Welcome to all our Belarus "cousins."
As some of you might know, I have been researching Mogilev city, Gorki (near to Mogilev), Zavarezh'ye and Vorotinschtina (a village and its closest agricultural colony established 1830 about 18 km south southwest from Mogilev proper). Lupalov (the southern end of Mogilev city), alsofigures in our searches, as well as Chaussy and Bobruisk. On the road from Bobruisk to Mogilev is also a small bump called Yasin, which alsofigures. Sorry I missed the formation of the SIG in Los Angeles. I was planning to come but a family emergency kept me away. Thanks to David and others for taking the initiative. The names and places I am researching include the following (there are even more appearing daily!): TALALAY, TALALAI: Mogilev, Zaverezh'ye, Vorotinshtina, Bobruisk, Minsk, Baranovichi, Gomel, Moscow, St. Petersburg. In Mogilev >from about 1790 to present. Also, Novosibirsk, Siberia, as well as Israel and America (new immigrants). David-goroduk also features in search. In America: TOLLIN, TALLIN, TOLL, TALL, TAYLOR (New Jersey, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Boston and Springfield in Massachusetts, Detroit). MIRLS, MERLIN, MITTLEMAN, BERLIN, JASSEN, YASIN, KONVISER, KONWISER, BERLIN, KORE, STAROSELSKY, SHULMAN, MURAVCHIK. Mogilev and surrounds. YASIN/JASSEN >from Chaussy near Mogilev. BRUSTERMAN: Gomel VISOTSKY/WISOTZKY: Bobruisk, descendents of Yehuda HaCohen VISOTSKY. TALALAI - rabbinical, descendents of Rabbi Leib ben Michael TALALAI--my ggggf. Talmudic scholar and rabbi of Bet Din in Mogilev, as were several of his sons. KONVISER: Mogilev mohelim. BERLIN: Rabbinical family in Mogilev and other Belarus areas. Good luck to all. Thank you, David Fox. Schelly TALALAY Dardashti JGS of Southern Nevada-East dardasht@ix.netcom.com

I tried to contact Issie Fine at the email address noted on the posting,
but only got a Mailer Demon in return...In any event this is what I sent him: Dear Issie Fine.... Your lucky day....or should I say this is one FINE day for you... _Gorodeya is very close to _Nesvizh_... _Nesvizh_ was the center of Jewish life for people in that area. My Family, on both sides, maternally, was from that area. My GrandMother's family was >from Gorodeya. They allgravitated to Nesvizh for school, shul and other "stuff". I suggest that you search the NESVIZH SHTETL Website.......... <http://www1.jewishgen.org/shtetlinks/nesvizh/nesvizh.html>. Especially the New York Cemetery listings that you'll find on the site. You will find some FINE's in most of the cemetery listings. You might even consider joining our little SIG. No cost, no obligation...just information sharing and some friendly chatter >from time to time. Elliott (ET) Terman

Ellen,
My mother was very friendly with a Sattler family in Brooklyn, NY. William Sattler died about 30 years ago. I believe he had a sister who died before him. I don't know anything about their background. They were definitly Jewish. William's window and daughter live in the New York area. If you think they may be related, I will try to contact them for you. Michael Levine Brooklyn, NY

JRI Poland #Poland Fwd: Problem with Polish Genealogist
#poland
Thekla1
I found the name of a person who advertises himself as a Polish Genealogist.
Because I knew of no one else to ask, I requested that he research my last name. Several weeks later he e-mailed me that he had done the research, had spent over 20 hours, and had information which he would send to me after he received my check for $650.00. Although I thought it was a lot, the information was so valuable to us that I sent him the check. What I received in return was about what I could find on the Internet. I was very sad about this and felt that in my search to find family who had survived, we had been taken advantage of. Since then I have learned that others have had the same experience with this person -- Pawel B. Dorman.I hope that this message can protect someone else >from making the same expensive mistake. Sincerely, Thekla Stein Nordwind [moderator: In future please turn off MIME encoding when sending messages to JRI. Stuart]
