Peculiar burial question, Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Queens #general

David W. Perle

Hi, all.
I have been a bit perplexed about something ever since visiting a pair of
great-great-great-grandparents' graves for the first time at Mount Carmel
Cemetery in Queens, NY: The rows in their section are so close to each
other! Meaning, it's no more than about 5 feet in between rows of head
stones. There's no way that all of those people were so short, so I'm a
bit perplexed about how they were all buried. This section happens to be
on a hill (sloping downward as you face the fronts of the stones), so I
wonder if the caskets are perhaps parallel to the slope, which would give
a bit more length? (But that seems especially awkward since it's sloping
downward to the back.) Thoughts?

Roadblock searching Barasch family from Iasi #romania

Jeffrey Barasch <jpbarasch@...>

I've been stuck at a roadblock for 25+ years.

My grandfather, Philip Barasch, born about 1885, came >from Iasi to NYC
in 1907 (followed by several siblings and his mother, Rifca).
His father, Rachmeil Barasch (my G-GF) died in Iasi in 1901. He was a baker.
I went to Iasi myself and found the death certificate and burial
record for Rachmeil, but there was no further info on his family and I
could not find his grave in the Iasi cemetery (may have been one of
the graves in which the writing wore off).
I was also unable to find the marriage record or birth records for my
great-grandparents, Rachmeil and Rifca, in the Iasi civil archives
(nor for my own GF, Philip). I did find a few of his younger
siblings birth records, born to Rachmeil and Rifca Barasch around
1890.
So I'm stuck as I can't find Rachmeil's parents or any of his siblings.
I'm thinking that maybe they came >from another town before settling in
Iasi, but have no clue where. So I can't get any further tracing my
family.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Help reading handwritten birth record #galicia

Sabrina Bonus <sabrina.bonus@...>

Dear all,

Can someone please help to decipher this handwritten page of birth
records from, I hope, Horodenka? A link to the item on FamilySearch is
below. I am interested in what is written sideways on the left, and how
it relates to anything else on the page, if at all. I think the people on the
left are mine.

WEISSMAN family from Kolomea (Austria) now Ukraine #general

Rod MacNeil

Everyone: My great-grandmother, Marjem Chaje WEISSMAN, was born in Kolomea,
Austria in 1878. She had a large family with my great-grandfather, Osias
WEISSMAN; and lived in the nearby village of Czortowiec (now Chortovets,
Ukraine). Three of their young children, including my grandfather, came to
the United States prior to WWI. The remainder of this family did not immigrate
and were killed in the Holocaust.

Marjem Chaje's WEISSMAN siblings, Moses (Morris), Samuel, Rose and Zachary
David, and her mother (Pessie KERKER) also immigrated to New York in the first
decade of the 20th century. All are buried in the Kolomear-2 Society in Mount
Zion Cemetery Queens.

I would like to make contact with any WEISSMAN decendents of my
great-grandmother's siblings. Please respond to my privately off the list.

Thanks,

Rod MacNeil
