More accurately the NY Worlds Fair of 1939 was also 1940.
There was also one in the early 1960's maybe 1964.

My husband came across a wonderful book while doing some history
reading. It lists the names of all Jewish soldiers who fought in the
Civil War, North and South, and where they are buried. The book is Mel
Young's WHERE THEY LIE: SOMEONE SHOULD SAY KADDISH, published 1991 by
University Press of America inc., 4720 Boston Way, Lanham, MD 20706. It
was still in print last year when he was able to buy it through one of
the major book store chains.

A few weeks ago I contacted one of the present officers of the Chevra - who

JewishGeners,

Will someone in Cape Town South Africa look in the telephone directory and
let me know if there is a listing for Ray Fox. She was at 2 Paradise
Mansions, Bowwood Road, Claremont, but that was more than 30 years ago.

Please respond to me privately.

Thanks,

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Crimean Jewish genealogy #general

Correct me if I'm wrong, but outside of Poland it appears that the
Crimea has the most Jewish records available on LDS microfilm. There
appears to be a discrepancy between what is available for the Jewish
genealogist interested in the Crimea (Simferopol, Kerch), and the lack
of information (books, SIG) for this area.

I have looked at the films for Simferopol for 1890-1900 (1854-1917 are
available). For anyone that can read Hebrew and/or Russian, these
records offer more information than what I have seen recorded for
Poland.

Please respond directly to me if there is a group devoted to studying
the very rich and old history of Crimea with a specific interested in
genealogy.

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Records of New Orleans Jews #general

Steven N. Lewis <lewissn@...>

After 15 years of looking I'm still stymied in my search for info on my
gggrandfather's early years as an immigrant in New Orleans, LA. From
ships records, I have learned that BENJAMIN GROSS (b. 1815) emigrated
from Bavaria on the ship Viola >from the port of Le Havre, arrived in
Oct. of 1845 in New Orleans. Ships records list him as a "farmer"
although later he was employed as a dry goods or produce merchant. He
either was married in Germany or in New Orleans to CAROLINA GROSS, and
his eldest child THEODORE GROSS was born in New Orleans in 1845 acc'ding
to census records. Louisiana State Archives has no record of Theodore's
birth, no Benjamin Grosses are listed in the city directory from
1846-1858, and queries to Gate of Heaven (Jewish) cemetary in New
Orleans yielded no family members. The family moved to New York by 1860
and to Washington, DC a few years later. Death certificates have yielded
no further clues; in fact, Benjamin isn't buried next to his wife and
there is no record of his death in DC. Information on the Gross family's
first 15 years in the USA is critical because I'm looking for clues to
my gggrandmother's maiden name, since GROSS is so common a name that
it's tantamount to looking for John or Jane Doe. Do any fellow
Jewishgenners have leads regarding Bavarian Jews in New Orleans in the
years before the Civil War? Since civil records haven't been useful, I'm
praying that perhaps synagogue registers or mohel books may exist.
Thanks for any help you can send my way! Nancy Breslau Lewis
