JewishGen.org Discussion Group - Digest #1 #Help
David Lewin
I am sorry - I am utterly bewildered. Probably too old to
understand the computing jargon of what is actually the most welcome new platform. I hated not being able to send an attachment and I always had trouble with "text only". I am automatically subscribed to the general list. OK, I had to change to "digest" to "individual" and eventually found that. Do the other SIGs continue as before? What are "#Hash" ? I a, incapable of reading volumes of Guide lines in the hope of finding this explained in words which I can follow David Lewin London

David,
Thank you for your message. A hashtag is represented by the following symbol: #. By adding a hashtag in the subject line, you can categorize your message. For example, for this message, we assigned the category of “#Help.” If your message was related to Polish research, you could add the hashtag of #Poland in the subject line. In this way, other researchers would know what category your post was related to. I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if I can ever be of help. Thanks for being part of the JewishGen family! With regard to other discussion lists, we have only upgraded the main JewishGen Discussion List currently, and will be focusing on the other lists in the near future.

Abraham,
The hashtag has the potential to be useful but needs to be visually presented better. The white in small letters on a light green background (#Sephardic #Galicia) makes it almost invisible to the eye. Larger letters and a black background would work (#Sephardic #Galicia).
חג שמח )it was always outrageous that the JewishGen forum would not accept Hebrew characters – so תודה רבה)

It would be nice to have a "Translate" button like on Facebook .... - Deb Scheimer Pittsburgh, PA

It would also be helpful if responses included the original email.
I find that reading what are clearly responses very confusing since the email being responded to is not included. Barbara Mannlein Tucson, AZ

I would amend that to suggest that if the writer is replying to a
digest post, they change the subject of the email appropriately to
reference the specific post, not the digest in general.

I would amend all of the above to say: “What have you done? You have changed something that was really good and informative to something that is totally a mess. I subscribed to this for years and found it very helpful; it is totally useless now. Go back to the original format. Change is not always good.”

I agree with Barbara Mannlein. It is very difficult to read the digests without knowing what any given post in answering.

Thank you, Jon. We will review how to do this better, per your suggestions.

With regards to Hebrew characters - this new platform can now accept accented characters, along with multiple languages, etc. It was never a policy to NOT accept this in the past. We were simply limited by the technology. Thank you very much for your feedback, suggestions and continued support of JewishGen's important work. Avraham

Thank you for your feedback. There are a few ways to include a reply in messages: Replying via your email to an individual message (i.e. not a digest): It depends on the setting within your email client. When clicking "reply" if your email client automatically includes the previous message, it will do so within this Discussion Group as well. If it does not, you can adjust your settings, or copy+paste the message manually. If you need help, please email support@..., include which email client you use, and we will do our best to help. Replying via your email to a message within a digest: Beneath the message you are interested in replying to, there are the following options:

Dear Vicki,
Thank you for your message. I appreciate your honesty and being willing to share your opinions. Our previous system was preventing us from creating/maintaining a platform that would unite as many people around the world as possible. (See my earlier messages that outlined some of the causes, such as the requirement for Plain-Text, the inability to display images, accented characters, other languages, etc). We felt this new platform would be a major upgrade, but I do recognize that it's not perfect, and I am sorry for any incovneience this might be causing you. We will continue to try and improve this platform to the greatest extent possible and will appreciate your feedback and suggestions. In the meantime, if we can be of any help to you in terms of more specific training, etc., please email support@... and we will do our best to assist. Thank you again. Avraham

Really really dislike this new format. Impossible to sort out the messages, everything is on top of everything else. I have no clue what belongs with what. Why in the world would you do this? I agree with all those who have complained. Please revert back to something intelligible.

Abraham,
I think the issue Barbara was referencing is that the original post is not appearing in the digest. Although it appears if someone wants to comment on a reply, it is totally impractical to open a reply window just to see the original message. Maurine McLellan

I have to agree. Updating and improving outdated systems is a good thing, but you've instead ended up with a non-user friendly platform. If one needs "guidance" in navigating the site, the program is too complicated. My suggestion is to return to the well-functioning, easy to navigate system, then consult with a team of users as each "improvement" is considered, constructed, tested and (only then) implemented. As it stands, I'm inclined to unsubscribe because it's now a bother instead of a pleasure to read the postings. Leslie Gut Zurich Sent from my Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

I am happy with the new format. I don't know why people are having so many problems. I read my mail in Yahoo Mail, and the digest appears just like the old JewishGen digest. Hebrew is Hebrew, and Russian is Russian. I can't read either, but Google Translate can. It would be nice to have automatic translation, but I don't think it exists in the platform. If you use Google Chrome, it will translate. I don't get everything on top of everything else. The various messages appear in order, just like they used to. Think about where you read the digest, as perhaps your mail app is the problem. The digest isn't. Sally Bruckheimer Princeton, NJ

Anyone having trouble
with the new format may prefer to receive individual emails vs
the digest. For me, it's easier to hit the delete button a few
more times than to deal with a digest that contains unrelated
emails.

This new set up is not user friendly.
Please return to the old format. Thx.
