Announcement - Sub-Carpathia Portal and Research Group mail list #general

Marshall Katz

A Sub-Carpathia Research Group mail list has been created for researchers
with Jewish roots in villages and towns located in present-day Ukraine
but were formerly located in those parts of the pre-1918 Hungarian counties
of Bereg, Maramaros, Ugocsa and Ung, the 1918-1939 Czechoslovak territory
of Podkarpatska Rus' (Subcarpathia Russia) and the inter-war Hungarian
territory called Carpatho-Ukraine.

Please note that while, today, parts of Bereg are in Hungary/Ukraine,
parts of Maramaros are in Romania/Ukraine, parts of Ugocsa are in
Romania/Ukraine and parts of Ung are in Slovakia/Ukraine, this
discussion mail list is only concerned with those parts of these
four former Hungarian counties that are in present-day Ukraine.

For those parts of Bereg in Hungary/Romania today, Maramaros in Romania
today, Ugocsa in Romania today and Ung in Slovakia today, visit Hungary
SIG or Romania SIG, but you are welcome to sign-up for this list, too.

Additionally, to complement the Sub-Carpathia Research Group mail list, a
Sub-Carpathia Portal (web site) was created for the specific purpose of
gathering, presenting and preserving genealogical and historical information
about Jewish life in Sub-Carpathia in the former Hungarian counties of
Bereg, Maramaros, Ugocsa and Ung, as defined above. The web site portal is
always a work in-progress. Therefore, if you have content of interest to
all, to enrich the portal, please contact me via the e-mail link at the
portal.

To visit the Sub-Carpathia Portal (web site), go to:

The Brody Cemetery Project - 2nd call #ukraine

Ami Elyasaf

Dear Researchers:

Two months ago I posted an announcement on the new Brody cemetery project.

Thus far we raised less than half of the required budget >from only 16
contributors (out of over 300 Brody registered researchers).

Since the first announcement, we have done the following:
- Completed a one-day survey at the cemetery, which helped us to
estimate the required work.
- Put out a proposal for photographing the gravestones and reviewed
several responding bids.
- Selected a photographer
- Defined the scope of work

We want to begin photography next month, but whether we can get the
work done is up to YOU! We cannot sign a contract for work without
the adequate funding and this is the best season in which to do the
photography.

In order to have it happen, we need your help in raising the required
$4,500.

Please consider giving generously so that the work may begin now!
Donations can be through our JewishGenerosity account on either Gesher
Galicia's page:
http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/v_projectslist.asp?project_cat=
=3D14

Or on the Jewish Online Worldwide Burial Records (JOWBR) page:
http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/v_projectslist.asp?project_cat=32

Click on the box that reads: "Brody Cemetery Project." Contributions
are tax deductible for U.S. citizens. You contribute online with a
credit card or print up a form to fax or mail in with a check or
credit card number (US currency only).

Instructions: As there are multiple donation sites on each page --
make certain you click on the tab that reads: "Brody Cemetery
Project" so your donation is credited properly.
Higher levels of donations will give you early access to these records
and the Excel files:
$100+ Donations: you will receive an Excel spreadsheet with all the
information >from the headstones collected that will be going to JOWBR
in advance of the data being posted online.

Please contact me for questions.

Those of you that would like to join the 2nd phase of indexing the
photographed data, please contact me.

Meanwhile you can search your Brody ancestors at
http://sites.google.com/site/elyasaffamily/brody-data (this is the
output of our previous project that was done with the generosity of
the Brody researchers).

Translation Help-French to English #france

Hi All.

Is there someone familiar with French and English who would have the
time to translate some page out of REJ [MOD.: Revue des Etudes Juive]
for me.

I have tried using Google translate for this, but it only gives me a
general idea, and for my current research I need to be a little more
precise.

It is about six pages total, but I will divide it up into batches
of 2 pages, so not to be a large burden on anyone.
