Re: Klyosov's article, Thoughts about Jewish DNA Genealogy #dna

Arline and Sidney Sachs

Thanks for Sam Vass's comments. However, I questioned Anatole dates
because of history. Jews started to move into Eastern Europe sometime
between 800 and 1100 years ago. What he is claiming there were no I1,
I2, Q, R2, X, and T until several hundred years later. That does not
make sense to me.

About the Kohanim haplogroup J1, which include the Cohen Modal Hapoltype
(CMH), I believe he is right that it does not go back to Aaron. However
being only 1050 years is about a thousand year off by a method that I
developed and tested using people >from Hammer's Jewish Priests study and
from Family Tree DNA's Cohen project. This was the time of the second
Temple when the High Priesthood was sold. Bennett Greenspan, President of
FamilyTreeDNA, told some J2s many years ago this when they asked how come
they do not have the CMH.

Sidney Sachs

From: Sam Vass <SVass@...>
Date: Fri, 4 Apr 2014 12:32:37 -0700

Population geneticists still use an erroneous mutation rate in their
publications that makes their age computations too long. Several
years ago, Anatole Klyosov and I computed the age of R1b-V88 groups
in the Levant and North Africa with him getting 4k years and me 4.5k
years each using our own methods. His results are within the
commonly accepted error range.

The origin of a single subclade is computed using the least squared
average variance for their common markers. The nodal branch date
estimate between two branches is computed then back >from there. I
use a formula developed by the physicist, Ken Nordtvedt.

Abraham could just as easily have been an R1b as a J. I think
Anatole is just trying to avoid a diversionary argument.

Re: Adoption in Czarist Russia to escape conscription - need help! #general

Mel Werbach <mel@...>

My paternal great great grandfather, Chayim Mikhel, was born to Avraham and his wife in 1824 in Bazaliya, Ukraine. Three years later, military conscription for Jews was mandated, so - according to family lore - Avraham arranged for the local VERBUKH family to legally adopt Chayim Mikhel to avoid conscription. The results of recent DNA testing suggest that the Verbukhs were not close relatives.

For many years, I have tried unsuccessfully to discover the correct family line for Chayim Mikhel and his parents as adoption records, as well as any earlier records, appear to have been destroyed. One family source stated that Chayim Mikhel initially had the surname of HORNSTEIN - but this is unconfirmed by any evidence.

I would love to trace my direct paternal line further back, but if I can't do so, I would at least like to confirm the family story:

Did the legal adoption help to protect Chayim Mikhel >from conscription? If so, does that mean he had at least one older (or younger) male sibling? Is there a reference that explains how adoption was protective?

Any light that could be shed on this would be most appreciated.

First Jednitzer Society and new Yiskor book translation for Beltsy #bessarabia

I have been researching our family history and discovered >from census
records, marriage records, etc. that my family comes >from Beltsy which my
great grandfather Sam Poses left for New York around 1900.

I have been told recently by a descendant of his sister (her grandmother) that she was
told they come >from Telenesty, which is not that far away.  I have confirmed
this fact by confirming that her grandmother was buried by the Teleneshter
Landsmanshaft.  So I researched who buried my grandfather and came up with
First Jednitzer Society.  I have checked all lists I could find of
Landsmanshaftn and this one is not listed.  Google comes up with nothing.
Perhaps Jednitzer is a transliteration of Jewish >from some language.  I
was able to get the name and address of the administrator  of the society,
Elaine J. Abrahams >from 212 W. 11th St in NY with a phone number and no area
code, probably >from 1948, so this is a dead end.  Does anybody have any
ideas or knowledge of this society or the meaning of Jednitzer?  By the
way, we have just started a fund to translate the Beltsy Yiskor book.  If
anyone is interested in this information, please contribute. Also, we are
looking for volunteer translators who can work on a chapter or two. Please
let me know if you can help. Thank you.

Which is the town of "Zanzire, Poland"? #general

Roy Ogus

On the Ellis Island passenger list for a relative arriving in New York in
1920, he listed his former residence as "Zanzire, Poland."

Does anyone have any idea to which town this may refer? I had believed that
he had come >from one of the towns in western Belarus, such as Dyatlovo/Zhetel
or Novogorodok, but the ShtetlSeeker couldn't find anything nearby for the
town of "Zanzire".

Thanks for any help.
