Eva Lawrence
Statements like Michael Tobias's do need a time-frame and a place marker. Clerks fluent in passengers' languages have to emigrate too at an earlier date, and not all ports would install such resources at the same time. I have first-hand evidence of no formal immigration controls in New Orleans in 1852, for instance, and lax exit control in Antwerp for the same voyage. In fact, does he mean immigration to America or is he including Britain, where immigration controls were very haphazard.?. .

What's more, has Michael Tobias never failed to make out a surname on a manuscript passenger list? When typed lists came in his statement becomes more credible.

Re: Seeking information on a village named Horodok, Vilna

I am referring to the Horodok listed below - I believe that Horodok is the Hebrew name and Gorodok s Russian. I have been corresponding with this group for many years. They have a wonderful group of teens and older people who have rebuilt the Horokok Cemetery.
our grandmother said they were from Horodok, Vilna Gubernya but I have never found anything about the family there. Names of Sepsenwol, Shepsenvol, Schiff, Shiff, are maiden names of the women in the family. If I were you, I would read up on the town Königsberg, presently Russia, once Prussia etc. Its location is quetched in between north-east Poland and south-west Lithuania. It has changed country owners more times than characters in its name, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C3%B6nigsberg

In Rusian:
На фотографии напечатано: Фотография Леонарди Луцк
Написано от руки: 1904 г. От Янкель Ортенберг На Память
Translate into English:
Printed on the photo: Leonardi's Photo Lutsk
Handwritten: 1904 From Yankel Ortenberg On the memory
Comments:
It is written in Russian, but with mistakes, conjugate not enforced, Word “Memory (Память)” not spelling right. It’s common for Jewish people, they know Yiddish well but not Russian. And this region – Lutsk, is was a lot of Polish spiking people there and it is not help to spell Russian better.

Debbie,
I agree with you that it could say besaivah tovah (in old age) but given her age of 62 (even if it was 1912) it doesn't seem like something truly out of the ordinary to make a point of in the epitaph. Maybe I'm overestimating the life expectancy for that time.

I am not sure about the 1890's because of all the lamps. They appear to be electric so I might be inclined to think 1900's. Regardless, they look happy on this holiday or simcha. Thanks for posting.

My late father z"l's father's family (Baranovich) was in Horodok for generations. the thing is first to make sure we are talking about the same village. Horodok Gorodok Grudek etc just means little village. My father said he knew of 5 towns by that name, 2 near Minsk and one called David-Gorodok. Many years ago my Israeli cousins made a website about the town.
The letter you bring does not give contact info, and their website is all in Belorussian. Rabbi Elchonon Baron rabbi_baron@... +972-2-586-7766

Harlan,
The preface to her name on the record says "Kurenetzky meschanin" or "Kurenetzky bourgeois". Now you have a prior location if you didn't previously have this information. I hope this helps. Others will have to help with the column to the left of the names. Joel Ratner Former coordinator, LitvakSIG Vital Records Translation Project
