I have been looking for information on the Eisenstadt family >from the
Schedrin area of Belarus for some time . There was one child who was left behind
with a Zelman family that emigrated to Palestine either before or after WW I.
He visited the US (New York) once after Israel was established. He was known
as Yodel He did have family in Israel but I do not know any of the names. Is
there anyone in Israel or elsewhere that might have any information on this
family?

Belarus SIG #Belarus Names of people killed in Starobin, Minsk in 1941 #Belarus

Shoshana L. Boublil

Yad Vashem has just published many documents on their website, =
pertaining to what happened to jews during the years of the Holocaust. =
The documents cannot be searched by name, but there are other options.

I entered Starobin, and obtained a 14 page document of Jews killed in =
Starobin in 1941. Only one problem - it's in Russian and I don't read =
Russian. I know some of the alphabet, but not enough.

I was hoping someone could assist me: I am looking for relatives name =
RUBNICZ (or RUBNITZ or RUBNITS) on the list. Also, what are the titles =
of the various columns.

There was a previous post with the same subject about this family, i.e.,
“There have been some Bar Mitzvah documents, including pictures, found that
include a Bar Mitzvah certificate for Henry Martin GINSBURG, the son of
Ellis or Elias GINSBURG.”
We now know, after receiving the pictures that this was a Confirmation
Certificate and not a Bar Mitzvah.
Included in the posted message was, “the pictures will be posted on Viewmate
at a later date, using the same subject. ” . . .
The pictures have been received and some are now on Viewmate. Please view
those posted at http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/index.asp Files Nos.

If you know how to contact the descendants or friends of these families,

Belarus SIG #Belarus Volkolata names #Belarus

Rhea Starr <rheafstarr@...>

We recently visited Volkolata, Belarus where my
father was born and where his brother, Zalman AXELROD,
and his wife and son were among the Jews murdered by
the Nazis in Nov, 1941. We spoke to an 83 year old
woman who mentioned several other names of Jews from
Volkolata. Among them was Chaim LEVIN who had a
daughter who escaped. If anyone knows about this
daughter and if I can contact her or a descendant, I
would appreciate learning about it.
Other names this woman mentioned was
LAWSONOVK, GOTRIDGE, and Getlitz BENSER who had a
leather and metal shop. I probably don't have the
names spelled correctly but it was as good as I could
make out.

Belarus SIG #Belarus Visit in Slobodka Belarus #Belarus

Guy Elizur - Israel <GuyE@...>

Dear colleagues
Few weeks ago I returned >from a route journey in east Europe. One of the
places I visited was the village where my grandmother was born named:
Slobodka.
Slobodka is located near Braslev in the west-north of Belarus near the
border with Lithuania (Latitude: 55.6833 ; Longitude: 27.1833)
There were about 40 Jewish families in this shtetl before the war and
also there was Jewish cemetery. The cemetery was destroyed in 1960s by
the communists. Center of culture was built on this place. Jewish
monuments were used as a foundation for this building.

Anyone having interest in the Slobodka shtetl, please contact me through
by private email.

Dear All,
Last decade the Database of JewishGen was enriched a number of lists of Duma Voters.
Sometimes even the statistics on the Jewish voters is done there. But it is very
important, that researchers knew, that the matter concerns only about lists on
city house (curia), and were as well as houses of landowners, peasants and workers.

Belarus SIG #Belarus Re: Yiddish/Hebrew Name for Alice #Belarus

Prof. G. L. Esterson <jerry@...>

Lori Swartz wrote as follows:

Does anyone have any idea what the Yiddish and/or Hebrew name(s) would have
been for someone who was called Alice when they immigrated to America?
It is wise to keep in mind that our European ancestors during the 19th and
early 20th centuries used all kinds of names, in various venues -- Hebrew,
Yiddish, local secular, German secular, secular names >from countries other
than the one in which they lived, and others.

I have not found any data for Jewish *Belarus* emigrants related to the
English name Alice adopted by them in non-European countries of
immigration, based on a statistical linkage to the names they had in
Europe. The name Alice was adopted in England, in the US, and in Palestine
by immigrants to those countries, that is, Jews who had emigrated >from
various countries in Europe. The Hebrew name which was the common
denominator to this name was "Aliza", meaning "joy", or the similar name
"Alisa".

For example, the versions of the name Alice which were adopted by Jews
escaping >from Europe to Palestine were Alice, Alisa, and Aliza (written in
Hebrew, of course) -- and these names were statistically linked to their
European Jewish and non-Jewish names such as the ones suggested below.

Thus, if the name linkages which applied to other European countries during
the period extending up to about 1925, also applied to Belarus, then here
are some possibilities of European secular names for Lori to keep in mind
for a relative migrating to the US, leading to the name Alice in that country:

Alice/Alicia/Alissa/Alissia (English), Alies/Alisa/Alise/Alisia (Germany),
Aliza, Alicia/Alicja/Alicya/Alitsia (Polish), Adelcia (German)

Such names can be found by visiting the JewishGen web site for Given Names
Data Bases, and searching its various data bases for the English name
"Alice", the Hebrew name "Aliza", or one of the above secular names:

Belarus SIG #Belarus Sam, Fannie & Florence KAPLAN family, MS & Michigan, Plus More Pictures relating to GINSBURG Family, Laurel,MS #Belarus

Please view these additional pictures to see if you know anyone in the
Confirmation Class of 1939 in MS, or one of the 3 people in the group of
pix, the Grandfather or Uncle of Henry GINSBURG.
We hope these additional pictures will open a connection for the family and
the memorabilia will be returned to descendants of Ellis, Bessie and Henry
Martin GINSBURG.
Information: Ellis GINSBURG and Sam KAPLAN (wife, Fanny) were co-owners of a
dress shop in Laurel, MS. Both Bessie GINSBURG and Fanny KAPLAN were born in
Michigan according to the 1930 Census. The two gentlemen were born in
Russia. The 1920 census shows Sam Caplin (different spelling but obviously
the same person) as a brother-in-law (BorI) and Florence as a niece. The
1920 Census shows Bessie born in Russia. Comparing the Census, there is not
a full 10 years difference in ages between 1920 and 1930 except for Florence
Kaplan/Caplin. Usually, the 1920 census is most accurate.
During the 1939 Confirmation, Henry Martin GINSBURG would have been 14 or 15
years old.

Belarus SIG #Belarus burial by small town Smolyarka has been "recently" discovered #Belarus

Franklin J. Swartz <fjs@...>

Dear All,

Actually this site has been known for some time. It was discovered and
thoroughly documented by Ms Elizaveta Mshar, a history teacher at the
Boronnagorskaya Seconday School over a year ago. Ms Mshar, like so
many people who have preserved Jewish heritage in Belarus is not
Jewish. Representatives of the U.S. and other embassies visited the
site about three months ago. The local authority has already pledged
approximately $12,000 to build a memorial on the site. Unfortunately
there are already indications that some organisations are attempting
to exploit this tragic site and, while this is indeed a worthwhile
project, everyone should be cautious about appeals by third parties
for funds to build a memorial. If anyone is interested about the
background to this site I will send Ms Mshar's contact details.

The East European Jewish Heritage Project is not, at present, involved
in this restoration and this message should not be construed as a
request for funding.
Best regards,
