JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Searching: SHEAR/SCHER #general

Rita Margolies <b4kids@...>

My pgf's name was Max SHEAR on my father's birth certificate in 1911.
(Later on the spelling changed to SCHER).I have his death certificate that
says he's >from Russia. It gives his father's name as William and mother's
name as Fannie GOLDSTEIN. I also know he was a patient in Central Islip for
20 years and that he died there. I know he was naturalized but I have no
idea when. That's my hard evidence.

There is no one alive now that knows anything about him. I have his death
certificate. I've written to Central Islip for information, but I have no
idea whether they'll be able to supply anything useful. I don't know if he
had brothers or sisters, or whether his parents emigrated with him. I've
written for my gp's marriage license info--guessing they were married about
a year before my father was born since there was little birth control in
those days.

Does anyone have any other suggestions since I would love to find other
relatives if they exist?

Rita

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Notice of TV Special on Holocaust Survivor Reunion #general

Gabor Zsolnay <gmz262@...>

In June I posted queries about a reunion of child survivors of the
Holocaust who were German and Austrian children in 1940 sent to a Brussel's
Children's Home and then fled to Southern France to escape the advancing
Nazi forces. They were called " The Children of La Hille." Some
JewGenners even helped locate some of the child survivors.

The very emotional reunion took place in July in Chicago, IL and was taped
by the Learning Channel for a series entitled "REUNIONS". In case anyone
is interested, the show about the reunion of the child survivors will air
next week in the US and Canada. Here is the information:

Reunion of the "Children of La Hille".
On the TV series "REUNIONS" on the Learning Channel on Cable.
1:30pm EST on Wednesday October 7th in the US and in Canada.
Repeated ~5 more times throughout the year.

If you watch the show and then think you know of someone else who was a
child survivor of La Hille, contact reunion organizer Walter REED/Werner
RINDSBERG in care of me: gmz262@...

Sincerely,

Carol Adler Zsolnay at gmz262@...

P.S. A poignant post script. One attendee to the reunion was the director
of the orphanage who ensured the safety of the children >from Belgium to
France. He was now a frail man in his late 80s who flew in >from Berlin for
4 days to see "his children", against doctor's orders. He made quite an
impact at the reunion as you will see if you watch the show. Sadly, on
Sept 11th he died in Berlin due to complications >from surgery for colon
cancer.

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen records of donations to Eretz Israel #general

A passage about my ancestral shtetl (Gudel, Lithuania) in Pinkas haKehillot
Lita mentions a significant numbers of Gudel donors by 1923 to early
settlements in Eretz Israel. Would records of this type of donation be kept,
in Israel or anywhere else? How would whoever compiled Pinkas haKehillot
Lita know this fact unless they had seen some records or other evidence and
how does one get hold of the information?

Stephen Mednick <cssaus@...>

Further to some recent postings about obtaining Birth/Death/Marriage
Certificated in the UK via email, I made some inquiries about this and yes,
it can be done. The Office of National Statistics did have a security
concern about sending credit details in an email message but that's up to
the requestor to be concerned about.

The ONS also sent me the application forms that can be used to request a
Birth, Death or Marriage Certificate and also a form listing all the fees.
These forms are Word documents and I'd be happy to forward them to someone
if they felt it warranted inclusion in the Jewishgen files.

To repeat, if you want to request certificates by email, use:

David Goldman <davic@...>

I thank everyone who has been providing input into my recent discoveries.
One interesting piece that has not yet been resolved is the fact that all
those ZISELMANs were living in Okolovo, which appears to be about 45 miles
due west of Stare-Borisov where great-grandpa Israel Hirsh ZISELMAN was
born according to his documents. Since I don't have documents showing a
move to Stare-Borisov, I can only assume that Yeruchem moved there when he
married his wife Leah JAFFE.

Also, do people agree with me that *absent* must often refer to being away
on business rather than dead, since death is often referred to explicitly?
Old Mordechai ZISELMAN was *absent* >from the census since 1824, and his son
Shmuel since 1854, even though his son Yeruchem and his wife Esther YUDOVA
were listed in 1858 without mention of Shmuel having died.

Finally, when did census or tax documents begin in the Russian empire? Did
they start only at the beginning of the 19th century?

May everyone have an easy Yom Kippur fast.

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Re: Inns in the late 1800's in Poland #general

David Fielker <david@...>

According to my great-aunt Pessel, my great-grandfather Nahum SCHNEEBAUM
ran an inn in Pelnatycze, near Jaroslaw. He used to drink with the local
priest once a week, but on Saturday nights she had to be kept >from the bar,
where fights would break out.

My STIEGLITZ family ran an inn in Filipkowce, near Mielnica.

According to Suzan Wynne's excellent book "Finding your roots in Galicia"
(publ. Avotaynu), some 85 per cent of rural Polish Jews were engaged in the
liquor trade, but in 1910 Jews were forbidden to sell alcoholic beverages,
so 15,000 suddenly lost their source of income. This presumably triggered
the subsequent emigrations to the UK and the US.

My father told me that my great-grandfather owned an inn in Sejny, Poland.
The name was Moshe Gibianski. Anyone know anything about Inns in the late
1800's? Barbara Gibian Heinrich
My TURETSKY great-grandparents owned/ran a tavern or inn in Pinsk, Poland,
in the late 1800s and early 1900s. I don't know much about the inns. I do
know a story about my great-grandfather throwing out an unruly Cossack from
his establishment, and then having to leave the country to escape
retribution. He came to the U.S. for some time but then returned to Poland,
saying that the U.S. is a "trefe land" -- an unkosher/unclean place. His
TURETSKY children, including my grandmother, came to the U.S. and to
Uruguay. He and my great-grandmother died in the influenza epidemic of 1918
or 1919.

Pinsk is now part of Belarus.
