What is involved in getting a French birth record >from 1886? I have a
precise date (which may or may not be correct) but I have no location other
than "France." I don't know if the Russian-born parents actually lived in
France or were just passing through on their way to New York.

What information would such a birth have about the parents? Birth places
(more specific that "Russia"), mother's maiden name, mother's parents?

Hello All,

Does anyone know if there are any Jewish birth, marriage or death
records for any towns >from the former Austro-Hungarian province of
Galicia currently available in Austria?
I am dealing with the minority of situations where the Jewish birth,
marriage and death records for a town, *registered in the town itself*,
do not exist for Jews in either the AGAD archives nor the town itself
according to the latest reports >from researchers and archivists.

The town in question for my researcher purposes is my grandmother's
hometown of Zaleszczyki which >from 1772 - 1918 belonged to the Austrian
empire (later the Austro-Hungarian empire when the dual monarchy was
introduced in Austria) and became a part of Poland in 1918, >from
1939-1941 was annexed by Russia, and since 1945 has been located in the
Ukraine.

By the way, if anyone has ever had success in obtaining any Jewish
birth, marriage or death records >from the town of Zaleszczyki which were
registered in Zaleszczyki itself, please let me know privately, I would
be very glad to know.

Searching for Judische Volkszeitung newspaper for year 1883 #usa

Paul King

I have been unable to locate any library deposit or finding aid through
Internet means of the newspaper ** Judische Volkszeitung ** for
the year 1883 (there is an isolated on-line article here or there).

Apparently, the newspaper was founded in 1877 and continued for
at least a decade, and was likely publishing out of New York City.
I cannot be certain whether it is solely in German or also contains
Yiddish entries. There are newspapers of the same name publishing
at later dates - they are not relevant.

I have searched to no avail the following on-line sites:

WorldCat Leo Baeck & YIVO New York Public Library
German-Language Newspaper Access in North America and UNT Digital Library

Researching HORWITZ, GOODMAN and NATHAN #usa

Beverley Davis

Greetings >from a new member:

My husband's great-grandmother, Flora HORWITZ, daughter of Bertram
HORWITZ and Hannah GOODMAN, was born in Posen, Prussia. She was
married at the age of 27 in New York, USA, in 1852, under the
auspices of congregation B'nai Jeshurun, and we still have her
original ketubah. A witness was Joseph GOODMAN, who was possibly a
brother of her mother.

We have never discovered when or why she arrived in the US, nor why
her London-born husband Mark NATHAN (who signed the ketubah in
English as Mark NEWTON) was there also! Her parents do not seem to
have left Prussia.

In 1853 the newlyweds travelled to Australia, together with her
unmarried sister (born in Bromberg, Prussia). An older brother had
arrived in Australia in 1842 and later married a London-born woman
before returning to Australia. He was very active in the early Jewish
congregational life in Tasmania and Melbourne.

It has been very tempting to claim connection with the very large and
eminent Horowitz(Margareten) family, but in all records we have
seen, both official, and those kept by our ancestors, they always
spelled their surname HORWITZ.

I would be so grateful if anyone "out there" could help us with any
information on our early family!
