Paul BERMANN from Montpellier #france

Bert de Jong <bdejong67@...>

Dear French-Sig members,

I have been researching the BERMANN family >from Germany for 14 years,
and now am searching for Paul/Lucien BERMANN, born August 20, 1898
in Antwerp, Belgium.

I have a statement >from him given to the arrondisement territorial
Geneve >from July 18, 1945 in which he tells that he lived at that
time in Camp de travail de Tramelan, and his previous
address was: Paris , 59 Boulevard Beau-Sejour, 16eme.
He further tells that he had lived in Holland, but in 1926 moved to
Paris, France.

In June 1940 he left Paris and went to Montpellier, in 1942 he fled to
Switzerland. In a document >from the Swiss police dated September 15, 1942
it shows that he illegally crossed the border to Switzerland on
September 5, 1942. And that he is in Camp Varembe at this time, but should
be brought to the police office in Geneve, Franc. Another document shows
that he was in Camp Tramelan in October 1, 1943. He was in Sierre,
Wallis, Switzerland in November 1942, Tramelan May 27, 1943
A.I. Siders in May 1943.

Another document shows that he is arrested at Bardonnex on July 18,1945
illegally passing the border, and was brought to Camp de Matten in
Interlaken, Belgium. On July 28, 1945 he received a laissez-passer >from
Bern, Switzerland. He should travel to Camp de Charmilles, Geneve,
France on August 2, 1945. I found him also on a voters list >from the 60s
as he lived in Montpellier, but after that I can't find a trace.

Does anybody know more about Paul/Lucien BERMANN?

Regards,
Bert de Jong

Universities and Czech Jews in the early 20th Century #austria-czech

rfc974@...

Hi folks:

If you were Jewish and wanted to become an engineer, medical doctor or
attorney, what university would you attend in Bohemia/Czechoslovakia
in the early 1900s?

I ask because a large number of my cousins were indeed, engineers,
doctors or attorneys, and I am have difficulty tracking down where
they got their degrees.

Thanks!

Austria-Czech SIG #Austria-Czech Universities and Czech Jews in the early 20th Century #austria-czech

rfc974@...

Thanks!

Craig

surnames: Pijursky and Fainberg from Taurage #lithuania

Nicole Martin <nmartin81@...>

Hi there. I recently found a whole new branch on my family tree that I had
been looking for for the better part of a decade. This was wonderful and
now I have NEW names to look into and hopefully even more family to
discover.

My family was in Taurage, Lithuania. The great-great grandparents were
born in the 1850s and were Morris (Moshe) and Ida (Chaya) Abram. Most
of their children went to the US in the early 20th century and changed
their surname to Horwitz.

I have found 2 daughters who stayed in Lithuania. There was:

Ita Abrams who married and Avraham Pijursky (I have seen numerous
spellings) I found a page of testimony at Yad Vashem for Ita and for
several of her children and grandchildren. 2 children survived: Sonja
and Isaac. Both of them were liberated >from Kaufering in 1945 and I
believe relocated to Israel.

Rive Abram married Leiba Fainberg. They had several children whose fates
I am unsure of. The names are Jacob, Isaac, Peisackh, Mottel and Base.
(There may have been more) The documents I have found seem to support
Rive being a sister of my great grandfather but it could be an error as
this is a brand new person no one had heard of prior.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Nicole Horwitz-Martin

Russian translation request #poland

Mara Friedman <mara.friedman@...>

I have posted a vital record in Russian for which I need a loose
translation. It is on Viewmate at the following address:
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM32562

It is a marriage certificate >from a wedding that took place in the Irena
district in Poland in 1891 for Szyia Frydman and Chana Ruchla Festman.

Any help that can be provided would be most appreciated.
Thanks.
