Vienna Bombings #general

My great-great uncle, Hermann BEINHACKER, was buried in the Zentralfriedhof
Cemetery on May 10, 1907 at age 82. His cause of death is listed in the
JewishGen Worldwide Burial Registry-Austria as, "Died in bombing." He is
buried in the same grave, Sec: T1, Group: 19, Row: 47, Grave: 19, with his wife
Fanny (nee Braun) BEINHACKER. Coincidentally, Fanny, who was buried Nov. 12,1893,
also died in a bombing. Does anyone have any information about bombings that
occurred in Vienna around these dates?
Please reply to me off-list.

Rabbi POTOVSKI / POTOVSKY - Piotrkow, Poland #general

Jessica Leschnikoff <jessica@...>

Hello genners,
Need help with tracing my cousin's family. She was Ernestine POTOVSKI-ROSE,
the jewish feminist who ended up an atheist and travelling the USA lecturing
on social freedom etc.

She was born in Poland in 1810 to an orthodox Rabbi in Piotrkow. It seems
that she is buried in Highgate Cemetery, and her middle names were variously
LOUISE / SIGISMUND / LASMOND. It is possible that SIGISMUND was her
mother's maiden name.

This is the first time I've found a family member who came >from a Rabbinical
family (i.e. a father was a Rabbi as opposed to a brother or uncle etc). I
don't know if Rabbi Potovski had any other children, though I have read that
after his wife (Ernestine's mother) died when she was still very young, he
remarried quickly. So who knows.

My question is whether anyone knows of a list of Rabbis practicing in the
Piotrkow area around 1810 and whether it is possible to find anything out
about their family trees.

I have quite a bit of biographical information about Ernestine as her middle
and latter life was well documented here in the UK and in the USA. She
unfortunately didn't have any children, so I'm not likely to stumble upon
any lost cousins through her!

Anyhow, thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me - if I've
forgotten the posting rules, I apologise!

Best wishes, and belated Happy New Year to you all,

Jessica LESCHNIKOFF, UK

I am doing research on my grandfather's family. Here is what I know and if
anyone can add or help i would appreciate it greatly.
Abraham WEBER arrived in NY on the Hamburg ship at 17. He was single and
listed that he was >from Laka and going to David RESPLER. Abraham's parents
names were Elkune Weber and mother was Malka (RUHDORFER) Weber
I believe he left a brother Bernard and Dawid besides parents in Europe.
Abraham married Ruth HOSCHANDER in 1931. am looking for any help.

Laka, pron.[loh nkah] is a village in the Sambor (currently Sambir) district
of what was known as the Eastern Galicia, the Austro-Hungarian Crown Land

There are actually were two adjacent villages known as Laka Rustykalna
(Ukrainian or Greek Orthodox) and Laka Szlachecka (Roman Catholic).

At some periods of time villages have been united under one roof and name
and again split later into two separate administrative localities.

Currently village is known under its Ukrainian name: Luka. There are several
places in Ukraine under the name Luka as village name means a "meadow". You
can pinpoint "your" Luka (Lonka) under 4930 2330 coordinates

On Jewish Records-Indexing databse you will see recorded relations between
Rudorfers and Webers >from Laka under Sambor.

BTW Carol Raspler is searching for Rasplers >from Laka - please refer to JGFF
database.

Correct surname of this family, listed in the US census, living in Chicago? #general

Mark London <mrl@...>

Can anyone figure out what the correct surname of this family is?

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.2/1TTK-9Q7/p_51007454

Is it really Golfan? I can't find any birth records for the children of
that family in the Chicago records, so I suspect the surname is wrong.
Thanks.

ViewMate Trenslation Request #general

scrsshelly@aol.com <scrsshelly@...>

I have posted a 4 page letter in Russian that was given to me by Russian
relatives in the 1990s along with a hand drawn family tree. I believe the
content of the letter has something to do with the history of my family. I
would like a word for word translation, but it is long so loose translation
would be fine.

Each page of the letter is posted on ViewMate, but I am not sure if the
pages are on the correct order. You can see them at the following addresses:

Searching for Sommerman(n), Braunfeld, Goldberg families in Debica (Galicia), Austria #general

Karen Wyman

I am searching for connections and information on my grandmother and her family.

Feige SOMMERMAN(N) was born in 1893 in Debica, Galicia, Austria. She died in
Cleveland, OH, USA in 1961.

Her mother was: Sara(h) (nee BRAUNFELD), father Mayer SOMMERMAN(N) (per her
1910 NYC marriage certificate). She had at least one sister (possibly named
Bialcha) and a brother. I do not believe that her parents nor siblings immigrated
to the US.

Feige immigrated to the US in 1909 with her cousin Hirsch (Harry) BRAUNFELD, who
for some reason, traveled under his mother=92s maiden name of GOLDBERG (Beile
BRAUNFELD-nee GOLDBERG).

In New York City in 1910, Feige changed her name to Fani and married Louis KATZ
(Lajos KATZ) (1888-1968) of Drahova/Kovesliget, Hungary.

Around 1911, Fani and Louis, followed Fani's cousin Anna (nee BRAUNFELD,
erroneously written as BROWNSFIELD) and Anna's husband Max ROSENBERG, to
Cleveland, OH.

Anna and Harry's siblings (per numerous census and obits) were Mordche (Max),
Jankel and David. Their father is noted as Motel BRAUNFELD.

Although I was told that Fani came >from a shtetl near Vienna, the 1909 ship's
manifest lists both Feige and Hirsch as coming >from Debica.

Any info, suggestions or connections are most welcome!

Thank you,
Karen Wyman
