Maybe it's not a voter list.  Maybe ancestry misidentified it.  I don't know.  Just guessing.

MyHeritage Offering Free Access to All US Census Records on MyHeritage #events #announcements

Jan Meisels Allen

Marking the decennial US census, MyHeritage is offering free access to searching and viewing all their U.S. Census collection March 29th until April 5th, 2020. They did not place a time zone cut off time so I would guestimate Central time.

To access the records go to:

https://www.myheritage.com/research/category-1100/us-census

Fill out the name, birth residence information and search. Be aware that due to those who keyed in the names into the database not being familiar with some of the names there will be misspellings. Once you find the record you want there is  a transcribed record of the information. Scroll down to the image of the census.  If you click on the orange “save record” above the image it takes you to save it on MyHeritage.  However, if you prefer to save it to your own computer, right click on your mouse and then when the list of options appears you can click save image as to your computer and save it to the file you prefer.

To read more see:

https://blog.myheritage.com/2020/03/free-access-to-all-u-s-census-records-on-myheritage/

Remember to fill out your census form on line by April 1st!  Go to https://my2020census.gov/  and use the  key code you received in the mail.

I have no affiliation with MyHeritage and am posting this solely for the information of the reader.

Researching family in Saint Petersburg, Russia #russia

Herbert Lazerow

<Jews were not allowed to live in these cities (St Petersburg) in the 19th century. If the did it wss because they worked for a wealthy or politically or military family. >
Generally, Jews were not permitted to live in the Russian Empire outside the Pale of Settlement unless they were classified as retired military, merchants, or residents of an agricultural colony.  That was the law, but there is always a gap between the letter of the law and what happens on the ground.  I have read that there was little enforcement of this law before 1880, and enforcement was stepped up between then and the revolution. No idea how effective enforcement might have been. The fact is that the larger the city, the greater the range of economic opportunities it offered, so there was economic incentive to ignore the law and, if caught, to try to persuade the official that you were an exception.

I believe if you use the clippings verbatim and cite the publication, city, date and page you can use the clipping.

You may also want to acquire the book, "The Moses of Rovno" about a German who rescued Jews in that town, Fritz Graebe. His son owned an apartment that I lived in, and Mr. Graebe was honored by being named a Righteous Gentile. He was the only German to testify against Germany in the Nuremberg trials. The book was written by Douglas Huneke, and while I was living in the flat a film crew came from Germany to do a documentary about him that was afterwards featured at Jewish film festivals.

Gregory Engels <Gregory.Engels@...> asked about the daughters of Rose GORDIN (1885-1969) and Jacob ETKIN (1887-1953) of New York -- Annie LASTMAN (1909-1993), Florence ETKIN (1912-1975), Sylvia (Nov 1917-?), and Lillian (Nov. 1919-?).

In Ancestry's New York birth index, I found a Sylvia ETKIN born 19 Jan. 1918 in Brooklyn, then searched further for a Sylvia with that birth date. Found in the California death index:

Sylvia ALBERT
Social Security #: 088124395 [a NY Social Security number]
Birth Date: 19 Jan 1918
Death Date: 22 Jun 1968
Death Place: Alameda
Mother's Maiden Name: GORDON

An obituary found on newspapers.com confirms that she's the right person. It mentions husband George J. ALBERT and children Paul, Robert and Frederick ALBERT, all of Oakland CA; mother Rose ETKIN of Floral Park NY; sisters Ann LASTMAN, Florence ETKIN, and Lillian TEITZMAN, all of New York. Sylvia died in San Leandro CA and is buried at Home of Eternity Cemetery in Oakland.

Sylvia's three sons' births are listed in Ancestry's California Birth Index (https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/5247/). Search for surname ALBERT and mother's name ATKIN.

This is probably Lillian:

born 6 Nov 1919 Brooklyn
married Benjamin TEITZMAN (1918-1994)
died 14 Apr 2002
buried Cedar Park Cemetery, New Jersey

Listings on BeenVerified.com suggest a connection to Peter Alan TEITZMAN (1943- 2003). He's on a tree on Ancestry; try writing the tree's submitter.

Re: Prohibition Bootleggers and Sacramental Wine "Fake Rabbis" #usa #general

krausj2@...

Sorry to promote my own wares a little, but me new book The Kosher Capones, about Chicago's Jewish gangsters has a small bit about some gangsters who rob a supply of sacramental wine during Prohibition. (See the section on Jules Portuguese.)

I didn't have room in this final version of the book, but there's a bizarre story about the racketeer Max Eisen who came to prominence by monopolizing kosher chicken. It got so bad that, in at least one telling, many Chicago Jews went vegetarian in an effort to break his stranglehold.

Good luck,

I just wanted to say that children were sometimes enumerated in their parents' homes, and were also enumerated in other households or locations. The parents may have misunderstood the directions, or the Census was taken on different days.

In general the copyright in Germany is 70 years after the death of the author (or the last of the authors). If the article was published with an pseudonym or anonymous, then the copyright is 70 years after publication. For everything else you would need a license (or a waiver).

The Berline Tagblatt was merged into Deutscher Verlag, then Ullstein, that in turn into Axel Springer SE - contact form https://www.axelspringer.com/en/contactform
The Copyright for Die Rote Fahne is murky. You could include the clipping with the following disclaimer: http://rightsstatements.org/page/CNE/1.0/?language=en
and obtain a license in case the rightsholder will notice you.

Re: Given name Ksyel

My father, born in the United States to Lithuanian immigrants, was
Kasile. If I could figure out for whom he was named, that would be a
HUGE help!

He liked the name Kasile but changed his first name to John when he was
about 40 -- Kasile apparently posed a professional liability, as no one
could pronounce or spell it.

Revision Lists for Ostrog are available (depending on the year) in the Ostrog Regional Museum, and the Kiev and Zhitomir Archives.  Some translations appear on the Krements KehilaLinks page on JewishGen.  What year(s) are you looking for?
