Lviv birth records #galicia

Rivka Schirman <capitetes@...>

Just a thought: Later notations of death on a birth record might have
been needed in cases of later registration of a civilian second
marriage (to prove that the person legalizing a second marriage is,
indeed, legally widowed) or in case of marriage of a child of the
deceased when the widowed mother had remarried and the bride or
groom bears another surname than his mother. IMO and intuitively it
had something to do with the legal status - mainly with the surname
- of the children born during the religious marriage that was not
registered in the civil registry of marriage.

Both Mark Haleprn and Errol Schneegurt seem to have access to a
large number of vital records so could check whether the hypothesis
above might be a common factor.

Another common factor could be the particular administrative habits
in a given district or region during the passage >from Austrian
administration to Polish one, starting around the dates mentioned.

Just a thought.

these notations are about a subsequent civil marriage of the
subject's parents (Jews were married in religious ceremonies, but
most of these marriages were not registered with or recognized as
legal by the civil authorities). This notation changed the birth

I have been transcribing the Lviv Birth records...

There are occasional line items that include both the birth and
death information. The death information seems to have been
added to the record as an afterthought at some time after the birth.

There are years between the year of birth and death but the date of
record are the same. What puzzles me is that this information is
there for very few records and not for all records....

Dear Errol Schneegurt!

I have seen death records added to the birth records for the people
who had died long after the birth, not for a child-died.
I think, it might have been a formal rule - to add a death date into
the birth record (in addition to or instead of spec separate death
records) - which nevertheless was not strictly followed in reality.

DNA Research #DNA Help Grow JOWBR - Next Update #dna

Nolan Altman

The next update to JewishGen's JOWBR (JewishGen's Online Worldwide Burial
Registry) Database (http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/) will be in
June and will include all submissions made through May 31. Per JOWBR's
requirements, submissions should include complete cemeteries or cemetery
sections, not individual family burial information.

JOWBR currently contains over 1.7 million Jewish burial records >from 65
countries. The database grows through the efforts of our donors; Jewish
Genealogical Societies, individuals, historical societies, cemetery
administrators, synagogues and Chevra Kadishas. If you are aware of
cemetery records that are not currently in our database, we would appreciate
if you could help us obtain them and help grow the database.

If you're interested in making a submission, please see "Submitting Data to
JOWBR" at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/Submit.htm If you
prefer, you can also watch our online screencasts that show you how JOWBR
works and will also walk you through the completion of the standard
templates at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/Screencasts/

If you have any questions, please contact me at NAltman@JewishGen.org Thank
you in advance for your help!
