Appeal for information on the Great Synagogue in Brno #austria-czech

gluckpast@...

Thanks in part to those who very kindly responded with suggestions
(and partly to one of those accidental discoveries for which we are
all thankful >from time to time), I have now firmly established that
the Great Synagogue in Brno that was burned and demolished in March
1939 was situated at the junction of Spalena and Prizova streets. What
is more, as can clearly be seen on Google Street View, the site
remains derelict and unoccupied and, quite possibly, has done so since
1939.

As an added bonus, I've also now located a really good image of the
synagogue, with an surviving building in Prizova Street visible in the
background as a point of reference. All in all, an excellent result!

Feldmann family and the Cafe Raimundhof, Vienna #general

Naomi Leon <naomi.leon@...>

Dear Genners

I am currently researching a businessman named Adolf FELDMANN >from Vienna. He was
born in 1881, the son of Alexander Feldmann and Johanna nee Kohn. He had a least
two elder sisters Gisela (1875) and Pauline 1879), and a brother Moriz Feldmann.
Adolf and Moriz married sisters by the name of NOVAK, >from Napajedla, South
Moravia.

I know that Adolf and his parents died before WW2, but I would like to find out
more about life. He is meant to have won the Iron Cross during the First World War
and I would like to find out more about this.

Later, he was a successful businessman. Lehmann's directory shows ge lived at
Reinprechtsdorfer Str 33. (Margareten) for at least 18 years between 1920-1938 and
he is thought to have run a variety of businesses, including butchers shops and a
coffee house, 'Cafe Raimundhof' on Raimund Platz, opposite Raimund Theatre.

I'd be grateful for any guidance as to how best to research his military career,
and find out more about Cafe Raimundhof. Please also get in touch if these names
mean anything to you.

Many thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

PUSLOWSKI Polish Noble Family #general

Jim Bennett

The PUSLOWSKI family were Polish nobles who owned vast estates and properties in
Poland and Belarus before WW I.

Among them was the village of Boryshin in what is now Western Belarus.

My wife's ancestors were the only Jewish family in Boryshin in 1785-1830, leading
us to believe that they operated the inn, mill, or other facilities on behalf of
the absentee Puslowski owners, a common situation in those days.

I'm searching for the Puslowski archives and knowledgeable members of that family.

Suggestions please.....

Re: 1930 Census re Inmates #general

In his answer re the use of "inmate" in the 1930 Census, Alan Jordan wrote:
" People in public institutions are frequently listed as "inmates" on the census
but it does not mean under lock and key confinement the way we think today.
People in hospitals were listed as "inmates" and not just mental institutions.
(I have not looked at orphanages but I would not be surprised to see the word
used there too.)"

My experience in looking at Orphanages in the Census, for any year, in Cleveland,
Ohio did indeed list the children of any age ( even infants) as "inmates".

New York Court of Appeals Starts Online Publicly Searchable Database #general

Jan Meisels Allen

The New York Court of Appeals launched on February 1, 2013 their enhanced
on-line system called: The Court of Appeals Public Access and Search System
(Court-PASS). It will provide a new method for the filing of records and
briefs in digital format on appeals to the Court of Appeals and universal
online access to these documents through a publicly-searchable database for
cases filed or decided on or after January 1, 2013. Court cases may be of
assistance in your genealogy research-albeit the system starts with 2013.
You may search or browse the Court-PASS database free of charge, and may
view or download documents >from every stage of the case at the Court of
Appeals, including motion papers for civil motions in which leave to appeal
has been granted by the Court of Appeals, and briefs and records in civil
and criminal appeals. They recognize that sensitive information such as
Social Security numbers, financial account numbers etc. may be included in
the papers and charge the attorneys to meet their responsibilities about
confidentiality and sensitive issues. Cases that are closed by the court
will not be included in the Court-Pass system. The browse function allows
users to view a list of all pending and decided cases in the databases
sorted alphabetically by case name. The search function retrieves pending
and decided cases by party name, argument date and decision date, authoring
Judge, appeal number, subject matter classification or citation or any
combination of these criteria.

Rabbi DAGUTSKY - Manchester & New Orthodox Synagogue, Ferreirasdorp, Johannesburg #southafrica

Scooby Doo

Dear Fellow Researchers,

My Great-great grandfather, Rabbi Manechem Ber DAGUTSKY, was the first Rabbi of the Holy Law Synagogue in Manchester,UK as well as a founding member of the Manchester Yeshiva.
Rabbi Dagutsky arrived in the UK between February 1880 & October 1885.
I have found no UK Naturalization papers for him so was unable to find out in which town in Lithuania he was born.
The various UK censuses don't mention the town.

I have just managed to obtain documents >from the South African archives relating to his 1896 application to be a Rabbi in South Africa for at least 1 year.
Although Rabbi Dagutsky spent most of his life in the UK I never expected to find out more information about him >from a document in the South African Archives.
One of the most important finds in these documents was finally learning just where he was was born: Tavrig, Lithuania.

The South African documents state he was going to take up the position of Rabbi at the "New Orthodox Synagogue in Ferreirasdorp, Johannesburg, South Africa"
One of the reasons for this posting is to enquire if anyone has any information about this Synagogue, any photographs/sketches of the Synagogue or any other information relating to Rabbi Dagutsky's time in Office there?

Many thanks
