Sounds like it is an attempt to get to Ha Levi or something similar,
transliterating the Hebrew as Ch Lavney, when I look at it and pronounce it, and
the Harry because his English name.

Sort of my using Schlomo (known as Samuel) if the Yiddish on my Jewish birth
certificate is used, which it isn't.

correct version?

Thanks to the leadership and hard work of curator Pam Karp, the Jewish
Families of Krakow project on Geni at
has now reached its first major milestone. Every one of the over 1,000
families identified in Dan Hirshberg's Krakow database is now connected
to the big tree on Geni and indexed on the project page. Now it is quite
easy for others to come and finish the data entry for each family. The
project has 67 collaborators and 78 followers (anyone is welcome to
join). There are 11,969 profiles added to the project (the highest for any
project on Geni, according to

Re: New York marriage #general

Joseph Hirschfield

A misspelling in transcription plus carelessness were the causes of the difficulty
I had with finding a marriage license for my Hirschfield grandparents in NYC. My
grandfather's name Hirszfeld was transcribed for indexing as "Dirszfeld." Using
a "wild card" may be therefore be helpful in an internet search. The "sz" usage
was part of the Polish spelling.

Also, the certificate had his first name as "Sam" instead of the correct name
"Jacob." Jacob may have been embarrassed since the name Jacob he used in America
was his father's name (still alive in Europe).

I verified this was really my grandparent's certificate and not a real "Sam
Dirszfeld" through observing that the bride's name on the certificate was my
grandmother's.

wildcards. Still no results. What I have come to believe is one of a few possible
solutions 1) the spelling or handwriting is so bad on the forms that they simply
lost forever in the files

Questions about a JOWBR entry for a cousin - Michael ORLOW #germany

Lin <lin2@...>

Michael ORLOW, my mom's first cousin's father had this entry in the
JOWBR . I don't understand. I don't understand why he would be in a
cemetery, since he was murdered by the Nazis. ?? I didn't know that any
of those lost were buried- and that there would be burial notes and all.
All of his family who lived were out of Germany by that time. I believe
he and his wife were divorced. My grandfather gave him money to try to
get to Vienna either before he left or he sent it to him >from America.
My mom was a kid so she doesn't know the details. the only other
members of our family who were lost in the Shoah who have headstones are
memorials made at the site where there children were buried decades
later. Can someone explain? Thank you so much.

[USA] Proclamation on Jewish American Heritage Month, National Archives Program #general

If you find yourselves in the Washington DC area you might find the
following two National Archives items of interest:

The National Archives (USA) is commemorating Jewish American Heritage Month
with a program with Gerda Weissman Klein--Presidential Medal of Freedom
recipient, and Holocaust survivor. The program is scheduled for Thursday
May 9 at 7:00 PM at the William G. McGowan Theater of the National Archives

An upcoming exhibit at the National Archives has been announced that may be
of interest: Discovery and Recovery: Preserving Iraqi Jewish Heritage
October 11, 2013 - January 5, 2014.
In 2003, Coalition forces in Iraq discovered a cache of water-soaked books
and documents in the basement of Saddam Hussein's intelligence headquarters
in Baghdad-including thousands of documents and books relating to the
Jewish community. The US National Archives were asked for advise on how to
rescue this important historical cache of materials and have been involved
with their preservation. The exhibit relates the story of these materials
and how they are being made available worldwide. The exhibit will include
24 of the original documents and books. The exhibit will include an
audio-visual presentation on the preservation of the materials. The exhibit
is free and open to the public. To read more about this forthcoming exhibit
