Koniuchowsky Collection of Lithuanian Holocaust Survivor Testimonies #general

Ann Rabinowitz

Fascinating is the long-delayed release of the Koniuchowsky collection of
Lithuanian Holocaust survivor testimonies which has been written about in
Haaretz in Israel by Dr. Efraim Zuroff:
http://www.haaretz.com/culture/books/remembering-the-lithuanian-jews-killed-by-their-neighbors-1.466562
[or http://tinyurl.com/ak55q9w --Mod.]
He also mentions several other resources which have become available including
Ellen Cassedy's new book.

One of the unique aspects of the collection is how it was put together and how
Leib Koniuchowsky developed the questionnaires that were used. This is
discussed in a book edited by David Bankier and Dan Michman which may interest
many of you that is entitled: "Holocaust Historiography in Context, Emergence
Challenges Polemics and Achievements":
http://books.google.com/books?id=aNzjTUT6jdYC&pg=PA488&lpg=PA488&dq=koniuchowsky&source=bl&ots=U_jG554CdP&sig=ziu_IZ1kxB3P12sMS-31VF9U9W8&hl=en&sa=X&ei=xJERUfutM8GjyAGisYDYCg&ved=0CDoQ6AEwAjgK#v=onepage&q=koniuchowsky&f=false
[or http://tinyurl.com/afrjqvb --Mod.]

Researchers can also visit the Yad Vashem site to view 96 out of the 157 photos
which accompany some of the testimonies:
http://collections.yadvashem.org/photosarchive/en-us/70058-container.html
[or http://tinyurl.com/b67ypg9 --Mod.]

The testimonies cover interviews in the following districts: Alytus, Birzai,
Eisiskiai, Keidainiai, Kaunas, Kretinga, Lazdikai, Marijampole, Mazeikiai,
Panevezys, Raseiniai, Rokiskis, Sakiai, Siauliai, Svencionys, Taurage, Telsiai,
Trakai, Utena, Ukmerge, Vikaviskis, Vilnius and Zarasai. Combined with the
photographs, they are a powerful tool for family research during the Holocaust.
They point out viscerally the integral part played by the Lithuanian neighbors
of the Jews in their destruction.

Please see a more detailed discussion on the JewishGen Blog in a day or two.

Searching TEICHER, CLORER from Karlsruhe #general

Karen Westerlaken <karen.westerlaken@...>

Hi my name is Karen. Ive been trying to find my family history and
have hit a dead end and don't know where to look next.

The information I have is my grand mothers (Matilda) fathers name was
Pinkas TEICHER. He was born in Kolomea / Galicia (Austria-Hungary,
now Poland) in 1889. He Married Karoline Wilhelmine CLORER (born
Mannheim) around 1915. They lived in a place called Karlshrue.

I have a basic knowledge of what happened to them, but I cant seem to
go back any further. I would appreciate any help with how to find out
who Pinkas parents were and Karolines parents were.

Thank you.

Re: British naturalization file #general

Sherri Bobish

Steve Cooper asked about British naturalization info.

Although I don't have an answer to his specific question, I suggest
this website:

http://www.movinghere.org.uk/search/default.asp

You can search by person's name, or by town.

They do seem to have a lot on people who came to Britain during the
WWII timeframe.

WALTZMAN / WALZMAN, Ustrzyki Dolne (Istryker), Pol.
BOJDA, Tarnobrzeg, Pol.
LEFFENFELD, Daliowa, Pol.
SOLON / SOLAN / SOKOLSKY, Grodek (Bialystok), Pol.
BOBISH, Odessa (?)

There is often little or no connection between the original name and
the one chosen in the U.S.

Both my gm's were Chana. One used the name Anna, the other Helen.
My ggm Krasle called herself Rose.

One interesting way to see a list of people with a particular first
name is to use the EIDB portal at www.stevemorse.org You can search
by first name only. I found 5 hits for the first name Elster, but
none for Gnesze.
