Help Need in Paris - an Update #general

Allan Jankie

Thank you to everybody who contacted me with offers of help.
Just another reminder of how lucky we are to belong to JewishGen.
About 2 hours ago I received an email >from my prospective cousin's first
cousin (also my cousin) who speaks English fluently.
It's a fabulous feeling discovering a 'whole branch' of my Tree that I
didn't know existed.

Some salutary lessons have been learned by me over the past couple of days
that might be of interest to the Discussion Group.

Never ignore old sources for information. I hadn't checked on Yad Vashem for
about 12 months and found a Page of Testimony that I hadn't bothered looking
at because it seemed to be outside the parameters of my family history.
Now I know better!

Don't be afraid of asking for help >from the Jewish Genealogical world. I
asked the French Jewish Genealogical Society for help and they were
marvellous. I'm not sure why I'm surprised about that, as I know that here
in Australia our Jewish Genealogical Society tries to assist on all
enquiries that come in.

I foolishly forgot about the French SIG on JewishGen, which I'm reliably
informed would have aided me in my search.

I suppose the point I'm making is that we have the advantage of having so
many tools available to assist us in our research, we just need to remember
to use them!
Thanks again

Re: Rabbi Daniel COHEN D'AZEVEDO #rabbinic

Micheline GUTMANN

" Rabbi Daniel Cohen d'Azevedo was the son of Rabbi David Cohen d'Azevedo
whom he succeeded as the Chief Rabbi of the Portuguese Synagogue in
Amsterdam. 1779 until 1812 were the years of his rabbinate in the
Amsterdam synagogue. He married Esther Rodrigues Brandon in 1779...."

Something does not fit very well, because there is a marriage in London
in 1779, at Bevis Marks synagogue Of Daniel of Moses COHEN d'AZEVEDO with
Esther Rodrigues BRANDON. A brother and two sisters married there too.
I know that the sister Rachel who married Menasseh DELGADO in 1786, same
place, had at least a daughter Jemina DELGADO who married Daniel HART in
Kingston Jamaica in 1823.

This Daniel could then be a Rabbi in Amsterdam, in that case there is a
problem about the father's first name.

Best regards.

Hello,
Does anyone know if there are pictures or names of individuals who died
serving in the Russian military during the 1860's on a monument in
Sevastopol, Ukraine. The monument was designed by a Francois Vernet. Also
does anyone know if there is a list of people buried in the Jewish Cemetery.
I am looking for members of my family who lived in Sevastopol >from the
l870's through at least 1930. Any advice would be appreciated. Please feel
free to respond to me privately.

Cemeteries in Horodok area #galicia

Sherri Venezia

After visiting my ancestral towns to the West of Lviv last Fall, I
realized that I had not learned where the former Jewish cemeteries
might have been located. I did look in the cemetery area outside of
Horodok, but even after inquiring with locals, did not find any former
Jewish cemeteries or areas of the cemeteries we did find that had any
signs of Jewish graves. I wonder if anyone knows where Jewish families
would have been buried if they lived in Tuchapy or Hartfeld
(Rzeczyczny), Horodok, or the areas around (south, up in the hills)
Sadowa Wisznia or Mosciska? I did find the Holocaust memorial
gravesite in Horodok, now being encroached upon by new housing, but no
actual former cemetery. I would appreciate any ideas that any of the
Gesher Galicia group might have. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on
this topic.
