Why So Few Vital records from Buchach, Ukraine?

(The books cover a span of years--most of which are less than those 100 years--so the earlier years in these books are still inaccessible to researchers.) Yes, you can visit or write to the USC offices to ask them to do a search, but they prefer that you are specific about exact names, events and dates, versus making a global search covering 50 years for a particular surname. Still--it can't hurt to contact them. They will provide written extracts, not copies of the pages of registry in the books. Another source of information, available now and freely online, is the new All Galicia Database: http://www.search.geshergalicia.org This search engine was officially launched by Gesher Galicia, the special interest group for those with Jewish roots in the former Austrian province, in July 2011. It features 192,268 records >from 60 different data sources, covering everything >from birth, death, marriage and divorce records to phone books, school and landowner records. Although Gesher Galicia's focus is researching Jewish roots in this region, the diverse community sources of information in this database also contain names that span all the ethnic and religious groups who lived in the area, so not everyone listed in this database will necessarily be Jewish. We have 951 records for Bucacz >from the 1879 Landowner Record Book. You can search by surname (using Beider-Morse Soundex) and will learn the house number, district and property area. (Click on the + sign to drop down additional information.) The description of this book is: Inventory of landowners of Buchach (Wyciag z obliczenia pomiaru i oszacowania.) Tax record sheets include name, house number, place of residence, list of land parcels in land parcel number order showing parcel numbers, type & class of land, land parcel area, & value for taxation. Tax record nos. 1-989 in 5 books include the city of Buczacz & suburbs I to IV. Gesher Galicia also has digital images of these books--containing more information than the indexes--and an additional book >from 1880, not yet indexed. The data is freely searchable, but the images are available only to project contributors. If you check Gesher Galicia's Cadastral Map & Landowner Records Project Inventory: http://www.jewishgen.org/galicia/cadastral_maps_and_landowners_project/records.php You'll see that there are several more records for Bucacz held in the Lviv Historical Archive--some of which have been examined and reported on--others which have not yet been looked at, but which may contain your family names. Although not as much information is learned >from property records as vital records, they do serve to place a specific family in a specific town in a specific year, and many people have made breakthroughs in their research using these records. Gesher Galicia has also scanned many cadastral maps as companion pieces to these landowner records, where one can find, in some cases, the names of the property owners written on the maps. Look for our launching of the "Gesher Galicia Map Room" to take place in a few months, where these maps will be freely accessible online. I suggest you search in the AGD for your Bucacz surnames, and if you have success in finding them there, please let us know! When doing genealogical research, and vital records are sparse or missing, it's important to think outside the box and examine other types of records which can help fill certain years. Gesher Galicia is now expanding its research to include school records, voter records (woman were voting in Galicia before they were allowed to vote in the United States!), tabular (notary and inheritance) records, Polish magnate landowner records (where information about Jewish residents often appeared), Austrian government records and more. Helene Bergman <helenebergman@...>
Going through family papers, I found an official certificate of
literacy for my grandmother, dated 1952. By that date, my grandmother had been in the US since 1937 and was already a citizen. Can anyone enlighten me as to why a 52 year old naturalized US citizen would have obtained such certification? Thanks in advance Lanie Bergman Bronx NY

Help Transcribing & Translating Small Snip of Wilhelm Mayer's 1850 k. k. Marine Fitness Report

I seek help with the transcription/translation of a small part of an
1850 Austrian Navy document. With Traude Triebel's kind help, I obtained Wilhelm Mayer's k. k. Marine 1850 and 1851 annual fitness reports. I have transcribed and translated all but one small part (underlined in red on the image posted at the URL below) involving the warship Vulcan that he served on in 1850. I think this small bit is the name or type of war vessel the Vulcan was (like a larger ship as opposed to the small corvette Leipzig he first served on): http://castellan.us/HEIRLOOMS/MayerWilhelmKKMarine1850ServiceOnWarShips.jpg Here's what I have so far: Hat Campagnen und andere Seereisengemacht [Campaigns and other voyages made] Vom 6 Juli 1850 bis 2ten Septbr 1850 auf der Corv[ette] Leipzig Vom 3 Septbr 1850 bis 5te October auf dem Kriegs ?? Vulcan, nie geschifft [From6 July 1850 to 2nd September 1850 on the Corv[vette] Leipzig from 3 September 1850 to 5th October on the war ?? Vilna gubernia VRT records - Snipiskes (Snipishok), Antakalnis (Antokol), Vilna, and Trakai district towns
#lithuania
Joel Ratner
The LitvakSIG Vital Records Translation Project is seeking to raise
the funds necessary to translate vital records for Snipiskes (Snipishok) and Antakalnis (Antokol). Snipishok and Antokol were immediate suburbs of Vilna and today they are incorporated into Vilna proper. Various records have been translated which indicate surnames which are to be found in these towns. Excel index files have been prepared which list the surnames found within these records and are therefore indicators of what else might be found in the yet untranslated vital records. The Excel file of almost 800 surnames will be made available to Snipishok researchers who respond to this message privately. A second file has been prepared for Antokol and will be made available under the same terms. Vilna city vital records status ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Translation of birth and marriage records for the city of Vilna have progressed to now include some early 20th Century records. Death and divorce records for the 19th Century are still a work in progress. We have all four types of records through 1915 and these require funding in order to enable the translation work to proceed. Vilna city has close to 180,000 records which is a significant undertaking. Vilna researchers, especially those who have not yet participated in the VRT project and who are able to do so, are hereby asked to help fund this work with whatever you may be able to contribute. Trakai and Lida district vital records ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Remaining untranslated vital records exist for the towns of Daugai, Novy Dvor, Orlya, Shchuchin, Trakai, and Varena. Funding is required to move these translations along. Researchers wishing to contribute to the LitvakSIG Vital Records Translation Project may do so at the LitvakSIG web site at http://litvaksig.org/contribute . Select the Vital Records Project and indicate your shtetl of interest. A qualifying contribution of $100 (Vilna city $150) entitles one to Excel files containing translations of the vital records for a single town. Due to the lack of sufficient numbers of donors for certain towns or the wealth of records, it sometimes becomes necessary to ask for a little extra gelt now and then.
