A great discovery, egg on my face, and thanks for help
Dear cousins,
Over the years so many of you have helped me in my quest to find out
what happened to my grandmother's long-lost brother, Wolf Pfeiffer,
rejected at Ellis Island in 1906 due to spinal curvature. Among many
others, David and Susan Rosen, Alan Jordan, Dennis Gries, and Yehudah
ben Shlomo, who found so much stuff on collateral relatives that I
dropped out of choral society for a cycle to process it all. Whoever I
forgot to mention - please let me know!
We were working on the "family legend" that said that he had somehow
re-entered the country and lived out his life here. At least when I
was working with folks I did make it clear that it was "family
legend."
Because when I got sick of scouring census and immigration records I
started researching my mother's "distant" cousins. I found out that
they were not so "distant." Some were first cousins and one of them
was the son of said Wolf. I am now in touch with Wolf's granddaughter
in Israel (special thanks to Israel Picholz for helping to track her
down), and we are learning so much about what happened. Long story
short, he returned to Zurawno, became a fruit peddler, and died in his
sleep in 1922.
So. Egg on my face for barking up the wrong family legend all those years.
Time-worn, hackneyed moral of the story: work from what you know with
a capital K.

Dear Everyone,
My sincere gratitude to everyone that continues to help reunite families that were displaced during the Holocaust. Being the 75th anniversary of the Auschwitz liberation, it stands as a reminder to those who made the ultimate sacrifice and those that survived at a time when I’m sure they thought all Hope was lost. Here in America, there should be more reminders and remembrance days for the survivors of the Holocaust and especially for those that were lost. So many beautiful, brilliant, and kind people were killed for no reason...no reason at all. I have a personal connection with the Holocaust because my Great-Aunt was a Holocaust survivor from Poland. I had the privilege and honor of knowing her when I was a teenager. My Great-Uncle was a US Army Lieutenant and met her when they liberated the camp in 1945. They were married in Germany and he sent her home to America, later following her when his Military Orders were completed in Europe. I only knew her for a short time before she passed away, but I’ve never met anyone like her since then. She was a beautiful woman inside and out and cherished life. Her memory lives on in me and everyone who knew her. Lastly, the one thing she told me was this: “Don’t ever let anyone tell you the Holocaust did not happen. It was real and should never be forgotten or allowed to be repeated in History.” Blessings to all who perished during this time and much love to those who survived. Humanity will overcome hatred everyday. Live for those who were gone too soon and for those that continue to survive today. Thank you to everyone for your determination to keep what happened during the Holocaust alive today. In my humble opinion, I believe it is the least we can do for all those that were lost. Never Forget the past and teach the younger generation about what happened.

I am researching the possibility that we are descendants of Reb. Chaim
of Volozhin. I haven't found a definite line as yet but have a few
hints to possible connections.
My great great grandmother Sarah Hinde (the supposed descendant) was
married to Shlomo KANTOR of Karlin (Pinsk). According to a family
story, they or her parents were taken to their wedding by Reb. Itzaleh
, Reb. Chaim's son as she was orphaned at the time of her marriage.:
According to published biographies of the "Volozhin family" , Reb.
Itzaleh did bury his daughter and son-in-law (LANDAU) . I haven't
found any mention of my ancestress in published biographies. Could the
LANDAU's have had other daughters which were not mentioned?
Another track: Reb. Chaim of Volozhin had another son, Joseph, who
seems to have been "purged" by family biographers who married a woman
from Shershev, and whose son became a Chassid (possible reason for
Joseph's disappearance from the charts.) Does anyone have a detailed
list of Joseph's descendants?
Among better known children of Sarah Hinde KANTOR was Chaim Dov KANTOR
an religious Israeli pioneer who lived in Zichron Yaacov and (nearby)
Shfeya.

Re: what does this mean? hotel guest
Much like today rooms would be rented by the week, there were many residential hotels in the past. Think of the Madeline books with her living at the Plaza Hotel only probably a more downscale. The hotel supplied cleaning service, linens, towels and you paid a set rate. Room service for food was also available.

speaker is Adv. Jonathan Kirsch who will speak on “The Administrator General
of Israel-Tracing Unclaimed Property Owners and Their Heirs

Fulfilling traditional Jewish values, the Office of the
Administrator General of Israel works to locate the owners of unclaimed assets
in Israel or their heirs and has been able to increase its activities of late
due to developments in genealogy and the proliferation of resources.
Jonathan
Kirsch, senior member of the office, will describe the process by which each
year, through genealogical research utilizing tools and resources such as
archives, websites, social media, databases, records and newspapers, his
department is able to reunite hundreds of people with their ancestral property
and with each other. Jonathan will bring fascinating examples of how various
items provided key clues enabling identification of property owners, piecing
together their family trees and ultimately tracking down their heirs.
Jonathan
Kirsch is a qualified lawyer originally from the UK. He directs the Department
for the Location of Property Owners and Transfer of Unclaimed Assets to the
State in the Office of the Administrator General of Israel whose international
investigations trace the rights to property and their heirs. Jonathan made
aliya to Israel in 1990 and currently lives in Bet Shemesh.

Holocaust Remembrance Day - The Words THAT Matter!
Words can make a difference – both for good and evil. ORT students have been using the defiantly optimistic words of Vilna poet Hirsh Glik to inspire themselves and others as part of our ongoing campaign to bring Zog nit Keynmol to new generations. This video shows just a few highlights of their stunning recitals of Glik’s lyrics to the song, which is renowned as the anthem of the Jewish partisans.

