 in Onod. It looks like she may have been in a DP camp in Homberg in 1946. She was in  Venusberg from January 1945 then to Mauthausen in April. Many of the women died on the way there. A lot of the Hungarian women who were sent to Venusberg (from Ravensbruck) were from Budapest, so maybe any survivors kept in touch and I could find out what happened to Malvin that way (she was married to my 2nd cousin Jeno Weisz who died in Ebensee in April 1945). So if anyone knows of anyone who survived from Venusberg, maybe I could get in touch with their family. Many thanks.
