Lois Sernoff (jewishgen digest: October 05, 1998) has asked, "Does
anyone know of any NY cemetery(s) with ground dedicated to members of a NY landsmanshaftn >from Gorodishche, Ukr. [49o 17'/31o27'] ?" I do not know of any such plot; however, a number of people from Gorodishche, Kiev Gubernia, Ukraine were buried in the plot of the First Kremenchug Associoation in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Maspeth, NY. My grandparents and others >from my mother's family who arrived here >from Gorodishche in the latter part of the 19th century are buried there. Apparently they did not belong to any Gorodishche _landsmanshaft_, but rather to the one from Kremenchug, a town not far >from Gorodishche. Arthur S. Has anyone had any luck finding birth certificates >from Utah in the 1880s?
To make things harder, I do not know the town where the births may have taken place. One would think that in the land of Mormons, there would be great birth records, but so far I have had no luck. Any suggestions? Sincerely, Carol Adler Zsolnay at gmz262@nwu.edu

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Report from Lodz

HOLORO@...
Yesterday I said a Mourner's Prayer at the graves of my great grandfather,
HERSZ MORDCHAJEWICZ vel AJNENBAUM (1820-1900), and my great grandmother YENTA (ZYCHLINSKA) MORDCHAJEWICZ (1841-1901). Lodz is the city that my Mom & Dad and all of my grandparents were born in and coming here for a visit was something I've wanted to do for many years. I had to do a lot of tramping through an overgrown cemetery but it was well worth it. I also visited Aleksandrow where another great grandmother, RUCHLA LEAH (GORZEWSKI) RUDEK (1828-1894) was born. Tuesday I celebrated Succoth at the Lodz Jewish Community Center. They had a Succah (sp?) but we ate inside because it was too cold for the old people outside. We had a meal exactly like my grandmother made and it was wonderful. In the next few days I'll be visiting Zdanska Wola, Brezin and Lask for more research and then off to Cracow and Auschwitz. I haven't sorted out all my emotions as yet, but there's a lot spinning around in my head and stomach. Howard L. Rosen holoro@aol.com Mountainside, NJ

For those who might be interested in passenger manifests stored at the
British Public Records Office in London: If you are planning to contact Debbie Beavis regardng a search, please, please only contact her if you know within a span of a very few weeks what date you are looking for. Because these records are unindexed, it just isn't possible to to conduct a search over a large time period. Debbie is a valuable contact, but let's not overwhelm her with requests she cannot honor. JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Reb is not Rav!
#general
Judith Romney Wegner
> This is my first posting and I have just started my geneology search. TheYour son-in-law is correct. "R" on a tombstone ( Resh apostrophe) or (if written in full) Resh Bet, would stand for Reb, a yiddishized pronunciation of the word "Rav." This pronunciation is used when the title is simply an honorific which means nothing more nor less than plain "Mr." Actually, it is sociologically interesting to note that "Mr." and "Reb" both originate in words meaning "master" or "teacher" Reb comes >from Rav and Mr. >from the Latin Magister, meaning Master in the sense of teacher. (In both cases the pronunciation changes when you DON"T mean that literally; Rav becomes Reb and Master becomes Mister. But what If the deceased had been a rabbi, it would have said H-R-V (HaRav, lit. "the Rabbi") followed by his name. Judith Romney Wegner
