Belarus / Minsk Records #general

ms nodrog

To all Minsk / Belarus researchers....
Recently I received the first file containing Minsk Birth records. These
records are one of the first files that will be available to those
researchers making a donation to this project. The file has over 1000
family names and listings for people born in the 1880's in Minsk (town,
uyezd and gubernia.) What an exciting find and addition to BelarusSig
researchers! I look forward to receiving more files as soon as enough funds
are accumulated.

Help fund these files. Read the information below and please make a
donation to help all Minsk / Belarus researchers.

Thanks and Good Luck with your research.
Hope Gordon

The Belarus SIG has recently gotten access to some records >from Minsk that
are not in the archives in Minsk and have not been filmed by the Family
History Library. These records are primarily for Minsk City, but some of
them also include a few shtetls in Minsk District.

Some of the records included are:
1. birth records 1866 Zaslsavye
2. death records 1867 (some months) Minsk
3. birth records 1879-1900 and 1906 and 1917 Minsk
4. birth records 1890 (incomplete) Rokov
5, marriage records 1907 Ostroshitskiy Gorodok
6. death records 1908 Kaminsk
7. marriage records 1914 Minsk
8. In addition to these metrical records, tax records, conscription lists,
and resident lists are also available.

If you want to make sure these records are translated and made available
for your personal research, please make a generous donation to the Minsk
Gubernia: Revision Lists and Metrical Records Project by going to:

http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/v_projectslist.asp?project_cat=1

Scroll down the page till you find the project.

Thanks for all your support!

Many thanks to the people who were so kind as to reply to my query. It
clarified the situation for me. But no relatives came calling.

Searching for Probate Record in New York #general

Gary Gershfield

Hello to all,
I came across a mysterious probate record >from 1962 filed in the Bronx.
The probate record was not a will, but a Letter of Administration filed by
the deceased's sister indicating that there was no known will.

What is shocking is that it reads that the deceased left no children,
indicating that the estate should be divided among the sister and her children.

The deceased did indeed have 2 sons (same surname): 17 years old and 11
years old, living with their mother in the Bronx. The deceased had separated
from the mother, but was in contact with both sons, and visited them regularly.
Would there be any other type of record that I can search for? Has anyone
ever encountered a relative having 2 probate records?

In other words, could a relative have filed a Letter of Administration in
one borough, while there was actually another probate record (a Will) somewhere
else?

I would be grateful for some leads, and some experiences. Thank you.

Bone Marrow match urgently needed for 2-year old New Jersey resident #sephardic

Karen Lefkowitz

Although I am a long-time researcher (JewishGen Registration No.
3829), this is the most important message I have ever written.
My 2-year old grandson Ezra Fineman has a rare primary immune
deficiency called Hyper IgM Syndrome. The only cure is a bone marrow
transplant. He needs to find a donor that is his perfect match and
that match could be YOU or a member of your family.
Since tissue type is inherited, Ezra's best chance of finding a match
lies with those of Eastern European ancestry, particularly Polish and
Hungarian. The towns and surnames associated with Ezra's ancestry are
listed below.
However, donors of *all* backgrounds are needed and the Gift of Life
Foundation is making it easy for you to join the bone marrow registry
to see if you may be Ezra's perfect match or some other patient's
miracle match.

Here's how you can participate:
1) Potential donors must be age 18-60 and in general good health to
join the registry.

Cheek swab test kits can be ordered online through Gift of Life Bone
Marrow Foundation at

https://www.giftoflife.org/dc/Help4Ezra/blog.aspx

or find a bone marrow drive near you at:

http://www.giftoflife.org/Public/Events.aspx

2) If you are above the age of 60, please encourage your family
members and friends to join the registry.

3) If you reside outside of the United States and Canada, please
contact help4ezra@... for more information.

4) For more information, please go to:
https://www.giftoflife.org/dc/Help4Ezra/blog.aspx or contact
help4ezra@.... The Gift of Life Coordinator for this project is
Shayne Pilpel. Shayne would be pleased to answer any questions about
the Gift of Life Foundation and can be reached at:
spilpel@...

On behalf of my daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Evan Fineman, the
parents of Ezra, I thank you for whatever role you or family can play
at this critical time.

Conscription into the Russian Army #lithuania

michael kransdorff <mkransdorff@...>

Hi Litvaksiggers,

I am hoping you can help clarify the rules relating to military
conscription into the Tsarist army. When did the 5 year military
conscription begin? who did it apply to? Were first born males exempt?
What about only sons? Did they have to go? And at what age was
conscription required? What would happen to a family if their son ran
away and did not serve. Would they be punished?

I know Pesach is over but I still have all these questions.

Kind regards

Michael Kransdorff

Looking for family: SHOCHET Suvainiskis, Riga and Kazan; LEVIN
Rokiskis, HERRING Rietavas, SACKS Tver, KATZ Subacius, GLAS Kupiskis.
