franstier@...

Does anyone know about a memorial erected July 4th 2012 to the
Jews of Rostoky, killed on July 5th 1941, or how to contact
the group (probably in Israel) that erected the memorial?

My father's father, Jacob STIER, son of Menashe Israel STIER,
came >from Rostoky. We visited there this August, and saw the memorial.

Hi all, hope you can help! My friend's ggf Elias KATZ's ww1 reg card
names his hometown as something that looks like "Olskanarya," Hungary.
The type is faint and the handwriting's not perfect.

I've searched but can't find this town or something similar. We know
that the area he was >from changed to Romania after WW1, if that helps.

Anyone have a clue what the name of this town is? Thank you!

Hello Friends -

In searching the Yad Vashem records for my BOROS (nee WEINBERGER Flora) relative, I'm came across pages
of testimony submitted by Laszlo Lefkovits of Toronto, in 2004.  If he or any of his family is part of our
H-SIG community, please contact me privately, off-list, so that we can exchange information.

On another note, I was able to discover a "long-lost" first cousin of my grandmother's............... 91 and
living in Budapest!  This has been a real gift to us.  JewishGen is a fantastic resource, so in recognition of the
gold-mine it has been, I have made a new donation - and I would respectfully ask that everyone else try to
do the same.  Sometimes it is the tiniest reference or clue that opens the doors...

Many thanks to all of you who have made a difference in the research of others, whether financially, or by
volunteering, or by responding to queries of others.

The beginning of a JRI-Poland success story #poland

Israel P

So I said to Baruch, a fellow in his mid-sixties in the shul I've been
going to lately "What was your surname originally?" and he said
"Graniwitter." And I said "Where from?" and he said "a small town in
Galicia."

And I said "Where?" and he said "Roz- Roz-something" and I said "Rozdol?"
and he said "You've heard of it?

Well, actually yes, I have even been there. The Pikholz families come >from
two towns in east Galicia and Rozdol is where the other ones are from. I do
the genealogies of both.

His father's name is Israel ben Nachman, but Baruch does not know when
he was born.

Baruch's mother, on the other hand, died when he was not yet twelve and
he doesn't remember her surname. She was Golda bat Zvi Aryeh and she
was born in Stryj in 1902.

So that evening, I go into the JRI-Poland database. I do not find Israel
Graniwitter, but I find several Nachman Sisze Graniwitters including one
born 1878 in Rozdol. Graniwitter was the mother's name.

Then I searched for all the listings in the Stryj area after 1895 for Golda
bat Hersch Leib. There was one, in 1903. The parents' names are Messinger
and Mehler.

I ordered both records and gave them to Baruch after shul. Golda's mother
is Hencie and he confirmed that this must be his mother because he has a
sister Hencie who is known to named for the grandmother.

I will see what else is available on Baruch's family and order some
additional records >from the AGAD archives.

This already qualifies as a success story, but when I have more, I hope to
lay it out on my weekly genealogy blog at
http://allmyforeparents.blogspot.com - perhaps about four months >from now.
