Re: Church tax in 19th-century German states - Clarification #germany

Eva Lawrence

Apologies, I should have been clearer. The Church tax was paid not only
by Jews, but by all religions in German states. It is still collected in
parts of modern Germany, as a local tax, as I found when investigating
the subject, and a topic of debate in German newspapers, and among Turkish
(presumably Moslem) Gastarbeiter. Before German unification, it was paid
to the local Duke , Kurfuerst or King of the particular state, who in
theory administrated the religious community, as described in the Wikipedia
article. I can't comment on what use he made of the money!

Eva Lawrence St Albans UK eva.lawrence@idnet.com

Ernest Kallman, a French genealogist, has drawn my attention to the fact
that it was not only Jews in 19th-Century German states who paid for the
privilege of pursuing their religion=E2=80=99. Apparently the :Church tax:
was universal. A full explanation can be found at the following link:

Hi

Re Czech Registers - high quality files.

I'm not sure if anyone has responded to Simon Torrington's discovery, but a
huge public thank you to him for saving me many hours of zooming, snipping
and stitching in order to obtain clear, large-scale images. Given that I do
automatically add towns and page numbers to a Czech Registers spreadsheet,
it really couldn't be simpler.

Incidentally, I did try it on other browsers, too, with the same success.

Thanks Simon - this is certainly going to aid, as well as speed up, Czech
Registers research for fellow members.

Thanks again for the Kudos, Barbara. But I want to let you and the
other GerSig members know that the film is available for private
screenings, but for the time being, only private ones,
not open to the public.

Kudos to GerSIG member Peter Vanlaw for presenting his movie at the
JGSLA meeting on Monday night, September 10th. It told the history
of his German Jewish parents (formerly WEINLAUB) who hid their Jewish
background >from the world (and >from him) for over 50 years.
The documentary was about how he learned of their secret and
researched their history only after he found a suitcase of
pictures and numerous yellow square boxes of 16 mm film. It
was very well done........ It is called "For the Life of Me"
*** I don't think that it will be generally available for
viewing ... yet but I am sure that Peter will let us know when it is.

This is more or less a follow-up to a previous message that I sent.

I am interested in knowing who amongst our group is actively researching -
identifying vital records of interest etc.

I am an also interested in knowing if anyone has suggestions for
updating/upgrading the Ciechanow Shtetl Page
(www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/ciechanow). Nothing has been added in quite
some time. I need some suggestions. Is there anyone who is interested in
taking an active role in this project?

Has anyone had some recent breakthroughs that they would like to share?

Does anyone need advice/guidance on how to research their roots?

Has anyone been to Ciechanow recently and want to let us know about their
experience there. Anyone planning to travel there soon? Who wants to go?

I would like to hear >from you!
