Re: Brooklyn walking tour #general

Phyllis Kramer

Suanne Levin Ray is returning to her roots in NYC and asked:
"Any recommendations for a tour planner or guide?
Is there some way to get pictures of their apartment buildings or homes?
Is it possible to find out which synagogue they attended? Any further
suggestions would be most appreciated."

First, Suanne, you can order 1940 photos of NYC locations or view the
microfilms at the municipal archives, 31 Chambers st. Go to
http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/taxphotos/home.shtml
which has the history and how to order the photos.

For synagoges, the list in those early days is endless, but I would
recommend first getting mapquest maps of the locations, then looking
through the 1918 communal register on Google Books as it contains
information on all congregations and organizations of the period and a
lot more. It's a huge URL, but if you Google "Jewish Communal Register"
and go to the result which includes "books.google.com", you can view or
download it.

Enjoy New York ... We are a friendly city! Take the subway or the water
taxi to Brooklyn.

Dear Geners

My grandfather Joseph Aaron FREIMAN (d. 1966) in 1940s organized events
and newsletters (I have copies) to keep his relatives in touch with one
another. I discovered his typed mailing lists. Clearly every name on the
list is a relative. (some may be a relative of someone who married into the
family- but were close enough to be included in the gatherings).

Many of the names I have been able to figure out the connection...below,
though, are names that I have yet to determine their connection. I include
the name and address in the 1940s

Hello,

I was wondering if there are any written sources about the descendants
of R' Jakob WEIL (1385-1456)' second son, Rabbi Yosef Yosel who was
married to the daughter of R' Israel BRUNN.
I also wondred if there was a third son named Yehuda and if something is
known about descendants.

Thanks for your reply.
