Ok, I can see it's an unusual name.

If you are a member of Jewishgen.org, they have a town finder. I know that Nowe Miasto is in their system.  Don't know about Ulanow.
I think you might be able to search if you're not a member also.  Either way they're a great resource.

I have Hankin/Ghenkin/Chaikin etc. from the Mogilev area. there was a connection to the Czar's family. I have the same names used in the family but they would not be the same people as they went directly to the USA and not to Missouri nor London.  Sounds like there could be a connection.  But how?

Thanks Michael

We know about this collection - someone from WJR gave a talk about it in Glasgow a while back.  Didn't know whether they only search for family members/descendants.

best wishes

My earliest Chaikin family member, who actually married into my family, was Tevie Shmuel and he was born about 1831 in Dvinsk, Daugavpils, Latvia.  He raised his family in the Chernigov region of Ukraine.  Tevie died in NYC in 1904; most of his children followed him to the United States.

I cannot answer your question directly but this may narrow your search.  If Morris is part of the family also known as Charkin, there are many indications on Ancestry UK that they came from Yampol/Yampil which is on the current western border of Ukraine.  The river in question is the Dniester.  Coincidentally, I once overheard a conversation in which a member of what I presume is part of your extended family, said that they came from somewhere near the Dneiper river but I think Dniester is more likely.

Hello All,
I wander if any one can help with this query - Is the Weil family from Vac Hungary related to the Rabbinical family of Yehuda Weil and Yona Weil, as family lore states. I have searched almost all Weils family trees and found no connection.  Furthermore I know The famous Weil family did not have the given name Avigdor as this family have. Avigdor born in Vac circa 1830.

Jack Shiffman and many others in the International Brigade are listed and discussed in a number of reports of the Congressional Hearings of Un-American Activities (1938), Investigation of un-American Propaganda Activities (1944), and Scope of Soviet Activity in the U.S. : Hearings before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary, Subcommittee To Investigate the Administration of the Internal Security Act and Other Internal Security Laws (1956-1959). These are long reports, but if anyone is interested I'll be happy to make the full pdf documents available online through my GoogleDrive for a few months. Contact me directly by e-mail.

Lots of excellent resources on the International Brigades have already been provided by other respondents above--thanks! A few others include the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam https://search.iisg.amsterdam/  which holds a lot of photographs of the Int'l Brigades and related material; Polish, Austrian, and Hungarian participants in the International Brigades can be found in the Vera and Donald Blinken Open Society Archives at Central European University in Budapest https://catalog.osaarchivum.org/ , and Martin Sugarman's "Against Fascism – Jews who served in The International Brigade in The Spanish Civil War" https://www.marxists.org/subject/jewish/spanjews.pdf (Sugarman is Archivist of the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women, Jewish Military Museum).

This is just a guess from someone who's been looking into his own Romanian ancestry, but it sounds as if it could be Filiasi in the southeastern part of the modern country. Does that general geography square with what else you know?

Re: Translation please from Dutch #germany #translation

Hello Reuven and Ed
I found in the document the father of Rika OS, [who was born on 18 Nov 1827], as Levi Simon OS who was married to Rachel Luppeman. Rika was born in Wonsdorf [now Wunsdorf, Hanover region].
Levi Simon OS is recorded as a rogue or scoundrel from Winschoten, province of Groningen, Netherlands, in the Allgemeiner Polizei-Anzeiger, Vol 29, No 42, pages 221-2, [Coburg 24 Nov 1849] as case # 10445, with a very detailed description of his features, and his misdeeds. His wife Rachel Luppeman and a number of their children are mentioned in old German lettertype. He is described as being 50 years old, which fits in with the record  http://5.2.76.95/details/ps56/ps56_458.html of Juan Goudsmit, where Rachel Luppeman is shown as Rachel Lappeman.
The document lists  4 witnesses who confirm the birth date of Rika OS. The declaration was issued by the burgomaster of Winschoten on 3 Feb 1853.
I know this is not the desired translation, but it may help.

Good Day,
My wife's grandmother could be related to your family.  Her name was Lena Chaikin, her father was Morris and mother was Fayga.  This family lived in Gomel about 179 km from Mogilev.  Lena was born in 1893 and married Mendl "Max:Gitlin.  The immigrated to the US and lived in St. Louis, Missouri.

Best,

Hello Ed
Perhaps we can work together on this for Reuven, because the handwriting is not very easy to read. Once we have done that, we have to translate it. Will you start transcribing the text into Dutch as a first step?
