Re: Retrieving German Citizenship
Renee Steinig
A marriage record on Ancestry shows that Eugen Freudenburg and Ida "Siegheim" married on 31 Juli 1910 in a church in Weinheim (https://tinyurl.com/Siegheim-Freudenburg). Birth dates and parents' names match. If Ida converted before that ceremony, eligibility for restored citizenship might be impacted. Anastasiia Petrovskaia-Kaminskaia <tonx2012@...>
Hello.
My name is Anastasiia Petrovskaia-Kaminskaia. I'm looking for any information about my Jewish ancestors.
Let me briefly tell my family story. My great-great-grandma Miriam Kaminska (is supposed to be born in 1868) had been living in Poland in the early 1900s with her husband Neeman/Nahman/Konstantin Kaminski and at least two daughters, Olga/Golda (born in 1905) and Milena/Milah/Ludmila Kaminska (born in 1907). Also, probably, they had had two sons: the oldest child Abraham Kaminski and Isaak/Izrail/Nikolay who was the youngest child. The head of the family had a shoe shop.
At 1915 Miriam and children ran from Poland to Dvinsk (sisters had been studying at the local Jewish school, which one - have no idea but I very curious) at first and to Grodno then.
At 1918 family situated in Ukraine where Miriam left her children in the orphanage, worked as a Red Cross' nurse and then died because of typhoid in (probably) Borschagovka that's the place in Kyiv. Sisters had got married, the oldest boy died, the youngest boy was admitted to the Moscow university and had stayed in Russia.
During WWII Golda/Olga had been pretending to be Polish in Lviv and that's why survived. Milah with her children (including my 1 y.o. grandma) ran to the Ural where she died in the 80s.
Milah had been refusing to tell her Jewish family history to her grandson, my father, and told her daughter, my grandma, to keep silent as well. We know something about our family from Golda/Olga Kaminska's offspring, they know little though too.
I have Miriam's and Milah's photos. Also, our family's surname may be Steinman as it one of the possible translations of "Kaminski".
I will be very grateful if you share with me your thoughts about where I can look for information about my ancestors.
And one more moment, I'm from Russia so I can't go straight to Ukraine because of things that my government has done 😒

JGS of Washington State invites you to a free program on Monday evening, 3/9/20: “Sex, Lies, and Genealogical Tape” presented by Ron Arons
Karen Campbell
The Jewish Genealogical Society of Washington State invites you to a free program,
"Sex, Lies, and Genealogical Tape" presented by Ron Arons, Genealogical Lecturer DATE: Monday, March 9, 2020 LOCATION: LDS Factoria Building 4200 124th Ave SE, Bellevue, WA 98006 • Doors open at 6:30 p.m., for all to enjoy our extensive library of genealogical resources, including FREE access to the FHC computers and genealogical websites! • Free Wi-Fi available. Come early and network with other attendees! • Presentation starts promptly at 7:15 p.m. • Free admission and refreshments ABOUT OUR PROGRAM Most genealogists naturally spend their time looking for new ancestors to expand their family trees as wide and as far back in time as possible. This is done by searching for the answers to the questions, Who? When? and Where? However, a completely different experience can be had by researching one individual in as much depth by collecting as much documentation about that person and related individuals as possible, as well as looking at the environments where they lived. By taking this approach, a researcher can explore the questions: Why? and How? For example, Why did our ancestor act the way that he or she did? How did that person have an impact on my life? How can we explain events and other things in our lives by their behavior? Individual-focused genealogy can have some unexpected positive benefits as this presentation will clearly demonstrate. Ron will demonstrate the unintended benefit of this methodology: it surprisingly let him break through some brick walls, allowing him to push his heritage back four more generations and find a plethora of living relatives he never knew beforehand. The talk will showcase a wide range of genealogical tools, records and methodologies which, if employed, could easily make anyone a better researcher. ABOUT OUR SPEAKER Born in New York, Ron Arons earned a B.S. in Engineering from Princeton and an MBA from the University of Chicago. He was employed as a marketer at many high-tech companies before deciding to work full time on his first book, The Jews of Sing Sing. Ron became interested in understanding his roots after he lost both his parents to cancer almost 20 years ago. In the process of researching a criminal ancestor’s past, Ron has traced his roots to England, Poland, Romania, Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania. Unlike his criminal ancestor, Ron was reared a goodie two shoes and has never been afoul of the law! In 2005 Ron won a Hackman Research Residency Award from the New York State Archives to continue his research of New York Jewish criminals. In January 2008, Ron appeared on the PBS television series, “The Jewish Americans,“ as the acknowledged expert on Jewish criminals of New York’s Lower East Side. Ron has made presentations at 12 IAJGS conferences and tours the country giving educational and entertaining presentations on Jewish criminals and Jewish genealogy. 2 questions about research while traveling to Israel
Is there a central source for finding the gravesites of ancestors who I know are buried in Israel?
Can I do research about the fate of family members who were in Romania and Hungary during the Holocaust at Yad Vashem or elsewhere in Israel? Thanks you for any information about these queries. Thank you for your help! Elise Frances Miller San Mateo, CA elisefmiller@...

