Tribute to Christine Usdine and her Art #unitedkingdom

Arlene Beare

I was really distressed when I learned that Christine had passed away. She
was like a close friend in spite of the fact that we never met personally.
A lot has been written in the past week and all of it true. Her mother was
the sole surviving member of her family who perished in the Holocaust and so
Christine wanted to make a fitting memorial to all her lost relatives. She
has left a legacy that is invaluable.

She was a graduate of the Institute of Eastern languages of Paris ( Russian
and Chinese) but told me she had forgotten a lot of her Chinese.
She worked for her father who owned an big industrial foundry and had her
own Art workshop there.
In 1981/ 1982 she studied Art foundry lost wax process in different places
in the USA( Northern Michigan University of Marquette, in Indiana, Texas and
New Mexico.)

from 1987 she ran her own little foundry in a very touristic medieval
village Perouges, north of Lyon. http://www.perouges.org/default.html .
She specialized in Jewish art but once she started doing the translations
no longer had much time for her art.

She sent me a link to a video of her work and you may be interested in
looking at it. She sold most of her sculptures to Jewish Americans

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dT6Kzbn7M4

May she rest in peace. I shall miss her.

SAEVITZ, SAYAVITZ, SAYEVITCH, SAYERS and other variant spellings #unitedkingdom

While trying to find out more about my father-in-law and his family I looked
at the Ancestry registers for schools in London (currently indexed for
1840-1911). I had no success in finding any of the family, and can only
assume that either the relevant school registers are yet to be included on
the site, or that they have been destroyed, or (highly unlikely) that the
children did not go to school. The names I was searching for are those of
the children of Nathan Saevitz and Rebecca (Bessy) nee Troshansky who appear
to have emigrated to London c 1905/6: Herschel (Harry) b Kremenchug,
Ukraine, c1902; Louis b Kriukov, Ukraine, c 1904; Joseph, b Stepney, 1906;
Barnett, b Stepney 1908; Esther b Stepney 1916; Gertie, c Stepney 1917.

In looking through the registers I found a Jacob Sayavitz who was born on 16
August 1893, son of Abram, address 120 Nathaniel Buildings, Tower Hamlets.

I also have DNA information relating to the Saevitz line (who, incidentally,
were Levites). Nathan was born in Romny in Sumy Oblast, Ukraine, c 1877. I
believe (but have yet to prove) that his parents were Movsha Avram Hirsch
Gillels Saevitz and his wife Esther Haya.

I'd be very pleased to hear >from anyone with information on the above Jacob
or his father as it is possible that he is a cousin of the above. Any
information on the Saevitz line in Romny would be very gratefully received.

Thank you.

Staff at Kitchener Camp #unitedkingdom

Robert Fraser

Dear Readers -

As many readers will know, two members of the (UK) Jewish
Lads Brigade were instrumental in organising activities at
Kitchener Camp >from 1939 onwards. They were Jonas May and
his brother Phineas. I believe that they later became
officers in the Pioneer Corps. I have read much about their
work and about the Camp generally, including a copy of the
Journal that they produced in the camp.

But mention is frequently made in the material I've read of
a third member of the staff: M Banks. I can't find out
anything about him - not even his given name.

I suppose there might be documents in archives or
repositories such as the Wiener Library in London or the UK
National Archives, but as much as I can read online makes no
mention. I'd love to know a bit about him. Can anyone
assist?

My connection is that my late parents spent time in
Kitchener Camp.

Seaching for family MODELL from Zhitomir #ukraine

Robert Hill

I am researching my wife's family of birth, MODELL. I've got pretty
good basic information about them here in the US, but am looking for a
way to trace back to Ukraine.

There were three brothers who came to the US >from Zhitomir -- Henry
MODELL, b. ~1872, immigrated ~1904; David MODELL, b. ~1886, immigrated
~1906, and Samuel MODELL, b. 1883, immigrated ~1908.
All three are buried in the same cemetery in Flushing, NY. All three
have their Hebrew names on their tombstones -- in two cases the
patronymic is Moshe, in the third case it is Moshe Aharon. In the case
of Samuel, his immigration record lists his nearest relative in his
place of origin as his father Moses MODELL. So the strong likelihood is
that that is the name to pursue.

There is family lore, but no evidence, of other siblings who remained in
Ukraine and did not immigrate. The first names of these siblings are
Abraham and Peter.

I would be grateful for any information or advice about how to trace
these MODELLs back in Zhitomir. I'm pretty good at US genealogy, but am
a complete novice at Ukrainian records.

Thanks in advance -
Robert Hill

Surname: Foos #ukraine

stevek863@...

Max Brown of St. Louis, MO
wanted to know about the surname
Foos.....

Foos might be a variant of the surname "Fuchs." My grandfather's
official surname in the US was Fox. In many documents for him and his
relatives there were surnames such as Fuchs, Fuks, Fiz and Fix.
Depending on the dialect it is possible that Fuchs, the German and
Yiddish word for "Fox" was pronounced 'Foos.'

JGSOC and South Orange County JGS Newsletter #general

Michelle Sandler

I am looking for a complete run of Avi Avot the newsletter of the Jewish
Genealogy Society of Orange County. This ran >from 1983 - 1993. My copies
were given to a IAJGS micro filming project years ago. I never got them back.

I am also looking for the full run of the newsletter of the South Orange
County Jewish Genealogy Society. I think it was called Shorashim. I do not
know the years. I want to add them to my new OCJGS library that I am creating.

I would also like Avotaynu >from the beginning until 1995-96. I have gotten
16 years of donations 1996 - 2011. I have extra copies of the later years
to give away. Come get them or pay for postage.

Janette <janettes@...>

I am helping a friend find his daughter who was born in December 1964 or
January 1965 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. The
biological mother's name, Joyce Kotler, was on the birth certificate.
The father's name, Jack Decker was not. Joyce and Jack lived in Chicago
and were 17 years old and in high school when their daughter was born.
ALthough they got married when they turned 18, about six months after
the baby was born, their parents did not permit them to get married or
keep the baby while they were in high school.

If this information sounds like you or someone you know, please email
me. Jack is very ill and wants to connect with his daughter. Joyce
died many years ago. They attorney who handled the adoption is also
deceased.
