Researching Harshfield #latvia

Steve&MK <sgharsh@...>

I need some help. I have been only able to find my Grandfather's family
in the USA and England, but nothing else. What I have found is the
following:

Jacob (Yacov) Harshfield Born Riga, Latvia 1846 per 1911 UK Census
Married (approximately 1876) Mary Levy (per Son Samuel's Death
Certificate) Born Riga, Latvia 1861 per UK 1911 Census.

According to the 1911 UK Census there were 10 children, 5 alive at the
time of the census and 5 deceased.

Of the 5 living children at the time were my Grandfather Samuel Henry
(born Riga 4/22/1881); Annie (born Riga 1892); Fanny (born Riga 1894);
Abey (born Riga 1896 and another child still unidentified.

They all immigrated to England and at least my grandfather subsequently
brought the family to the USA in 1922/23.

Jacob, my great grandfather died in Mile End Old Town (London) in 1915
and is buried there. However, I have no idea what happened to my
greatgrandmother or my grandfather's siblings.

I will be spending a day in Riga in the later part of July and will try
to do some research while there but have no idea where to even start.

Any help and or suggestions would be appreciated. I can be e-mailed
direct at sgharsh@...

Thanks,

Steve Harshfield

conscription in Poland? #general

apollo <apollo@...>

According to his official birth certificate, my great-uncle was born in
Lodz, Poland, in 1921. However, he claims that this should actually be 1925
and that the Polish clerks regularly "made boys look older than they really
were so they could draft them into the army". The birth certificate not only
says he was born in 1921, but the document itself is dated 1921, and I am
wondering whether a clerk could have forged the registration date as well as
the birth date. Clearly, whether he was born in 1921 or in 1925, my
great-uncle is no spring chicken, but is there anything in what he said
about making boys seem older in order to draft them? Also, can anyone tell
me if Poland had compulsory military service in the 1920's/30's? If so, what
were the conditions? (Were Jews drafted? For how long? >from what age? etc.)

Thanks,
Miriam Bulwar David-Hay,
Ra'anana, Israel.

from time to time, people express their frustrations at not finding entries to
the United States at any of the expected ports or crossing points.

I just had my first experience with passengers arriving at Providence. Sailing
was >from Jaffa in 1929. I don't recall any discussion of this possibility
before, but even if there was, it may be useful to mention it again.

Sara KLEIN/KLEINER, Ukraine, Toronto, Los Angeles #general

Hi:

I am searching for information regarding my great aunt Sara KLEIN/KLEINER.

Sara was one of six children of Abraham Kleiner and Rochel (surname
unknown). The family originated in the Ukraine near Odessa, Carpathian
Mountains and Pavlinka.

Sara KLEINER's siblings were: Mirel (David PALATNIK), Bessie (Jacob Itzhak
HOFFMAN), Feige (Sholom Yakov SLATON, SLATER, SLOTKIN, any spelling), Samuel
(Rosie SLATKY) and Ruhel (spouse unknown).

Sara KLEINER (spouse unknown), her family and her siblings and their
families immigrated to Canada circa 1908.

Sara and her husband had two sons and two daughters, and at one time lived
on Euclid Avenue in Toronto. Their oldest son's wife was a softball player
in Toronto, and the younger son's wife and daughter attended City College in
Los Angeles. The youngest daughter married a Canadian serviceman and moved
to L.A. The eldest daughter had a boyfriend or husband by the surname of
JUBUS and was Sara's only child that remained in Canada.

Oderberg Germany Jewish Cemetery #general

Ittai Hershman

I recently discovered that my relative Benjamin Lieber (born in Brzozow)
died on 26 December 1914 as an Austro-Hungarian World War I casualty. The
record in German states "gestorben im Spital Deutsche Schule im Bahnhof
Oderberg, beerdigt am dortingen Freidhof". (Ref: http://tinyurl.com/3rccn5o
for the curious).

Oderberg seems to be about 65km Northeast of Berlin as the crow flies. And
sure enough, it seems there is a Jewish cemetery there
(http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oderberg), but it is not included in JOWBR.
It is listed in the International Jewish Cemetery Project, but without any
details.

I would be grateful for any information about the state of this Jewish
cemetery and the odds of finding his 1914 grave intact. Ideally, of course,
I am seeking a photograph.

searching for ZIEDER family Manchester/Dublin/Cork #general

Ben Forman

Hi Genners

I would very much like t get in touch with the family of Samuel
"Willy" ZIEDER originally of Cork Ireland, who sadly passed away in
March in Manchester. Mr ZIEDER's death was reported on the Shalom
Ireland site as follows:

"Samuel "Willy" ZIEDER - Shmuel ben Avrohom Abba HaLevi, formerly of
Cork and Dublin, the father of David has passed away in Manchester.
The Funeral took place this afternoon (Friday) in Manchester"

According to the Geni website Samuel had a wife Miriam and children
David, Alan and Harold, and it is they who I would like to be able to
get in touch with.

I believe that this branch of the ZEYDER family is connected to my
SEIDER family via a common ancestor >from Lithuania; one of his sons
Raphael emigrated to Manchester in the late 1800s, whilst a grandson
Bernard (Ber ?) emigrated to Ireland.

I am in touch with several of Raphael's direct male descendants none
of whom have a history of being Levites and so I would very much like
to contact my likely Irish cousins.

If anyone is able to contact them on my behalf, I realise that this
may not be an appropriate time but I would be very grateful for any
introduction at a time the family is comfortable with.

Please reply privately

Thanks as always

help need to interpret photo #general

apollo <apollo@...>

I have posted a photo on Viewmate of my paternal great-grandparents which
was taken in Poland, probably in Lodz, before WWII. In the photo, my
great-grandfather is wearing a black head covering something like a fez
(bigger than a yarmulke but brimless) and a dark wrap-around coat. Obviously
he was religious, but I would very much appreciate it if someone could tell
me more about what this clothing is called and what it signifies (eg. a
particular religious affiliation, a particular occupation, a particular
place, etc.) Also, I am wondering if my great-grandmother would have been
wearing a wig in those days, or if that was actually her hair. The link is:

http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=18868

Many thanks in advance!
Miriam Bulwar David-Hay,
Ra'anana, Israel.

P.S. One of the photos that play in a loop on JewishGen's home page is of a
family in which the man is wearing almost identical dress, but there are no
captions with those photos.

Help identifying young man's uniform #general

Danielle Weiner

I have uploaded an image to ViewMate that I would like some help with.
It is a passport application photo of my father at age 13 c.1921/22.
It appears he is wearing a uniform but I have no idea what kind of
uniform it might be. I am pretty sure the photo was taken in Vilna,
where he lived. Can anyone possibly help identify his clothing?

It is image #18849 on ViewMate. Sorry, I do not know how to provide a
direct link to the image.

Many thanks,

It's all Greek, well Polish, to me... #general

Hi all-

I finally found a bunch of vital records, but they are all in Polish. I have
uploaded them to Viewmate and I am hoping that some kind soul can help me to
translate them into English. You can find them on Viewmate here:

The first two are the first and second half of the Kolski-Jakubow marriage
certificate. The third and fourth are the first and second half of the
Amber-Paris marriage certificate. Sorry I had to break these into two
pieces....
The last one is Rafal Hersz Kolski's birth certificate.

If possible I would like a full translation.

Truly grateful for any help.
