Correction: Holocaust Remembrance Day article link
#general
Apollo Israel <apollo@...>
Some people have pointed out to me that somehow I gave the wrong link to the
article I mentioned yesterday. The correct link is: http://www.israelhayom.com/site/newsletter_opinion.php?id=7161 My apologies to everyone. The article, headed "The things we can still learn," tells how, starting with a clue in JewishGen, I was able to uncover the story of my great-grandmother's brother and his previously unknown family in the Holocaust. Hope you read it, Miriam Bulwar David-Hay, Raanana, Israel.

ROSEN and RODBERT from Poland/Russia help needed please
#general
rcbernstein
A "cousin" and I are trying to find our ancestors and the link between us.
We'd be happy to hear any suggestions or if someone recognises one of the people listed below that might crack our case. We just cannot seem to identify any town for any of these probably related families nor find any records in Eastern Europe that match up to what we know so far. My family: Shmuel ROSEN and his children Sarah and Simon/Yeshaya >from Poland/Russia. Her family: Yitschak HaLevi and Annie/Chana RODBERT and their children Sophia/Sofka, Rita/Rebecca, and Marks/Mortke all >from Poland/Russia The riddle so far: My grandfather's sister (Sarah ROSEN, born Russia 1889, died London 1976), went to London in about 1904. She and my GF Simon (Yeshaya, born Russia 1896, died London 1969) were the only two children born to Shmuel (mother unknown) before he died in Russia about 1898, their mother never emigrated. Sarah arrived in London (about 1904) and in the 1911 census is living with her cousin Annie/Chana RODBERT (bat Mordecai born Russia about 1871, died London 1940, her husband Yitschak HaLevi doesn't appear to have left Russia) and her three children, Sophia/Sofka (born Russia abt 1890, died London 1963) Rita/Rebecca (Chana Sarah born Russia abt 1891, died London 1957), and Marks/Mortke (born Russia abt 1892-97, died London 1953). They do not appear in the 1891 census but the girls do appear in the 1901 census where they're shown as Sophie & Rebecca ROSEBLATT, mother Sarah at 22 Pelham Street. Marks appears in a school record in 1896 & 99 as Mark ROSBLOOD. In 1911 they are in Varden St as RODBERT but the cover sheet has ROODBLAT. Sarah married Lewis/Yehuda Leib RICHTER in 1915 (born Lepel, Belarus 1887, died London 1965). Lewis does not appear in the 1911 census and in his naturalisation application claimed to have immigrated in 1912. We can find no records in or around Lepel for Lewis or his parents Solomon and Asna (nee RABINOVICH), nor his sister Alter or his brother Morris/Moshe. As he's not direct family this doesn't bother us but would still be nice of we could find something. Sarah and Lewis changed their name to RICHARDS after they married and had two children in London, Cecil and Betty (later to be SHAW/SHORE). My GF Simon married Rose FINKLE (>from Romania) in 1919 and had three children, Alf, Sandra (sarah) and Sylvia. We have found that Annie's daughter Rita/Rebecca RODBERT went to visit her cousin Freyda PERELMAN in NY in 1910. We've also found that Freyda (born Russia 1848) and husband Max/Motel (born Russia 1846) arrived in NY in 1902 with children Rachel (born Russia 1885), Lea (born Russia 1886). They already had a daughter Sarah (born Russia 1883) living in America. We think that their place of origin shown in the passenger list is Volhynia but this hasn't helped. Just to add to the PERELMAN connection to us, Simon ROSEN's marriage auth has Morris PERELMAN of 160 Brick Lane as a witness. Although no link has yet been found between Morris and those in US. We have been through the usual info gathering fairly carefully - family knowledge, birth records, marriage records and authorisations, naturalisation records, passenger lists with no result. We've also scoured the JG records and ordered dozens of possible matches on the off-chance that something matches - no luck. Do you know who any of these people mentioned are or have any ideas that might help with our quest? Anything would be appreciated. TIA, Ruvane BERNSTEIN (Beitar, Israel)

Researching Raisa KAPLAN
#general
maria farber
Dear Sir/ Madam
I am researching a family mystery. Our Grandma Raisa Kaplan was born in Russia in 1916. For some reason, unknown to us, her parents left the country and immigrated to Germany leaving their small daughter (about 2 years old then) with an elderly nanny. The nanny died and Raisa had to go to the Jewish orphanage. When we asked her for details, she would get really upset and not talk at all. Raisa's Father was Isaak (paternal name Abram) Kaplan. Her mother was Sara (Vanshtein or Wanstein) Kaplan. When Raisa was in 7th grade, a representative >from Germany, possible her parents' friend came to take her to Germany to reunite with her parents. But our then young grandma refused to leave with him. Our grandma Raisa has now died in her 90th... The mystery died with her.... Please let me know if you happened to know how I go about researching this ancient tale? I speak no German... Only English and Russian. Thank you, Maria Farber USA
