I don't have the Hebrew text in front of me, but YDYDYH looks a lot
like the Hebrew spelling of the biblical name Englished as
"Jedidiah".

It was a name given Solomon as a newborn; see II Samuel 12:25

Subject: Gravestone Name YDYDYH?
From: Stew Driller <>
Yesterday, I visited the grave of a relative and found the
name on the stone to be "Yakov ben YDYDYH
Yes, you have certainly transcribed it correctly. No problem here at al
-- this is the well-known name Yedidyah (another name for King Solomon, see
2 Samuel 12:25).

Yedidyah means "Beloved of the Lord." So in Yiddish translation it gets
shortened to just plain "beloved" which produces the Yiddish name Lieber
(meaning "beloved") which in turn is often "sound-aliked" to the name Louis.

Incidentally, the Hebrew name of the famous Jewish philosopher Philo was a
similar shortening of the name Theophilos (which is the full Greek
translation of Yedidyah). There was also in the first century C.E.
(contemporary with Philo) a high priest Theophilus whose Heb. name was
likewise Yedidyah.

MODERATOR NOTE: Harold Rabbie, Andrew Cassel, and Chaim Charutz also responded to this query. This subject has been discussed before, but not in detail.

Thanks to all who responded.

I'm aware of the English name Jedediah, but never thought of
it as a Jewish name, and certainly wouldn't have associated it
with what I'd found on the stone.

I don't know how long it would have taken me to see the
relationship between Yedidyah as Hebrew for "Friend (or
Beloved) of God" and the Yiddish Lieber, or Beloved without
your help. This finally identifies him as my
great-great-uncle and finds a firm spot for him on my family
tree.

Thanks again,

Perhaps other genealogists have faced this problem.
I type up family chronologies and relay them to the
family members and to others related to them. This
material includes birth dates, addresses, and tele-
phone numbers of living persons, as well as the so-
cial security numbers of the deceased. My material
in this case was all based on public sources, but a
recipient hit the roof anyway. I decided that this
fellow was just too rich for his own good, and only
removed him >from my e-mail list. But I've just re-
ceived a snail-mail letter >from him.

He sent the following: "I want your assurance that
our birth dates, telephone numbers and social secu-
rity numbers will be removed." He then added: "If
I don't receive it, I will be forced to take action
and you will not like it if I do."

The tone of this letter confirms my judgment that a
person can be so rich that he improperly expects to
get his way in all matters. My first thought is to
continue ignoring him. Any suggestions? I perhaps
should add that my assessment of his wealth derives
from the town he lives in. Also, in all my experi-
ence as a genealogist, previous problems were found
only with mentally disturbed or senile people. The
current subject clearly is neither, and had related
useful information about the earlier generations of
his branch of the family. I would conjecture that,
among items he wants removed, there's one that will
embarrass him. But the information is available to
anybody who knows the sources, so perhaps he told a
lie to somebody who doesn't know these sources. He
may have simply lied about his age to his wife...

Danny Kaye did not write an autobiography. A biography NOBODY'S FOOL
was published a few years ago. The author is Martin Gottfried, and he had
the cooperation of Dena Kaye (Sylvia Fine is deceased). Gottfried is a
well-known journalist and critic, associated for many years with WOMEN'S
