Great Meadows Correctional Facility, New York #general

Kathleen Craine

I’ve discovered a distant ancestor, William KOPP, in the 1940 census who
was an inmate in Great Meadows Correctional Facility, Fort Ann, New York.
Has anyone else done research on someone incarcerated in this facility?
What resources might be explored to find out more about why he was in
prison, how long, etc.?

Holocaust in Vilkaviskis #lithuania

This year the Vilkaviskis Municipality will be marking Lithuanian Holocaust
Day [23rd September] by the reading of the names of all the Jewish Victims.

I have written to all those people that I know had family in Vilkaviskis
requesting the names of their victims .

If you have information on the names of Jewish victims and have not received
my letter I would greatly appreciate hearing >from you privately.

Thank you for your attention.

Current street names in Riga, Latvia #latvia

Sue Levy

While I can't help Alison with specific street names, she might find it
useful to know that these names could well be superseded by Latvian names.
Dynaburg is the old Yiddish name for Dvinsk, now known as Daugavpils, and
the same might apply to the other names she lists. I came across this issue
when visiting Jaunjelgava and realized that Mitauskaya had become Jelgavas
iela.

The suffix 'skaya' can only mean 'street', and the Latvian equivalent is
'iela'.

The number following each street name is the house number, which also could
have changed or vanished altogether.
I hope that helps. Good luck with your quest, and enjoy your visit to a very
beautiful country.

New York German language periodicals 19th Century ? #germany

Betty Wood <bettywoodlcsw@...>

I have found a few obituaries and other announcements for my SIMON

Were there German language newspapers published in New York City

Can someone suggest how I might research these periodicals?

Thanks very much, Betty Wood, Marin County, Calif. bettywoodlcsw@gmail.com
