The names I search have been posted, edited and upgraded for years on JG Family Finder and Family Tree of the Jewish People, with only 2 solid responses - for which I am forever grateful - * a Chicago cousin who now lives in Israel, and a ** Northern California cousin-by-marriage. So, I thought I would take a chance and possibly spread my search out a little wider, using this format, and see what happens.

Berkowitz is a patronymic name ie son of Berko.My great grand aunt Rebecca Plotnovsky of Raczki in Suwalki Gubernia married Solomon Berkowitz Karobelnik of Suwalki Gubernia in Hull, UK in 1889. I'm not sure about Samuel, but to paraphrase Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady, "I can tell that his father was NOT born Hungarian!" According to his Petition for Naturalization Samuel's father, Benjamin or Baruch MUHLBAUER, was born in 1871 in Kosow -- a town then in Galicia, a crown land of the Austrian Empire. It's now in Ukraine (https://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/community.php?usbgn=-1043044). Immigrants from Kosow founded the Progressive Kossower Benevolent Society, on whose grounds at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Queens, New York, Benjamin and his wife Mollie are buried. (See http://www.mountcarmelcemetery.com/search.asp?type=interment .) Benjamin arrived in the U.S. (his second time coming over) in Nov. 1913, traveling as Burech MUHLBAUER. With him was his 15-year-old son Schlome -- presumably your grandfather Sam. Benjamin's NYC death record (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2W5G-BD5) says that he died in Manhattan at age 71 and that his parents were Mandel MUHLBAUER and Chaie MILSTEIN. There's a good chance that he was the "Itzig Burch MUHLBAUER," born 1871 in Kosow, whose birth record is indexed on JRI-Poland.org . On the other hand, Benjamin's wife may have been born in Hungary. A U.S. passport application filed in 1924 by "Molie" MUHLBAUER, wife of Baruch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-99DQ-RB4X?i=470&cc=2185145) says that she was born in "Bystra, Hungary -- now Poland" (an unlikely change of borders) and that they were married there. BUT, Mollie's arrival record -- July 1914, with daughter Chaje, 7, later Ida (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9TX-32XF?i=50&cc=1368704&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AJJQ5-5ZW) lists last residence and birth place of both as Kosow. As for Samuel's birth place, records vary. His arrival record says that he was born in Kosow, his WWII draft card says "Bistrow," Hungary, the 1915 census says Austria, and the 1940 census says New York! Start with finding your families in the Census and other US records, such as naturalization, immigration etc. You can do this using Ancestry.com ($), MyHeritage.com($) or FamilySearch.org (free). Start making a family tree in genealogy software. LegacyFamilyTree.com has a free basic version of its Legacy software - and a great user group on FB. MyHeritage has a FamilyTree Builder which syncs with a tree on their site (however once you go over 250 people there is an annual fee). RootsMagic has a free version as well. My personal preference is Legacy although it is not as Jewish friendly as the other two, but it has more options. Both MyHeritage and RootsMagic also have FB user groups, but they are not as active as the Legacy group, which almost always has employees monitoring the group and beta testers. Once you have gotten your US roots for your family - include aunts/uncles cousins/grandparents etc - go wide, you don't know whose naturalization will lead to the passenger record and the appropriate location in the "old country"; then you can head to Jewishgen databases.

Is anyone familiar with the name Jur (or Jure or Jura)?
Is this a Polish named that was used in Galicia, or perhaps it had a Jewish origin? In particular I am wondering if it was a form of Yair (יאיר) or perhaps it was short for Yeruchim (ירוחם) as in Yeruchim Fishel? Any insights or experience with this would be appreciated. Thank you. Women got the right to vote in the United States with the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920. Knowing where your grandmother lived at that time will help narrow the focus of your search.

Elias Leib SWITKES, born 15 December 1880 In Czernowitz, then Rumania married to: Emilia KATZ, born 11 March 1882 in Lviv Both living in Leibzig, both were deported and murdered in the Holocaust There was a sizeable Switkes family in Czernowitz. Did Samuel have a brother named Max from Kossow, Austria? I found naturalization papers. Also 1920 Census.
Also parents named Benjamin & Bella also from Kossow. Schlome Mahlbauer 15 & father Burech Mahlbauer 42 arrived 12 Nov 1913 on ship Prince Friedrich Wilhelm from Kossow, Galicia. If this sounds right, email me and I will send images.

Can any of you tell by just reading this record if the father mentioned on Osher Mishalov's record, Yakov Mishalov Paderiver, is the same man listed on the next record as Yakov-Zev-Wolf Mieshelov? Is Zev-Wolf part of his name or does it mean something else? It has been determined that the name Paderiver could be derived fro the name of a small community near Slutsk. If they are the same man, could the third record for A. Lipman Lifshits Mishalov also be his son and a brother to Osher?