I would want to know why he wants to post your aunt's testimony on his FB page. As she is not his relative, this seems unusual to me, at the very least. I would proceed cautiously, if at all, given the frequency with which the accounts of real people are cloned or otherwise misappropriated.

The town name Walladuk is probably misread. The first capital letter may be M (like in the handwritten Shoe Maker, May 25, Married,....).
The closest match I found is Malachovka (could d be ch?). One place is in Ukraine(near Kiev), another one near Moscow. The Ellis Island manifest may not be the right one. Solomon's profession in this manifest is "tailor", not shoe maker. Valentin Lupu Israel

Re: searching for information on family of Jake (Yankel) MUSHKAT
jbonline1111@...
Thank you to those who wrote me publicly and privately, especially Johanna Becker who researched Mr. Mushkat for me.
Many wrote me to suggest possible reasons he left my father and avenues of research. These pretty much followed the lines that I had already assumed. I am grateful for the time each of you spent considering the situation. -- Barbara Sloan Conway, SC

-------- Original message -------- From: Rochelle Gershenow <rpgersh@...> Date: 19/02/2020 15:59 (GMT+00:00) To: main@... Subject: [JewishGen.org] Retrieving German Citizenship I am writing for a friend, Rebecca, who is trying to recover the German citizenship that was stripped from her Grandmother by the Nazi citizenship laws. Rebecca is of Jewish descent on her mother's side.
Rebecca has visited Germany and has gotten most of the basic documents. Her Grandmother, Ida Seigheim, was born 6/28/1887 in Georgenheim bei Tamowitz Oberschleisen, Germany to Bertha Berliner (b. 1841 Oppeln Oberschleisen, Germany – now Opole,, Poland) and Eugen Seigheim (b. 1840 Oppeln). Ida married Dr Ernst Freudenburg on May 23, 1910 in Munich. Ernst was the Director of the pediatric hospital In Marburg. A 1933 law said that any Aryan married to a Non-Aryan could no longer serve as a state employee. Being forced to leave his position, the family left Germany in 1938 for Basel after paying the Jewish departure tax.
In 2017, Germany passed a law authorizing the descendants of Germans who were deprived of their citizenship because of religion to apply to have that citizenship reinstated. Rebecca has been working to prove that her grandmother was in fact a German citizen and that she was Jewish. Ida’s birth certificate proves that she was a German citizen but does not mention her religion. Her marriage certificate states her religion as "..braischer". Apparently the first two letters" He" were cropped in making the copy and the German authorities say that is not enough. Her grandmother’s parents were both Jewish and were members of the Neue Synagogue in Opplen Germany, now Opole Poland.
Any suggestions on how Rebecca can prove that her grandmother was Jewish or on how she can get copies of German documents from Poland.

There is no "W" in Cyrillic. I would suggest checking Polish, Lithuanian, or Latvian sources.

About Link 2: I checked a few Russian genealogy sites… Could not find any location that would remotely resemble “Walls…” (with a different variation of the spelling for the second part of the word). Maybe the location in one of the Soviet Republics? At the time of the Soviet Union people tend to write Russia as a location, rather then refer to the actual republic name… As to Link 1, it is very hard to read… Sorry...
