Comments about format change

A few comments and a suggestion

suggestion: Shorten the [Jewishgen.org] title to 2 or 3 characters
so the subject can be seen.

Comment: People do not like change

Comment: The new format may be intuitive for a software or computer literate
person, but most members of JG are interested in genealogy not
computers. e don't mind turning thousands of pages in a state archive,
but do mind following various  links to find how to ask or respond to posts.

Comment: Change is disruptive and many messages will be missed until
people are comfortable with a new format.

I tried to login to Jgen and it says I don't have a password. Do we all  have to change our password?

I found I had to come up with a new password to access my mailing list subscriptions but your old password should still work on the main website. Mine still does. It’s a shame we now have to have two.

If by Jgen you mean this page <https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main>, that is only for the JewishGen.org Discussion Group.

(The green title "JewishGen.org: The Global Home for Jewish Genealogy" is misleading -- the "regular" JewishGen.org site remains where it has always been and can be accessed as usual.)

So, you don't have to change your password for the regular site but you do have to create a new password if you want to log on to the discussion group online.

To do that, click the green "Log in if you are already a member" button near the bottom of the page, then on the resulting page click "Forgot your password, or don't have one yet?".

Enter your email address and click "Email me a link to log in," and when you get the link, click it to log in and create a password for the discussion group site.

Note that your regular JewishGen.org account will remain unchanged.

I am not an active member of this site, but I do read through my emails looking for topics of interest (surnames and locations). I find the new format easy to use on my computer while online. I have not tried using while offline, so I cannot address any of the issues I've heard others mention. I like being able to quickly jump to a topic and then get back to the table of contents.

I hope it all settles out soon.

It is possible that sometime in the future the two logins could be combined and we might use the e-mail and one password.  Maybe the researcher number can then be retired as a login ID and used as it probably was intended.

Hang in there.  I know it sounds frustrating to many "old-timers" (I am 64, but I have adjusted to the need for the computer), but hopefully things will be less painful to those users who have had so much trouble with the new format of JewishGen.  I understand the problems of a new look--we will all eventually get used to it.
