I did research on my father's family. One of his first cousins married a man whose parents were from Stolpce.  The name was Russack.  No one is living would have any recollections, though I will check whether there are any pictures.  Just thought I'd mention it in case it's of any use to you....

My great-grandmother was Filipina LICHTENSTEIN. Her brother Robert's sons settled in Chicago and were known as Fred and George LANE.

Fred's children (according to geni) are: Peter LANE, Nancy LEAVITT, Larry LANE.
I would like to get in contact with them or any surviving family and would be grateful for any leads.

I would also be pleased to hear from any other LICHTENSTEIN family to see if we can work out any connection.

As far as I can see the letters comprise a word that would be pronounced "simoine" [see-moy-ne]. Questions that can help: Perhaps it derives from an English word? An American name for some kind of a bank card? Wikipedia says that credit cards were "born" in the 1920s. Or perhaps there was a department store by a similar name? A calling card?

Hello,

She have been buried in the Orthodox cemetery, also known as "Granatos Street" – of course, since the Kozma Street Cemetery was Neolog.

Chevras HaMaggidim - Pressburg 5666 (1906) #rabbinic #austria-czech #photographs

Mordechai Perlman

This photo is part of our family collection. It depicts a club of young unmarried rabbinic scholars that studied in the prestigious Yeshiva of Pressburg in 5666 (1906) and functioned as part of their club as preachers in the surrounding countryside. I have another two such photos. However, I am asking about this one because my great-grandfather, Rabbi Yoel Jakobovits, appears in it. Rabbi Jakobovits (father of Lord Rabbi Immanuel Jakobovits of England) was a Dayan and Rav in Berlin and post-1938 was a member of the London Beis Din. He appears in the back row, 3rd from the left. I believe his brother, my great-great-uncle Moritz (who later served as Dayan in the German-Jewish Kehilah of Washington Heights, NY) is standing in the same row, 2nd from left.

I am wondering if anybody knows the identity of other members of this club that are depicted in the photo.

Re: Simonia card? #yiddish #translation

Odeda Zlotnick

A "simmaniya" (in Hebrew) is what we used to call the dedicated cards inserted into books to mark the place you stopped reading.
They could be quite elaborate hand made or hand decorated objects - and were of course - used again an again.

In other words: a simmanya card is a bookmark. And the "mo" would be the Ashkenazi pronunciation of the "ma" sound.

I don't what's special about the bookmark mentioned in the letter - perhaps the writer was an artist perhaps it's a sentimental issue, maybe a totally different meaning of the term with which I am not familiar, or even a code the reader would understand and the censor would not fine suspicious.

But it could be a beloved bookmark card.

Looking for Lilly FETTER, Jewish Educator, UAHC Camp Swig Program Director in the 1970's #usa #general

Robinn Magid

Dear JewishGen Friends,

My UAHC Camp Swig Counselor-In-Training Class of 1977 – just had our first reunion (Yes, on Zoom) and we are looking for our CIT ’77 Program Director, Lilly FETTER. Everyone seems to have lost touch with her about 35 years ago. So far, I know she was born December 9, 1952; attended Alexander Hamilton High School in Los Angeles; was the religious school director at Congregation Beth El in Berkeley in 1980; was the director of a new Jewish day school in West Covina called “San Gabriel & Pomona Valley Jewish Day School” in 1981 – and that’s where my clues end. If I interpret a newspaper article correctly, Lilly’s parents may have been Shoah survivors.

There was another Hamilton High School student named Fay Fetter (z’’l) who may have been her younger sister. Fay married an orthopedist in Los Angeles named Scott Goldman.

If you can help me find Lilly FETTER or can add a factoid to this thin portrait we have for her, please write me privately at: Robinn.Magid@...

Thank you!

Looks like the Ukrainian surname from the Russian "lebed' " for "swan"

Re: Finding a Location: Padol, Russia (eta. 1875) #russia

the Gubernia is after the town Kamenets-Podolsk, its center.
It stands in the lower part of Ukraine, as "pod" is the russian for "under"
