There are several Samuel Servian/Server/Serviansky's (all cousins)
in the same generation who lived in variously Liverpool, UK;
Middlesbrough, UK (a rabbinical line who came from Vistytis in
Lithuania which used to be in Suwalki Gubernia until 1919), Chicago,
Pittsburgh, California, Grand Rapids, Toronto and New York. Most
have two first names. My grandfather was Samuel Salmon (Solomon),
and his Liverpool cousin was Samuel Henry (presumably after
Hirsch?). Therefore it is possible Shapsei is one part of a two part name.

I would be interested to hear if anyone else has a Shapsei in their
family and what the English version of the name was most likely to be.

My grandfather emigrated from Opatow, Poland (Russia at that time) to Brazil in 1914. We knew that he had arrived at the very beginning of the First World War. recently I got some documents and a copy of passengers manifest of the vessel that brought him to Brazil, in August 1914.

To my surprise, he came on the British vessel Vauban that sailed from New York approximately on July 25, 1914. Other members of the family that came in other dates all sailed from some European port. So I am wondering about a few things that maybe you would like to speculate or answer affirmatively for me:

• Was this a usual route - sailing from Europe to the US and then to South America ? Sounds expensive for a third class passenger
•  
• Would have he lived in the US for a while ? Did he need a visa to arrive to the US in 1914 from Russian Poland ? Maybe this was just a case of immediate connection (the boat sailed Europe - NY - Rio) and he didn't even leave the boat
•  
• What is the best way to find traces of his stay in or transit through NY ? I have always read several of you discussing US arrivals, but I never paid much attention as it didn't relate to my family history, but now I am curious about what happened

I have not been researching that spelling but of that of MENDELEWICZ, MENDELOVICH and MENDELEWITZ in Belarus. They all mean the same: son of Mendel. The family has roots in Belarus that supposedly go back to 1650. Perhaps we should talk

My great great grandfather was known in Romania as Shapsie, but when he came to America (1889), he Americanized it to Saul.  His Hebrew name was Shabtai (or Shabsai in Ashkenazic pronunciation).

This is the birth certificate registration for Margarita Levinoff, born on Nov 4, 1938 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, to Miguel Levinoff, 27, originally from Vakum (?), Russia and his wife, Aida Bosques, originally from Cuba, married, 17 years old. 
Miguel's parents, both deceased, were Jorge Levinoff and Ana Kuik.
(On the left side, is written Miguel's immigration file number: 82113.
Miguel & Aida's address was: Calle de Guajardo 37, if I can understand correctly the handwriting.
Not a literally translation, but the main points.

Census records show Louis is from Austria.  Citizenship application indicates from Germany - although records indicate Mamie was from Germany.

Suggestions - try to get actual Death Certificate

                        Did Louis have siblings? Did his parents come to US?  You can try searching records for those relatives - passenger manifests, marriage & death certificates. Marriage certificates give place of birth information, citizenship records

Father: Miguel Luvinoff, 27 years old from Vakum, Russia. Miguel is son of Jorge Lubinoff and Ana Kwik, both perished?
Mother: Aída Bosques, 17 years old from Cuba. Aída is daughter of Juan Bosques (40 years old) and Ana Bosques (37 years old).
Margarita' parents were married.

I also am researching Pinkus ancestry. Grandfather Harry (Pinchos)  Pinkus born possibly in Sochachev Poland (near Warsaw) about 1888 and immigrated to US in 1912.. Brother Maier Pinkus was given as contact for a sister Esther Pinkus who immigrated to US in 1923. Father;s name was Wolf/Zev Pinkus. I know nothing about the family prior to immigration or what happened to Maier. Harry Pinkus married Helen Flam from Warsaw in US. Also looking for information on Flam's.

My religious school students copied the names and dates on the memorial plaques in the synagogue.  I remember that there is a push to record this information somewhere.  Can somebody tell me what group collects that information and how I should send the data to them.
