On a point of information: Two recent messages in the Digest
inadvertently gave the title of the Vilna GAON as GOAN -- a typographical error. I take the liberty of pointing this out now, lest the incorrect order of the vowels become imprinted on everybody's brain, thus perpetuating the typo to all eternity (-:). (In my lexicon, a Goan would be a native of Goa!) "Ga'on" is actually the Hebrew noun GA'ON, meaning in this context "Excellence." So the Title is roughly equivalent to "His Excellency" or "Your Excellency." Judith Romney Wegner

Herb Rikelman <hrikelman@...>
Saul Epstein, my grandfather, was one of 9
children born in Vitebsk Russia about 1880. We think he was raised in Vedosa Russia and came to the US in 1904. His father's name was Bernard & mother was Reva. His sister's names were: Sonya, Rachel & Rose & the brother's names: Shiya, Mandel, Hershel, Zolomon & Lebe (or Tebe). He also had a half brother named Hyman Neustead who lived in Connecticut. We never knew any of his siblings nor if any of them came to America. Is any of this is familiar? I would appreciate you letting me know . Thank you. Sheri Rikelman

A kind soul on JewishGen found my great-great-grandmother buried in the
"Russian Brotherhood Cemetery" in St. Paul, Minnesota. My question is whether the "Russian Brotherhood" was an organization all over the US or just in St. Paul. If it was national in scope, can someone point me to information on the organization. Sincerely, Carol Adler Zsolnay

The Sept. 10, 1998, issue of the "Washington Jewish Week" included an
article by Noma Faingold of the "Jewish Bulletin of Northern California" tiled Yizkor Books Illuminate Like in Prewar Shtetls. The article indicates that the San Francisco-based Holocaust Center of Northern California published an English translation of the 406-page Kobrin Yizkor book. "The book was orginally published in Tel Aviv in 1951 and it features vintage photgraphs and dozens of accounts covering daily life, history and notable local personalities. If anyone is researching Kobrin, they might want to contact the Holocaust Center of Northern California to see if copies of the book are still available for sale. If someone does, please share the reply with the rest of this discussion group. In addition, the article indicates that the Holocaust Center had received a parial grant to copy the 500 yizkor book collection into microform. David M. I was fascinated by all the responses to my inquiry about Ekaterinoslav. These new subscribers might well miss messages of relevance to them. Might I suggest that to facilitate the kinds of connection that Touger has discovered, there might be some kind of archive set up for the correspondence that appears here? In other words, for example, messages concerning specific family names might be grouped alphabetically for those names. There will inevitably be problems concerning required duplications, but here I am just suggesting the principle. Bryan Polikoff UK MODERATOR'S NOTE: All messages that have been posted to the Belarus SIG Discussion Group since day one have been archived. JewishGen is going to provide a search capability for this SIG's message archive, similar to the search capabilities of the JewishGen Discussion Group. Based on my discussions with Susan King today, it appears that it could still be awhile before we have the search capablity. The volunteer JewishGen technical guru who can make this happen is busy working on other JewishGen projects and can only do one thing at a time. There is also another way to implement the message search capability, but this requires more "bandwidth" on the Internet then JewishGen currently has. Bryan makes a very good point. There have already been a number of occassions when I have wanted to search the message archives to find something I knew had already been posted.

Hi David et al,
About a year ago I was able to borrow the English version of the Book of Kobrin through Interlibrary Loan >from the public library. Anne F. Lee <AnneLee1@...>
At the Jewish Genealogy Seminar in LA (July 1998) about 15 people who are
searching for family in Bohemia and Moravia got together to exchange information. I want to thank Susan Boyer for helping me set up the meeting in LA as well as all who came. At this time we are setting up an e-mail only address list of all who are searching in Bohemia/Moravia. This will not be a formal SIG or moderated discussion group. Rather, I will maintain a list of names and e-mail addresses which I will distribute to everyone on the list on a periodic basis. Each person on the list will then be responsbile for keeping the list so they themselves can send out whatever messages/requests (about searching in the Bohemia/Moravia area) they want to send to the others. We invite anyone who is interested in Bohemia/Moravia to join us. Please contact me. Anne Feder Lee
