Judith Koenig Fox asked :
Is there a Gomel Gerbania? Is the town of Bykhov actually in the Gomel Gerbania( I had always thought that it was in the MogilevskyThis is a rather short answer to your question. With the division of Poland (the Rzecz Pospolita) in 1772, the eastern portion of the Rechitsa District of the Minsk Voievodstvo (which included Rogachov, Chechersk and Gomel') became part of Russia. In 1793, the rest of the Gomel' region was brought into the Russian Empire. With subsequent territorial reorganizations (1850's), the Gomel' and Rogachov districts became part of Mogiliovskaia Guberniia, while the Mozyr' and Rechitsa districts were placed in Minskaia Guberniia. In 1919, most of the former Mogiliovskaia Guberniia was placed in the newly formed Gomel'skaia Guberniia (now termed Gomel'skaia Oblast'). A useful source for this is the volume (in Belorussian) Zbor pomnikaw historyii i kul'tury Belarusi. Homel'skaia voblasts' [Collection of monuments of history and culture of Belarus'. Gomel'skaia oblast'] (Minsk, 1985). It contains an excellent map. Bykhov, today, is not located in Gomel'skaia oblast', but in the region directly to its north. It is south of Mogiliov. You should search for it there in the other volumes of this series. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Peter B. Many of my relatives including my grandmother are buried in the OSHMANA
BROTHERS plot at Mt. Judah Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY. The plot is in terrible disrepair and when the cemetery was contacted, they gave me the name of a man who has the organization's records. When contacted, the elderly gentleman told me he no longer keeps the records and cannot remember who does. Is there anyone out there who can help? Sheldon I. Clare clare+@pitt.edu

Joe Ross asks for a private anwer, but I think the information may be of
interest for other people. Yes there is a jewish community in Montpellier. It is quite an old community. The first documents concerning Jews in the Archives Departementales are dated 1716, but according to Daniele Iancu and Mireille Lacave (Bulletin historique de la ville de Montpellier, n=B07 special), Jews were living in Montpellier during the Middle Ages. If you read french, there is a very interesting study about the Jews of Montpellier : Pierre Burlats-Brun, "Filiations juives a Montpellier de lafin du XVIIe siecle au Second Empire" in Annales de geneaalogie et d'heraldique, n=B03, juillet-septembre, p.5-15 (For Joe Ross : I send you privatly the adress of to-day community.) Maurine McLellan <trmclell@...>
This is a long shot, but I am running out of possibilities. I am
looking for the niece of Ann Bothman, wife of Louis Bothman. They had no children. Louis had done considerable research on the Bothman family. When Louis died, Ann was in possesion of the family info. When she died, everything was left to her niece. Ann lived in Menominee, Michigan at the time of her death. I am hoping to locate the niece (I do not even know her name) and see if what happened to the information. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Maurine Bothman McLellan trmclell@earthlink.net

The YIDDISH word for midwife is AKUSHERKE (>from French accoucher, to give
birth). The YIDDISH and HEBREW word for butcher, the slaughterer, is the same: SHOCHET. The HEBREW word for midwife is MEYALEDET. The guy who sells the meat is the KATSAV in Hebrew. Where does Avarteki, for midwife, come from? And Fleishhacker?! David Goldman davic@erols.com
