Irish Lord Mayor #Lithuania #Help #ISO

My family is from Lithuania (Kovno Guburnia - Gudel/Godeliai) KAGAN/COHEN
Family lore has it that a cousin was Lord High Mayor of Dublin.  This was before 1970.  Perhaps not even Dublin.   Any ideas of how to solve this mystery.   I would say it was fantasy except that the same story was repeated by a family member who I did not grow up knowing.

We are NOT related to Briscoe but could there be another one?

The only Jews elected to that position were: Lewis Wormser (1876) who died before taking office,   Robert Briscoe 1956, 1961, and his Ben Beiscoe in 1988.

Jews elected in other parts of the country were:
1555,                   William Annyas             Mayor of Youghal (County Cork),
1569, 1576, 1581, Francis Annyas (Ãnes)   Mayor of Youghal,
1899, 1904,          Otto Yaffe,                    Lord Mayor of Belfast,
1977,                   Gerald Goldberg,           Lord Mayor of Cork.
The Annyas were Sephardic.

Perhaps a relative worked for one of them….. and the family embroidered the story.

Perhaps you meant the Lord Mayor of London, Sir Bernard Waley-Cohen, elected in 1960?  See  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_Waley-Cohen

The 2 Lord Mayors of Dublin were the father and son by the name "Briscoe"

Barbara,
Correct on Robert Briscoe.  But I thought that there was a David O'Cohen who was Lord Mayor?

Susan,

Could your relative have been Gerald (Yoel) Goldberg, Lord Mayor of Cork in 1977? He was the son of immigrants from the village of Akmian, Kovno, Lithuania. He was born in Cork in 1912. His father, Louis Goldberg, arrived in Cork alone at age 14 in 1882. His mother, Rachel Sandler, also from Akmian, had immigrated to Cork earlier with her family. Louis lived with the Sandlers in Cork from the time he arrived, and Louis and Rachel eventually married in 1891. They moved to Limerick where they lived and had a store until the Limerick pogrom in 1904. They moved back to Cork with their family soon after. I've heard many wonderful stories about Goldberg on my visits to Cork.

I am interested in the name Sandler (reference their marriage into the Goldbergs of Cork), as there were two Sandlers who married into my Serwianski family from Sejny in Suwalki (just over the border from Kovno), One Hannah Sandler married my great grand uncle Barnett (Baruch) Servian in Liverpool in 1878.  She died in 1895 and Barnett moved to Chicago in 1905 with the four grown up children he had by Hannah Sandler in Liverpool. Barnett changed his name to Silverman in 1879 when his first son was born, and then to Maxwell in the USA (after his father Mordecai).  Their cousins, who were known as Server, came from Vishtinetz to Middlesbrough in NE England in the early 20th century, and one of them also married a Sandler.  Several of this family also went onto Chicago.
