Reply on Zaslav - surname LEIBSON #ukraine

Becker, Scott

Hi Guy,

For all surname research relative to Zaslav/Izyaslav, the one to contact
is Daniel Kazez (a Wittenberg professor). Just google for him and send him
a message. Several years ago he spearheaded extensive research and can
provide spreadsheets, perhaps against a contribution.

By the way: I passed through Zaslav by bike in the summer of 2004 and took
lots of pictures of the old Jewish cemetery, the town and the countryside.
I can get them to you if you're interested. I also biked on to Yampol and
Teofipol, with a short stop at Bilohorodka. Took tons of pictures everywhere.
It was a very enriching experience!

Best regards,

We have a ship manifest (or some such) showing my paternal
grandfather's father (Yitzchok LEIBSON and Eva nee GORSKY) coming from
Zaslav (no country). I understand this to be equivalent to Izyaslav.
I put it into the Ukraine SIG surname database.
Does anyone know how I can find out the names of any Zaslav Leibsons?

The Miller's of Marjiampole or Ludvinovas #lithuania

Jack Miller <jmiller@...>

I am trying to track my family origins in Lithuania. The surname Miller
doesn't appear on any of the passenger lists coming into Canada at the
time my grandfather Nathan Miller (1865-1947) came in 1884 with his wife
Dubbie Phillips Miller, along with a brother Moses. His parents Nussim
(1835-1913) and Deborah (1841-1916) came in the 1890s along with other
brothers and 2 sisters. The siblings, besides Nathan and Moses were Jacob,
Abraham, Rachel and Refke, with another brother Phillip coming later we
think.

Family lore has it that they came >from Marjampole but other bits of
evidence point perhaps to Ludvinova(s) which is about 6 miles to the
south. One brother Phillip (Feival) went back to Ludvinovas as his wife
Chana was unhappy in Canada. They died in the holocaust we believe since
the fammily was in contact until then. There are no Millers in the
Marjampole lists that I could find. They obviously had a European name,
which was lost (one uncle thought it might have been Milarsky another
Midlarsky but that gets me nowhere. Family lore also has a brother getting
seasick and bailing out in England or Ireland.

Any suggestions as to possible names and/or where to look.

Military records for Austria, Poland, Galicia #poland

Eli Brauner

Roberta,
The origin of the FHL records regarding Galicia is mostly the Lviv
Historic Archive.

First step is to find out his regiment number; Every big city had
its regiment. Google and you will find ....I believe.
Than you can address the War Archive in Vienna and ask them ....
and you will also know which regional archive in Ukraine has the
personal files of the particular regiment.

The Family History Library has many microfilms for military records
listed in its catalog. I am trying to determine which microfilms
to start with.

Abraham Benjamin SCHONHOLZ served in the Austrian army twice.
The first time he took the place of a married brother. Abraham was born
about 1860, lived in Zaleszczyki, although he may be >from Tarnopol.
His first child was born in Zaleszczyki about 1885.

The second time was 1915 to 19?? when he was drafted by the Austrian
army after a failed attempt to leave Zaleszczyki. He was finally able
to leave for the U. S. in 1921.

Any guidance will be appreciated.

discrepancy in birth town in indexes #poland

Avigdor Ben-Dov <avigdorbd@...>

Perhaps someone can explain why the 1897 Lomza Gubernia census lists
Zalewy Poland as the birthplace of Liba Dwerja RUTKIEWICZ, whereas an
index >from the Zambrow PSA births shows the very same Lyba (slight
spelling change) as being born in Zambrow? The Zambrow LDS film is
747733 AKT B225. Which one is correct? Liba's father is Boruch
RUTKIEWICZ who lived in Zalewy, but was born in powiat Lomzynski. I
can't find Zalewy on the Gazetteer, but I have a hunch it is Zawady
where I was born. The puzzle is still annoying me. I can't tie this
family as related to me although the surname is the same. Any
suggestions how to clear this up?

Avigdor Ben-Dov [RUTKIEWICZ]
Jerusalem

MODERATOR'S NOTE: The header on the search results for the Zambrow
LDS indices indicates that all the births, marriages and deaths in
that dataset were REGISTERED in Zambrow, not necessarily that they
all took place in Zambrow. To find out the town or village where
the birth took place, you will need to get the actual record.
Some JRI-Poland indices do list the name of a village in which a
birth, marriage or death took place if it was different >from the
town of registration.

I am replying privately to Jules with the correct name that they
incorrectly have as PERKEL and contact information for his family.

Researchers who are interested in Montreal and Quebec in general
should have a look at the Jewish Genealogical Society of Montreal web
site (http://jgs-montreal.org) which has a number of How-to guides
for researching family, and should also consider contacting us
directly at vital@jgs-montreal.org. We have access to many resources
which are not readily available online.
