New UK Cemeteries Databases #unitedkingdom

David Shulman

A number of new burial databases have recently been added to JCR-UK.

I. Sunderland Cemetery
The Sunderland (Bishopwearmouth) Jewish Cemetery Database is now
available on JCR-UK at
https://www.jewishgen.org/jcr-uk/Cemeteries/Sunderland_Cemetery/Cemetery_Menu.htm.
The database, hosted by JCR-UK, contains records of nearly 1,500
burials, including over 1,260 photographs of headstones, with GPS
coordinates for each individual grave (accurate to about one metre)
together with a button which, when clicked, brings up a Google
satellite image of the cemetery showing the location of the grave.
Many thanks go to Alan Tobias, David Gordon, Malcolm Sender and Robert
da Costa, through whose efforts and support the database was created.

2, New Southgate Cemetery
Records of burials at the New Southgate Cemetery of the former Hendon
Reform Synagogue (now merged into the Edgware & Hendon Reform
Synagogue) are now available. The !,156 records (including 323
photographs of headstones) cover the period 1968 through 2016 and also
includes records of cremations recorded in the Synagogue's burial
register. These records are a JCR-UK submission to JOWBR and may be
searched through either JCR-UK's All-UK Database
(https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/UK/) or JOWBR
(https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/).
Many thanks go to Jessica Feinstein, who transcribed the records, and
Gina Marks, who provided the photographs.

3. Elswick and Heaton Cemeteries, Newcastle upon Tyne
Newly transcribed burial records of these Newcastle cemeteries are now
available and comprise 743 records with 567 headstone photographs for
Elswick Cemetery and 404 records with 376 headstone photographs for
Heaton Cemetery. These records are also JCR-UK submissions to JOWBR
and may be searched through either JCR-UK's All-UK Database or JOWBR
(as above).
Many thanks go to Deborah Ross, who transcribed the records, and Peter
Gatoff, who provided most of the photographs.
Earlier databases transcribed by Deborah include Darlington (126
records and 111 photographs), South Shields (244 records and 174
photographs), Whitley Bay (91 records and photographs) and the small
Jewish cemetery in Bishop Auckland (13 records and photographs), all
of which are JCR-UK submissions to JOWBR.

BERNSTEIN, BARER - Podkamen and Ihrowica #galicia

Bonnie Birns

Hello,

This is my first post to Gesher Galicia. I just joined today after the
IAJGS conference.

I recently found records about my BERNSTEIN and BARER family,
some >from the ancestral town of Podkamen, and some >from the
nearby town of Ihrowica.

I found 4 records
- the birth record of Samuel Bernstein in 1912 (my grandfather)
- the birth and death records of brother Josef in 1910, who died at
the age of 2 1/2 months
- the marriage record of father Sholom Bernstein's younger brother,
Osias Heschel, married to a Marjem (MIriam) Bernstein, probably a
cousin marriage, as that runs in the family.

I am also enclosing the links if you want to look at the actual records
yourself on JRI-Poland. I had them translated in Cleveland. (Thank
you, Jodi Tzucker.)

- Military pass; Regiment #80; Registration Book #237 (proof of
military service)
- Proof of majority - old enough to get married
- Banns read 20 Jun, 27 Jun, 4 Jul 1914

2 questions I have for the group:

1. Josef and Sam were born in the neighboring town of Ihrowica, not
Podkamen. Since their father Sholom was a vintner, I believe he may
have been farming land outside of Podkamen.

2. Their house number in Ihrowica has the phrase "obszar dworski".
Does anyone have an explanation of what this means? Did they own
the land or just farm it for a landlord?

I will also be following up on Osias and Marjem. I do not have any
other information about them, but I will search Holocaust records
and other places, to see if there is any trace of them.

Thank you,

Organization Of Lowicz Survivors in Israel - David Golumb #general

Avraham Y. Kahana <avreimale@...>

Does anyone have any information about a Lowicz (Poland) Survivors
organization, that once existed in Israel ? There is one David Golumb
that submitted Yad Vashem testimonial pages for individuals >from this
town, some of them my relatives.

Thanks in advance,

Peculiar burial question, Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Queens #general

David W. Perle

Hi, all.
I have been a bit perplexed about something ever since visiting a pair of
great-great-great-grandparents' graves for the first time at Mount Carmel
Cemetery in Queens, NY: The rows in their section are so close to each
other! Meaning, it's no more than about 5 feet in between rows of head
stones. There's no way that all of those people were so short, so I'm a
bit perplexed about how they were all buried. This section happens to be
on a hill (sloping downward as you face the fronts of the stones), so I
wonder if the caskets are perhaps parallel to the slope, which would give
a bit more length? (But that seems especially awkward since it's sloping
downward to the back.) Thoughts?
