Problems with Spam! #general

Giorgetti Operetta Spettacoli <giorgetti@...>

Dear Genners - Internet can be a problem - even if my computer tells me the
email could possibly be "Spam", I'm allowed to opened the messages. I did
receive all of Barbara Zimmer's (wonderful) messages, not knowing that she
was receiving notices that her mails had been rejected!
To save a lot of problems I have changed my email address, hoping that this
one will work better!
I must thank all the Genners who let me know that Barbara was having
problems, and of course another great thank you for all the information
Barbara has sent me!
A wonderful day to you all,
Jean Bennett Giorgetti

Meldekarten & Old Telephone Directories of Bratislava #hungary

yvstern@...

I'm searching for my relatives KOPF who moved to Bratislava in 1905.
(see Family data below ).

The Archives of the Capital of the Slovak Republic Bratislava didn't =
find
data about the KOPF family in the jewish BMD records or in
other archival documents.

Enquiries in Vienna and Budapest had no result, either.

Since there are no BMD records of the KOPF Family in these towns,
the best source would be the Meldekarten at the Bratislava
Einwohnermeldeamt.

Can anybody tell me whether the practice of Meldekarten was
required in Slovakia before 1918, and, if yes, where they are kept.

Another excelent source are the old telephone books, but again I
don't know whether the directories for Bratislava for 1900-1920 still
exist.

Any suggestions where else I should/could look for the KOPF data?

*KOPF Family Data:
David KOPF ( born 1865, in Bielitz) was married to my gr-aunt
Elfriede KOPF, n=E9e STERN (born 1875, in Elberfeld, Germany) .

They had 3 children :
Hans Dagobert KOPF, born 4.Jun 1896 in Braunschweig,
Carl Stephan KOPF, born 28.March 1898 in Braunschweig
Ilse KOPF, born 7.April 1901 in Koenigsberg (Kaliningrad).

SHUCHMAN Obits - help requested #general

Marie Spearman

Harry SHUCHMAN died 5 January 1948 and wife Clara Lemovitz Shuchman died 17
October 1979. I've found their burial at Mount Lebanon Cemetery online
(www.mountlebanoncemetery.com) but have not been successful in finding
obituaries.

I received Harry's death certificate >from the Borough of Brooklyn this week.
He was 57, a tinsmith, born in Russia, father David, and mother Genee/Genu
Shapiro. Informant was a daughter, Ruth Kapperman?? Or K???erman - looks
like 2 p's but no discernable vowel between the K and first p.

No birth date on Harry's death certificate, but on his WWII draft
registration card, birth date is 15 May 1889; place Kiev, Russia. On most
records found thus far his and Clara's residence is consistently *** 5th
Avenue, Brooklyn.

Clara's birth on her Petition for Naturalization is 30 November 1892, Kiev,
Russia. She stated she was m. 30 July 1916 at Brooklyn, but marriage
certificate just received is dated 30 July 1917. On her Petition two
daughters are listed: Ethel, b. 6 January 1918 and Ruth, b. 31 March 1921.
This Petition was filed 24 July 1925.

In the 1930 census, a third daughter is listed, Gertrude, age 8 months.

I do have a request into the Brooklyn Public Library via the Ask A Librarian
service. I had a live-chat session with a volunteer who sent my request to
the Brooklyn library to ascertain if anyone there could look for newspaper
obits or death notices.

But in the meantime, direction >from members of this list will be greatly
appreciated.

Re: NY Cemetery Suggestions #general

A. E. Jordan

there is a Lilly Gerstein death record in the database produced by the
Italian Genealogy Society in New York (http://www.italiangen.org/) and
it shows she died on Aug. 6 1948 at age 34 in Manhattan

Checking The New York Times there is an obitf or Lilly Gerstein on Aug
7, 1948 and she is the daughter of Fanny and the sister of Bertha
Straus and Joseph. Unfortunately it only said services at Riverside
and no details on interment.

I then looked at Fannie's death notice also in The New York Times and
again it does not have a location of burial only Riverside for the
service. Possibly Riverside has the records >from 1966 if not 1948?
Fannie's obit appears November 2, 1966 in the paper. She is the wife
of the late Rabbi Nathan Gerstein, mother of Berta Strauss, Joseph and
the late Lilly Gerstein. Grandmother to Terrance, Robert, Neal, Paul
and Elizabeth.

The suggestion of getting the death certificate is correct as they may
have written down the name of the cemetery or the town in which the
cemetery was located. However a much less expensive way of accessing
the death record is via any Family History Center of the LDS. They
have the NYC death certificates on microfilm and although I have not
done it personally I am told it is easy and only costs a few dollars to
order and have the certificate mailed to you.

Fannie's certificate would still be with the Health Department in NYC
and only direct family members could order it by mail. But it would be
available and if you want to make certain of the information at the New
York Public Library's main research library on Fifth Avenue and 42nd
Street in the genealogy collection on the open shelf is an index of
deaths in NYC which would give the name, date, borough of death and the
certificate number.

Dear Genners,
I am anxious to have the two items I posted to Viewmate translated into English.
I believe they are both >from my Aunt who perished in the Holocaust.

Unfortunately, I do not have the originals. I only have copies of the originals
and have tried to raise the resolution and contrast of the copies.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The links are:

Records and researchers for Khotin, Ukraine: Looking for Recommendations #general

Shawn Weil <euphman@...>

Good morning, Genners-

I'm looking for suggestions for folks to do some research on my family
surname (TELEFUS) in archives in the former Bessarabia. The descendants of
several US and Israeli TELEFUS families >from what is now Khotin, Ukraine
have been in touch for some time, but we've been unable to tie those
branches together. I'm looking for pre-1910 Russian/Romanian/Moldovan vital
records, census data, or other records to help identify the common link.

1. Suggestions for particular researchers/archivists and descriptions of
your experience with them.
2. Description of the information they were able to provide. What records
still exist, and where?

I've searched the JewishGen archives and received some information already.
Any other information would be very much appreciated. Please reply

Thank you!

You could go through Ancestry.de (the German Ancestry.com) and search through
the Hamburg departure passenger lists. When I did that, it told me theirages,
the town and district area they came from, plus the date of sailing, the ship's
info, where they were going, etc. It is German, however.
