Fishman from Bobruisk #belarus

Charlie

I have been searching the JewishGen data on Bobruisk with no success,
either the names or the dates do not match my family's history. I know
there is a Synagogue in Bobruisk and I have learned there are 9 people
in the Bobruisk phone book named Fishman. Is there a way to contact
someone in Bobruisk, that could provide some help. My grandmother,
Etta died in Bobruisk around 1920 and should be buried there. My
Grandfather's name taken >from his passport application in 1922 is
Benya Yevzev Fishman. I would appreciate any assistance.

Name of town in Poland or Ukraine #general

Henry Wellisch <henry.kelwel@...>

A distant relative of mine was borne in a Polish town, which is
supposed now to be in Ukraine. The name of the place is something like
"Ivanie Pusta". Does anyone know where this is?

searching info on uncle who died mysteriously in Baltimore Md mid-1960's #general

Janice Faye Rosen

I am searching for information on my uncle Henry Friedman who was
born in New York City around 1913/1914, and died in Baltimore,
Maryland during the early 1960's. He grew up in or near
Jeffersonville, NY and Liberty, NY.
He worked as a traveling salesman and moved around alot, living in
different places, Newark, NJ and Baltimore, MD among them.

He was found dead in his apartment in Baltimore by a neighbor and
the only next of kin contact was that of my parents (he was my
mother's brother).
The police came to my parents house where we were living in
Virginia that time to inform them of Uncle Henry's death. The
year was probably 1963/1964/1965.

He never married and had no children. All of his siblings have
passed away. I have checked ancestry.com, findagrave.com, and the
Maryland Department of Vital Statistics, but have not been able to
turn up any information. There are so many men named Henry Friedman,
too, which makes it difficult to know which one is the correct one.

Would there possibly be a news clip in a newspaper at that time
describing this man found dead in his apartment and the police
having no information on him except his sister's address in Virginia?

Thank you for your help.

Opinion re: Archives.com #general

msalzbank

I would imagine that most of use quite extensively resources like
ancestry.com, and StephenMorse.org.

Has anyone found other (free or for pay) services worth the effort,
such as Archives.com?

Michael Salzbank

MODERATOR NOTE: Please send opinions privately. Factual information,
such as specific resources available exclusively in one service, will
be considered for posting.

Rabbi Gavriel Zev MARGOLIS #general

A relative by marriage, Rabbi Yosef Sheinin, asked me to track down the
descendants of his great-grandfather, Rabbi Gavriel Zev MARGOLIS, who died
in New York. We found his burial place in www.kevarim.com. Rabbi Margolis
(also known as Reb Velvele) had a son, Menashe and we should like to find
his descendants as well. Rabbi Sheinin has reprinted some of his
great-grandfather's books and would like to share them with his cousins.
Sincerely,

Dr. Ida Selavan Schwarcz

Beth Hamedrash Hagodol (Norfolk Street Shul) on the Lower East Side endangered #rabbinic

Rabbi Ben-Zion Saydman

Congregation Beth Hamedrash Hagodol, the first Eastern European
synagogue in the Americas, is in danger of being destroyed. BHH,
built in 1850, is located at 60 Norfolk Street on Manhattan's Lower
East Side. Throughout its 163 years, Beth Hamedrash Hagodol has stood
at the center of American Jewish life. To illustrate, the only Chief
Rabbi in New York history, Rabbi Jacob Joseph, held his office at BHH.
Beth Hamedrash Hagodol served as *the* central address of the immigrant
Jewish community during the latter part of the 19th century and the
early part of the 20th century. The history of BHH is the history
shared by most of us. Though granted landmark status in 1967,
financial and structural problems threaten this major piece of
American Jewish history. Some are trying to tear down this holy
structure to build condominiums. On a personal note, my great
grandfather, Ben-Zion MELTSNER, ztz"l, was President of BHH in1900.
For his sake, I personally wish to raise the level of awareness in our
genealogical community. Spread the word!

If you have family ties to Congregation Beth Hamedrash Hagodol and /
or if you would like more information, please contact me.
Thank you!
