1890 IMMIGRATION SHIPS: EMPRESS VS WYOMING #usa
I found two 1890 ship sailings for Adolf & Emilie TAFLOWITSCH:
**Hamburg Passenger Lists, 1850-1934", the Empress. [on Ancestry]--
Sailing from Hamburg to NY ( Departure--8 July 1890).
The original manifest, at the top, says Indirekt Band 084 (23 Jun 1890-9 Aug 1890)
The Record Index says Arrival Place was Liverpool/West Hartlepool
If this voyage originated in Hamburg on 8 July 1890, what does the 23 Jun 1890 date (listed at top of manifest page) mean??
**"New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1891" the Wyoming. [onFamilySearch], https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939V-RMS2-Z?i=86&cc=1849782&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AQVSV-T2PM.
[Adolf is #9 & Emilie is #120 on the list]
Travel dates were 21 July-11 Aug 1890.
The information available does not include port of departure.
Where did the voyage originate?
The travel information was identical for both Emilie & Adolf on each ship (exception: they used Warsaw on Empress & Russia on Wyoming as place of birth)
Their names were not crossed off the Empress manifest.
Why would immigrants typically change travel arrangements to substantially later travel dates? [ there's about 2 weeks between the departure dates of these two trips].
Note: Adolf, in his naturalization papers said that he arrived in NY on 26 June 1890--no ship information.
On the Wyoming vessel manifest, there is a number written next to Emilie Taflowitsch''s name, vh (or oh)387/899. What does this number mean??
TAFLOWICZ, TAUFIELD, RAJCHMAN/REICHMAN--Lodz, Warsaw, Poland

I just took a quick look at the documents:
The Ancestry documents are from the 'Hamburg passenger list' files and prove the departure from Hamburg to America via Liverpool (emigration, departure date July 8th in Hamburg). The time range mentioned 'indirekt Band...' refers to a group of documents filmed on one film roll.
The list you found on FamilySearch is the immigration/incoming list in New York. The different dates refer to the time crossing the pond (arrival in NY on July 23rd) and it includes the place of embarkment L'pool = Liverpool and Q'town=Quenstown=Cobh, Irland).
Kind regards from Germany

Adding to this thread: The Empress arrived at West Hartlepool on the East coast of England with passengers from Hamburg who were destined for New York. https://www.theshipslist.com/ships/lines/hartlepool.shtml Shows the West Hartlepool Co. as having regular service to/from Hamburg at that time, but having no service to N.Y.toggle quoted message Show quoted text
The immigrants went by rail to Liverpool where they had to wait for their next ship, the Wyoming, stopping first at Queenstown to take on additional passengers.
The notation VL is for Verification of Landing. To become a naturalized citizen of the U.S. one had to have been a resident for at least five years. The ship manifest was checked to confirm this was true for Emilie.
