Great excitement! The 1921 Scottish census is up on https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

I  looked for my husband's family and found them in two different places - the head of the house and one son in one place and his wife and the rest of the children in another.
Please could someone tell me what the name of the town where Abraham Glickman was born is. Looks like the enumerator's pen had problems in the middle of writing it!

In my opinion...

It looks like "Caurland" that's in Latvia and was once under Russian Rule.

Thank you to all who replied. Looks like it is Courland - the area and not a specific town. Which is why the community database doesn't show it.
More research necessary I think!

I have been sent the definitions sought by enumerators in the 1921 Census by Old Scottish Genealogy group. For those born outside Scotland/the UK,  enumerators were required to seek the name of the province rather than the town, though this was not always what was given and in some cases the town could have the same name as the province.

My great grandfather Benjamin Brown (1855-1945) who arrived in Edinburgh in 1870 aged 15 years put down both the town and the province viz Vishtinetz (using the Yiddish version of the town name) and Suwalki (Gubernia) in the 1921 Scots Census.

His wife and first cousin Janet (Shaina) Brown (1859-1937) who arrived in Edinburgh with her husband in 1870, aged 11 years, put down the Polish version of the next door town where she was born, Novgorod, which is now Kirdikos Naumeistis (Lithuanian). Both places were in Suwalki Gubernia, Poland when they left but have been in Lithuania since 1919. 

In contrast Benjamin's brother Lewis (Yehudah Leib) was born slightly later in 1862, and he was born in Kovno gubernia, in Lithuania, next door to Suwalki gubernia. He also arrived in Edinburgh in 1870 aged 8 years. 

But basically they were all born in the same general area, but each place had different names and different languages were used to describe them.

I was wondering what was going on after finding today that another family also put down an area and not a town - in fact I wasn't sure I had the right people until I checked which gubernia the town I knew they came from was in :)