Maryusya Zarembo, student at ORT de Gunzburg School #550 in St Petersburg, Russia, is in awe of Hirsh Glik’s defiantly optimistic lyrics to Zog Nit Keynmol, the anthem of the Jewish partisans.
“This is the first time I’ve read or heard the poetry of someone from that time. It’s hard for me to imagine how he could have found the time or energy to be creative in those circumstances, but he did. And his verses are very powerful and life-affirming,” Maryusya said.
Learning the lyrics, Maryusya said, had made her think about the Holocaust and its lessons for humanity.
“We have to learn that a person must not be humiliated or destroyed because of their ethnicity, faith or politics,” she said. “We can’t expect everyone to be a saint but the more we protect each other, the more tolerant we are, the stronger humanity will become. The alternative is extinction.”

Looking for further research suggestions - early 1800's Poland

I am looking for advice on further research suggestions to document the relationship between two individuals who died in 1823 in Tomaszow Lubelski, Poland.
My 5th Great-Grandfather, Szloma PUTTER, died on 30 May 1823 at age 89 (estimated birth year = 1734) in Tomaszow Lubelski, Poland. His occupation was innkeeper. He was married to Laja WAYC, daughter of Peysach WAYC and Rajzla; she died 2 May 1833 in Tomaszow Lubelski at age 84 (estimated birth year = 1749). They had three known sons – Berko Leyba (born about 1774), Josef Majer (born about 1775) and Abus (born about 1780). No parents are listed on Szloma PUTTER’s death record but sons Josef Majer and Abus are identified as sons of the deceased and listed as witnesses in the death record. After their father’s death, all three sons named their next male children Szloma in memory of their father.
Cyna (= Sinai) PUTER died on 25 Mar 1823 in Tomaszow Lubelski, Poland at age 73 (estimated birth year = 1750). His occupation was innkeeper. He was married to Chaja, daughter of Szulim; she died 6 Aug 1829 in Tomaszow Lubelski at age 72 (estimated birth year = 1757). They had at least two children – Pinkwas (born about 1789) and Ruchla HALTMAN (born PUTER about 1798). No parents are listed on Cyna PUTER’s death record but son Pinkwas PUTER and son-in-law Mortko Wolf HALTMAN are identified as such and as witnesses in the death record. Pinkwas named his son Senel [= Netaniel]; Senel PUTER took the name Cyna over time. Morko Wolf HALTMAN and Ruchla HALTMAN (born PUTER) initially named their son, who was born 9 Jun 1822, Chaim PUTER. Chaim PUTER’s 1862 marriage record gives his name as Chaim Syna PUTER. Presumably, Chaim’s parents added the middle name Syna after Ruchla’s father Cyna died in 1823.
Abus PUTER, son of Szloma PUTTER, named his son Cyna; this child was born on 30 Apr 1823 in Tomaszow Lubelski, Poland, just one month after the 25 Mar 1823 death of the elder Cyna PUTER (c.1750-1823). Abus PUTTER’s own father, Szloma, died a month after this new son was born and named (Szloma died 30 May 1823). Abus PUTER named his next son Szloma (born 27 Jan 1826) in memory of his father. That Abus PUTER named his son Cyna so close to the elder Cyna’s death suggests a close relationship between the Szloma PUTTER and Cyna PUTER families.
I submitted a 67-marker Y-DNA sample of a documented PUTTER descendant of Cyna PUTER (c.1750-1823) to FamilyTreeDNA.com in 2016. The results indicated the descendant and I were within a Genetic Distance of 3. This test suggests that there is a 51% probability that we had a Most Recent Common Ancestor within 9 generations and an 85% probability that we had a Most Recent Common Ancestor within the 12 generations. We have to date documented 8 generations in each family line.
I engaged a genealogist/archivist in Lublin to examine notarial records in Tomaszow Lubelski around the time of the deaths in 1823 of Szloma PUTTER and Cyna PUTER. He found two records in 1814 and 1816 regarding Szloma PUTTER and his son Josef Majer. Neither of these records refer to older generations. He also found no records regarding Cyna PUTER.
I would be grateful for any suggestions about how to proceed in researching exactly how the Szloma PUTTER and Cyna PUTER families might be related.

Operation Todt - Saint Maur, France [ Richard KAHN]
I have learned of a death in August 1944 of a Richard KAHN in Saint
Maur, France, while on forced labour with the aptly named "Operation Todt".
Ironically this "half Jew" was buried as a German soldier.
Does anyone here know what specifically was being done in Saint Maur
by this aptly named organisation?

You can do a google search for the El Cortez, San Diego and find
a wealth of information on line.
In addition to hotel rooms an apartment hotel has suites for rent
at a monthly or longer rate.
In 1928, El Cortez had 85 apartment suites, available to rent for
$100 per month, and 32 hotel rooms for $5 per day.

I know that there’s been a problem over the years of vandals stealing the photos off of tombstones at Waldheim Cemetery. The cemetery is not in the best neighborhood and the vandals steal the photos for the metal frame, which I believe is brass or some other metal that’s worth a little money.

Re: Familysearch.org - is there a list of online record updates?
Sorry if my post was ambiguous - by "supplemented" I was referring to additional records added to an existing record set, not edits to existing records (although I appreciate learning about the latter). Thanks to Barbara Ellman for the link that I needed. Using the news search option, I searched for any updates to Lithuania records in the last 10 years. The search came up empty. I'm puzzled how that can be, as I know for a fact that Lithuania records have been added within that period. Anyone have any ideas how I can find the Lithuania updates?
